WHAT YOU SAY
(Updated 4/27/01)

To the "blind as a bad" person, what was the horrendous incident that opened your eyes to the racism that is prevalent in Boston? I went to Boston University and recently moved to Hawaii where I'm taying for 2 years. During my first year in BU I naively couldn't discern any racism in Boston, but by my sophomore year I couldn't help but notice it everyhere. For me it wasn't so much a life-changing incident as a series of little incidents which gave me a rude awakening to the racist city that Boston truly is. Someone put it best "The only good thing about Boston is that it makes every other city look so much better in comparison." :) I concur...SCREW Boston...:)

Cheers

I'm curious to hear experiences from Asian Americans living in those crappy states such as Montana, Iowa, Idaho, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota.

There is no best or worst city for Asians Americans. A city which has a low crime rate and low race related incidences would be livable for anyone regardless of race. As ppl have said, different strokes for different folks. I am an Asian American from NYC and I am tired of hearing ppl saying "oh, San Francisco is the best city for Asians because it has many Asians there" or "Seattle is the best city for Asians because the governor of WA is Asian". If u want to be in a place populated with Asians and not worry about racism from other races, pack ur bags and go back to your respective Asian country ok! I also sense many Asians, especially in California see the whole world like it was Cali and them alone, "Asians in Cali need to be this and that" "Asians in Cali are discriminated by this group and that group", "White ppl in Cali are racist and this and that" "White ppl in Cali are bad and this and that" blah blah blah..... Perhaps many Asians in Cali are victims of their own provincialism and their overzealous feelings of injustices. I do understand their feelings but I also suggest many of them move to other parts of the country or even out of the states and see the world for a change.

Maybe when the Asian Americans here mention Vancouver as an American city they mean North American. I don't know. I'm sure all the Americans who know about Vancouver are aware that it's in Canada.

What about Asian American life in Houston? We've got the largest Asian Population (raw #s and %age) in the second most populous state n the US!

My choice for Best city for Asian Americans would be Seattle or Vancouver, no, not because I live there, but because it is still relatively affordable, and the amenities that would probably be on interest to Asians moreso than other people are very well-dispersed through out the city. I did not say Los Angeles because of crime, nor San Francisco or Honolulu because of expense of living, nor New York because of a combination of the two. If anyone else would like to give their idea of the best place for Asian American/Canadians, feel free.

I was just like you, blind as a bat when it came to racism in Boston. Maybe it would have been better if I lived in ignorant bliss. Until I experienced the most horrendous racism anyone could ever go through, I finally woke up and realized that the school busing attitudes from the 70s were still alive and well. I'm sorry to tell you but Boston is THE most racist city in the Northeast. When other Asians and Black people say that it's racist, they know what they're talking about.

Boston is straight up one of the most racist cities in the world. Ask any black or Asian person who lives there. The Irish Americans, despite the fact that they used to experience discrimination a long time ago, are extremely racist. They're upset that the Celtics finally had to go "black".

This message is for JapLish...could you give me your email address? My formative years were spent in a British school in the Middle East and thus I've always had a special place in my heart for all things British. My nationality is Taiwanese, but that's pretty much all that's Taiwanese about me...:)

Thanks, mate...go Man U...:)

worst asian american cities:

MINNEAPOLIS- it's freakin cold like siberia, or mongolia, or moscow, or iceland, or germany, or sweden. And the diversity sucks.

MIAMI- beautiful city, but not many asians live there. this city belongs to Hispanics.

ATLANTA- atlanta is to black people like what seattle is to asian people, meaning it's mostly a ghetto city.

OAKLAND- oakland is to black people like what san francisco is to asian people. this city also had Oakland A's fans throwing coins and ice at Ichiro Suzuki, i don't know if it was a racial thing but it seems it was. Oakland Raiders fan all look like a bunch of serial killers. if you're going to live in the bay area, don't live in oakland, live in san jose or san francisco.

Hawaii is the best man. Asians seem to get along well with Hawaiians and Somoans for some reason. Don't get me wrong, but white people, black people, and Hispanics are hella cool also, but I feel Asians meaning Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, etc. get along best with Hawaiians and Asian Indians like how Black people best get along with Puerto Ricans.
ASIAN INDIANS AND HAWAIIAN ARE OUR BEST BUDDIES!! VIVA GHANDI AND THAT HAWAIIAN SUMO WRESTLER, AKEBONO.

geez, it's sick, but reassuring that my experience in Boston was not just my own experience. I visited there briefly for a week expecting it to be an accepting kind of place, given that it's a university town and all, but man, they WERE SO RACIST!!

