WHAT YOU SAY
(Updated 2/26/01)

I agree with the Brit-basher-- somewhat. The cities ARE full of people who know nothing about personal hygiene, think nothing of belching and farting in public, and can't match their clothes: you'd think you were in a white Chinatown as I jokingly tell my Asian friends! Finally, oh yes, there's scarcely a sidewalk without a few pools of vomit--especially if there's a pub nearby.
Yet, having said that, I've come to like the Brits. In some ways, they're a lot like 'stereotyped' Asians: somewhat quiet, modest and reserved. (I think it's got to do with the fact that even tho' it's fairly democratic, it's still nowhere near the U.S. in that respect.) You don't have people in your face asking you 'where are you REALLY from?' There's none of that fake friendliness and political correctness that we see all too often in the States.
Yes, it can be very racist--but in very different ways. For instance, there are even fewer minorities in executive positions, but there are far, far more interracial and gay marriages. No one thinks anything of featuring ads with a white woman and black or Asian man kissing and giving each other engagement rings. Also, where in the Western world would you find local card shops selling Chinese New Year Cards??
And not least, even though universities like Oxbridge are elitist, they still give more chances to minorities than those would-be liberal Ivies and mock-Ivies. For instance, quite a few Oxford University colleges were willing to give me a chance to teach English Literature, while the pretentious American ones like Williams and Stanford (their satellites in Oxford at least) only wanted to give their teaching to white students.
In the end, I'm proud to be American, but I sometimes I think the Brit [CUT OFF due to your network's packet-size limits]

I'm kind of disappointed to hear that British cities are so racist. Anyone else have any opinions about cities in Britain?
would-be traveller

Bronx Babe: Couldn't have said it better. Also, you are so funny.

Worst cities for Asians anywhere on the planet and the solar system : Any British city with a high percentage of caucasians. They are the most racist, obnoxious, ignorant hooligans you will ever have the misfortune of meeting.Every negative stereotype you can imagine about ghetto blacks applies to them. There is rampant unemployment, crime, alcoholism and social disintegration in these cities but they're too lazy to get off their arse and welfare to do anything about it and would rather blame it on the hardworking immigrant Asians for their problems. They drink like fishes(the pubs are always choke full) from their dole money and piss their money up the wall having a good time for the moment and look for a good fight or brawl when they're drunk and high, preferably looking for university students who they will attack on sight cause they're jealous they themselves are too thick and lazy to get into uni.For anyone who thinks I'm biased,I'm not.I studied there for many years and know it for a fact. This white trash population is the main reason the Brits are in decline and if it weren't for the immigrants revitalising the inner cities, they'd go down the tubes even faster.

Best city for Asian Americans is surprise,surprise...Singapore.This is a vibrant multucultural ultra-modern mega citystate. Many Asians from the West have come here to work and have rediscovered their Oriental roots in the process.Superb schools(ranked No.1 globally by TIME mag) and hardly any crime.I'm Singaporean and think my city is an excellent blend of the best of East and West.In fact, many whites now live and work here because of the excellent opportunities.Talk about reverse immigration,eh.heh heh heh

There's a reason why Boston is called Bean Town: it's cos' it's full of flatulent farts called 'white liberals.' But before you other (white) East Coasters smile condecsendingly on Boston, I should add that my remarks here apply to YOU as well.
Now, it's not that these so-called white liberals chase after Asians and other minorities with brick bats or burn crosses. They're too cowardly and class-conscious to do it. I've heard many stories--from both whites and Asians--about Ivy League universities who will hire a white person with fewer qualifications than a good Asian candidate. They particularly resent Asians in the humanities (unless it's Asian studies) because God forbid if Asians were to catch up with them in economics, history, or French!
My white friend and I have both witnessed sales assistants at quality department stores (Neiman's, Saks, etc.) ignore minority customers, even tho' these customers were AT LEAST AS WELL DRESSED AND PRESENTED AS WHITE CUSTOMERS.
It's not like these East Coasters are particularly intelligent or attractive themselves. Most can't write or think particularly well: look at those pretentious magazines like the 'Atlantic' , 'New Yorker ' especially 'The New Republic' with all of their half-assed pissy-wit articles on Asians taking over the world. And most of these tweedy men and women are predominantly a pasty-faced, short and stumpy or shrivelled up lot, and even worse, poorly dressed. (Of course, there's not much you can wear when you look like that....) In all, they are so would-be Oxbridge that you wish you could send these little WASPys back to their own country. But who knows, maybe the Brits wouldn't want the successors to the dregs of society whom they packed off to American 400 years ago.
Many of these selfish white East Coast liberals only want to keep lower-class whites in their places while stoking the latter's animosity against ALL minorities. They like using the language of political correctness to criticise 'white trash' while making sure Asians never attain anything like WASP status.
Bronx Babe

