hen you put Hong Kong's top male hotties in a fantasy of sorcery, portentiously mythic atmospherics and loopy fight sequences you have a movie that inspires both outright derision and a cult following that has endured a decade's wait for Storm Riders 2.
Like the first, the second installment features Ekin Cheng as Wind and Aaron Kwok as Cloud. Nicholas Tse and Charlene Choi are thrown in to keep the franchise young. Unlike the first, the new installment will be directed by the Pang Brothers, known for their stunningly imaginative special effects. When one brother is named Oxide, you can expect exotic cinematic chemistry. They have promised to outdo themselves this time by throwing the law of physics out the window. (Actually a film called Storm Riders 2 was released in 2004, but it was so awful that it seems to have been officially consigned to oblivion.)

Storm Riders was based on a classic comic book series in which Wind and Cloud, two gifted kids, are molded into fighting machines by an evil warlord. Throw in a beautiful girl named Destiny and a wild assortment of action figures and you end up with magical mayhem. Storm Riders 2 begins production in April. Due to 18 months of planned digital postproduction, the film won't be released until October 2009 — if everything goes smoothly.