I passed what looked like a regular white person (didn't appear to be white trash --actually appeared to be a normal person) and said good morning to them as it was morning, and the bitch hissed at me some shit about "don't tempt me..." like she was about to get violent. ...'k ... then later I was trying to go shopping, and the clerks were acting like I was invisible.

that's a messed up place.

As a Japanese Brit living in London, I have to admit that the North of the England is pretty grim (don't know about Scotland though). In fact we have a saying "It's grim up North", and it is. Bad weather and bad jobs (rust belt manufacturing jobs or call centres only). London is very cosmopolitan and the best place in Europe I think. Ok the weather is still bad compared to somewhere like Spain, but you get such a mixture of people here. The towns around London are also nice, like Cambridge, and Oxford.

By the way, when us Londoners say Asian, we mean Indian or Pakistani, Chinese or Japanese are Orientals, which is confusing when I go to the US!

I also consider myself a Londoner, not Japanese, English, or British, there is a difference!

To the person who wrote about Asians and Scotland,

Did you get the impression that the Scots were racist or just downright aggressive? I'm not the person who wrote about Scotland, but I thought they were lots friendlier than the English in general. However, I did get the impression that they're quite hostile and aggressive: you always hear about them bullying (white) English people when they move in. Supposedly, the Scots are also the ones exacerbating tensions in Northern Ireland.

I would be curious to know what you think about UK life in general--especially in comparison to Canada. I am an (Asian) American expat who's been living in Oxford for the past 7 years.

To the person whose wondering why people pick Vancouver as a good city. Are you from Vancouver or have you been there? I'm in Vancouver, and I know that it's one of the best cities in the world for Asians outside of Asia. Not only is this place generally very tolerant of Asians, but it's also a place that is in many ways influenced by and open to Asian culture. Of course, in any place outside of Asia where there are a lot of Asians there are going to be certain percentages of non-Asians who want Asians to "go home". Someone once wrote here about Britain: "where else (outside of Asia) would you find Chinese New year greeting cards sold in card shops?", or something close to that. Well, the answer? Vancouver.

Anywhere in Rural pennsylvania is bad for asian americans. I grew up in farm country PA with a bunch of Pennsylvania dutch. Everyone expected me to have an accent or speak another language and they treated me like a foreigner when really I was born in the US and never even set foot in any asian country till I was 16!! People around here are so naive. I was the only asian kid in town for about a thirty mile radius. I never even went to school with another asian until I went to college.

To the Asian person who wrote that Scotland is a welcoming place there is only one reply. That is that he is speaking garbage for when i visited Scotland- Edinburgh and Glasgow i had the feeling that i was gona be attacked or something. Believe me there is alot of racism and bigotry around- so dont be fooled. In Britain the worst places are the North East and cities where a lot of white (unemployed) trash reside. I live in Manchester UK (NW England) and it is an ok or good city for nightlife and restaurants. The women are fine to be around and if you're attractive you may warrant attention from the English Totti(slang for girls). The people are varied and on the whole tolerant. Lastly how can some of you pick Vancouver as a good city to be in. In the news here I was of the opinion that most white canadians hate the chinese and want them to return home!

I've known some Europeans, and yeah, they are fond of Asian women. I mean, the heart wants what it can't get, right? they don't have many Asians there, so it's only natural to find them exotic. The only difference is that in America whites EXPECT to date Asian women while excluding the Asian guys from their women. And worst of all, some American white women seem to have this superiority complex. But trust me, in europe, the women are bound to do a second take on you when you walk by (assuming you dress well or you are handsome, built, or SOMETHING GOOD). The europeans tend to be more fair-minded when it comes to interracial dating. There's none of the "take their Asian whores, exclude the gooks" mentality bullshit that goes on every day here in America. I'm going to go live in Scandanavia and find me some all-natural blondies.

I take strong issue with the claim that southern cities are the worst for minorities. Just look at the 2000 census numbers and the higher level of integration in Southern and western cities vs. places like NY and Chicago.

Good article to read on this subject is at http://www.msnbc.com/news/553046.asp?bt=prgy

Some of the best places in Southern Ca for Asians to live are San Marino (damn wealthy area), Arcadia, anywhere in the San Gabriel area, and Orange County.

Southern cities are very bad for any minorities in my opinion, unless you move to southern FL.

I live just north of Atlanta and every time i drive outside the parameter, I see all these rednecks taunting at me, pointing at me, giving me weird looks, ETC.

Southern people are still not familiar w/asians or any other minorities.

Personally i would much rather live in CA or NYC or Hawaii.