Boston is racist because it is chock full of academic white liberals who think "tolerance" comes only from talking the talk, without actually walking the walk.
Ditto for most of the northeast and San Francisco.
Come down south. It's the one part of the country that has been forced to openly confront racism head on, and it's the better for it.

Canada: Home of the Moron! There's only one country pathetic enough to elect Jean Chretien for PM for 10 years and that's Canada. If they want to be the last socialist paradise on earth, so be it! I have dual American and Canadian citizenship but I hereby renounce my Canadian citizenship. I'm outta here! Next train south, and more money in my pocket.

To the degenerate who chose to respond to the “two Chinese American females.” First of all I am not of the Asian minority, I am of another minority group, second why does Boston to this day remain the only city in the northeast where there is a significant racial divide? When you venture outside of this area, NY, NJ, DC, MD, CT, and many other areas you will find minorities and whites living in middle to upper middle class areas together, those areas do not exist in Boston. Why? Also have you made friends with the family from HK, or do you just watch them and hope they will move.

Chinese American Female, I hear you loud and clear! One of my old co-workers was an Irish guy from Boston, and he also told me stories of the racism there and how whites would go out to antagonize Chinese and other asians. There's a reason why so many Blacks hate Boston and personify many aspects of that city, such as the pro basketball team the Celtics, with racism. If you saw Spike Lee's 'Do the Right Thing,' you'd notice that one of the white guys in the movie wears a Celtics jersey.

Ok time for me to give my two cents about Boston. I will keep my remarks short and sweet:
The only good thing about Boston is that it makes everywhere else looks so much better in comparison.

To the person who derided the two Chinese females from Boston maybe you should go back to grammar school and learn how to spell you uneducated doofus...and yes, we minority-people are taking over America...get used to it...and be nice to us while you're at it, so you won't piss us off and send you packing back to Ireland

There's plenty of Asians in Boston all right. There also a lot of white trash bad tempered Irishmen too! DUhhh!!! You can't walk down the street without encountering some a--hole white guy with something nasty to say. I wonder why they're so insecure and hate everyone.

In reply to the person picking on the two asians re: Boston: If you don't like it, why won't you mind your own business and stick to White web sites. Why won't you get a life? Wow, a HK family lives across the street from you! Should you get credit because you didn't burn their house down?

To the two Chinese females and their remarks about Boston:
Boston is a racially divided city. But as far as getting a job, you will need friends to help you get one no matter where you live. I don't appreciate the castigating generalizations that the other "Chinese American Female" made about people giving Asians shell shocked looks all the time and that Boston is a city with recial resesntment. Thats BS. Maybe you're just ugly. Maybe you've had some bitter experiences. Wake up, racism is reality. Oh...I've seen asians before..I SEE THEM EVERYDAY AT WORK AND THERE IS A FAMILY FROM HK LIVING ACROSS THE STREET FROM ME!!! DUhhhhh!! Your friends were fired? ALL OF THEM? Maybe they were lazy. Get a life will you?! There are plenty of asians in Boston. Who knows...maybe one day you'll come to terms with the "evil white men", that is conspiring against everyone and everything in your life. Yes, maybe the "evil white men" are going after you and your friends. You'd better watch out!!

     Chinese American female.
It is nice to hear the sentiments of another regarding bean town, I thought it was me. You are correct Boston is racially divided in every way, each group has its specific section and it is preferred that you do not cross the line except to leave you money and then go home. As far as careers you have to have your white friends get you a job, and even then if you want to move up, your friend is the only one who can help you.

