ten-year-old design for a prototype thermoelectric generator will be tested in a Chevy Suburban in 2009. GM estimates that such a device, based on a 10-year-old technology, could boost gas mileage 5% by converting exhaust heat into electricity.
Electric power consumption for on-board applications like air conditioning and sound systems cut into gas mileage by as much as 25% because the electricity must be generated using an alternator that adds to an engine's load. Satisfying some of that demand with a thermoelectric generator would reduce engine load and improve mileage.