Benji,

I used to go to UH but recently transferred to a mainland school in the Southwest.
When did you transfer to UH, Manoa? I was at UH, Manoa up until June 2000.

Did you grow-up in Boston?

Yeah, I'm not surprised at all that you feel much more comfortable as an Asian person in Hawaii. Hehehe...

Hawaii may actually have 60% Asians instead of the 55% I mentioned. Hawaii can almost be considered an Asian country. LOL... hehehe...

Yeah, Hawaii's economy sucks...

Here's my take on Chicago - i've been here for five years now for school (and more school) and it's definitely lacking in the liberalism or even dynamicism of the coasts but at the same time Midwesterners are generally polite and kind people with a down-to-earth mentality. There is a growing asian population, and it's a very professionally-oriented population. You see asians at bars and clubs that you would only expect to see whites and blacks at, and there's a few places that cater to the asian crowd. And there's Banana Republic here and all Asians like the good ol' BR.

I like it here because of that lack of pretentiousness that you get all the time in LA (maybe i'm different though). I would agree with what someone else said when they said chicago would be on the rise in terms of best cities for asians, but i wouldn't put it on the same level as San Francisco, Seattle, or Honolulu just yet. It'll never be on the same level just because of geography and weather, but because of Chicago's general growth as a major city and a few very good univeristies, there will be a demand among asians.

Asians just need to get the hell out of California. Too damn many postings about California. It's a big country, and you have every right to live in any bit of it. So assert that right!

I've heard Portland is nice

The Best Cities for Asians in my opinion are:

GLENDORA, CA - Beautiful large NEW homes and buildings, Clean, affluent, great schools, affordable.

SAN MARINO, CA - Large Homes, Great prodominantly Asian schools.
SAN GABRIEL, CA - affordable & nice

MONTEREY PARK, CA - Has an Extremely high Asian population, with Asian businesses & restaurants

ALHAMBRA, CA - Has an Extremely high Asian population, with Asian businesses & restaurants

brits have a thing for asian women too. I don't know about their stance on asian men.

Repsonding to Brit-basher and the views on England, yep, all true, the place stinks. That's why the only really decent place there is London. Having said that, I do agree with the other person who pointed out the positive aspects of the place though. Can't stand that phoney American political correctness and friendliness.

Tacoma Washington is a rapidly growing API city in Washington
and close to Seattle and Vancouver Canada.

Can anyone share with me experiences in Bellevue Washington or surrounding areas? We are considering moving there. I am white, my husband is Chinese, and we have a 3year old son. Thanks.

Kalani do you go to UH-Manoa? Go bows...:)

I currently live/study in Hawaii, having transferred here from Boston. Boston certainly had its good points, but I have to say that I feel much more comfortable as an Asian person here in Hawaii. Now if only the Hawaiian economy picked up...:)

GLENDORA, CA. Glendora, although predominantly caucasian,is 8% asian and growing. It is a picturesque, affluent, very safe city with superior schools to that of surrounding cities. Glendora is a lot like Arcadia although Glendora doesn't have as much traffic.

I would say Detroit is probably the worst city for Asian-Americans to live in, if only because they all seem to think you're Japanese and out to steal their jobs or something. Of course, I suppose Detroit is really the worst city for anyone in America, seeing as the New Economy seems to have completely passed it by.

Isn't there less of a craze for Asian female-White male kind of relationships in Britain? Asians are rare in the British media but it seems to me that when they do show Asians they would show Asian men just as often as Asian women. I wonder if Europeans have the same general negative impressions of Asian men as Americans do (due to stereotypes in the media).

Hawaii is probably one of the best places for Asians.

Although the job market isn't that good, Honolulu does have it's benefits.
For one, if you're pissed-off at a lot of white people. Hawaii is the place for you. It's almost reverse racism overhere.

We have a Hawaiian term, "haole", which means foreigner... and guess what?... that term is specifically designated for "White people". Some "White people" find that term particularly annoying/degrading even though it's not really a bad word unless the words "dumb", "f**king", or "stinking" is attached to it. On many occasions have I heard some of my Filipino, Chinese, and especially Hawaiian or Samoan classmates use the phrases: "dumb haole", "f**king haole", "stink haole", etc. This was done in private and even sometimes used in public against "haole people".

Also, Asians make up at least 55% of Hawaii's population, while Hawaiians/part-Hawaiians make about 16%, other minorities about 4%, and White people only make up 25% (that's only because of the numerous military bases they have in Hawaii). Asians are rather safe in Hawaii, it's the White folks that have to watch what they say and do.