Worst city for Asians: Boston, MA. People try to be polite but really, they hate your guts. Surprising though, you would think that since Massachusetts (MA) has so many colleges and universities filled with students from all backgounds, it would be at least an ok livable city for Asians. IT IS NOT. people in Boston are still harboring resentment and hatred over integration and busing; issues that inflamed people over 25 years ago! People still stare shell shocked at Asians because a lot of them never seen us types before.
You have to watch your back everytime you leave the house. I'm talking about attacks, verbal abuse, physical danger and race motivated hate crimes.
As for careers, don't expect to get anywhere. Employers will sabotage your every move. My friends, all highly intelligent, college educated with masters degrees in business, arts etc. were either fired, forced to find another job, or suffered discrimination constantly despite excellent job performances. Why do they hire us in the first place? Engineers or computer people might have it better here. Can't say for sure.
Am I exaggerating? No. After living here for 11 years and giving white society the benefit of the doubt all the time, I can honestly, say, that Boston is home to BIG TIME BIGOTS. All the horrible stuff about what black people have to endure on a daily basis in society happens here. Asians not excluded. Boston is still living in the past.
It's ok to attend school here but whatever you do, don't even consider settling down here or you'll regret it.
As for the idiots out there who naively insist that it doesn't make a difference where Asians live, maybe you should crawl out of the shells you living under and open your eyes to the real world. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Good article about Asians in the South. ("Asian Dixie") One update though. The article says there are about a half million Asians living within the states of the old Confederacy. I recently heard that according to the 2000 census figures, that number has tripled to about a million and a half. So if you're an Asian person who decides to move this way, you won't be alone.

Dallas sucks. I hate living here in this confederate redneck city. And for those of you who are saying "why don't you move", well I am 18 and in HS.

     Madison guy:
Atlanta is a beautiful city considering its size (over 3 million people live in the area). It is also surprisingly hospitable considering it's such a large city. There is a fairly large Asian population, as well as other ethnic and racial groups. The social attitudes are conservative, but not racist. To the extent that prejudice exists, it's no worse than anywhere else in America. I plan to settle in the Atlanta area within the next year.
I can't speak for Houston, but just looking at numbers, it has the 5th largest Asian population in the country among large cities and its Asian population is one of the fastest growing. It seems a little hotter and stickier than Atlanta though.
Neither of these cities is going to be as liberation-minded as Madison, but maybe you'd find that to be a good thing.

Yeah, I'll gladly stay in Texas rolling over in my mattress of $$$$$$. Watch your mouth, son. Come down to the lone star state and we'll straighten you out some, with a good ol' fashion hangin.
Redneck Asian Cowboy

Best city:New york How good is atlanta and Houston? It seems like this web site thinks that they are okay. What type of prejudice is there?
Worst city:Milwaukee and any small majority white city in America.
Madison guy relocating to Atlanta

Cripes, who cares where the asians live or don't live. To insinuate that it's safest or best to live where large groups of asians live is ridiculous. Asians are backstabbers and I don't trust them anymore than the KKK. Life is what you make of it, not who you live with.

Redneck Asian Cowboy, you're an idiot. Stay in Texas, where you and your sweaty wife-beater belong.

How good of a city is Atlanta and Houston for asian americans?

Redneck Dallas? What the heck are you talking about? Texas is the most affluent state in all of the USA! If you want to see rednecks, go to the midwest like Idaho.
There's a unlimited amount of opportunity and potential in Texas so take advantage of it my friend. If you still would prefer to avoid rednecks, move up to communist Canada and work in a government job where homosexual french guys on welfare run the country. Me, I like making money and Texas is a great place for that republican style wealth.

When I was a wee AA teenager, I thought little about race and sought to transcend it. Long story short, I stuck my thumb out somewhere off the Jersey Turnpike and proceeded to visit every square inch of North America. I finally settled in Alaska, and am finding it hard to decide which is the best place for Asians to live. On the one hand I always talk about moving to SF or even back to NY, to be around more Asians and hopefully never deal with racism again. But then, I have to ask myself if it's escape I seek, or is it change? Because towns like San Fransisco and New York don't need my help nearly as much as say, Fairbanks Alaska.
