WHAT YOU SAY

I was falling over laughing when I saw the link "Houston-San Diego Deathmatch" because I thought it was referring to the Astros and the Padres. However, after reading the entries, I still find it odd that there are arguments.
I live in Houston, but have visited San Diego many, many times. It's a great city for everyone and I don't have any problems with it. The observations that H-Town Dude made were similar to ones I made as well. Both cities are great in their own unique ways and are places were Asian Americans can live and thrive.
The only swaps I would make are as follows:
San Diego gets more authentic Asian eateries and either a Chinatown or a Little Saigon from Houston in exchange for Houston getting San Diego's cleaner beaches more moderate weather and a few In-N-Out Burger locations. That sounds fair to me!!!

Lived in San Diego for a year and a half...it sucks big time. Not very diverse, very conservative and racist (KKK, Aryan Nations HQ's). You have the element of the military, which in most cases is predominantly conservative and undereducated. There is a large Filipino population just past Sorrento Valley, but that's about it. Whites stick with whites, blacks with blacks, etc. Go up to the nice areas, Del Mar/La Jolla and you get mostly upscale whites. Pretty damn homogeneous. Go to the less desirable places, east of the 15 and you'll find the minorities or the trailer trash white folk. Lived in all parts of CA. Best diversity=San Jose area where all races are mixed in. Even in SF it is segregated...the best areas are congregated by the whites and the less desirable places are left for the minorities.

Big Mighty Apple:
"It's the only city in the world where people of other cultures actually talk to one another."
I lived in NY for a few monthes when I was interning several years ago. You're right that NY can be a great city. It's a salad bowl (rather than a melting pot) -- very diverse with ethnic groups remaining true to their cultures and identities. But I dont agree with your statement above.
The most apparent thing I've noticed about NYers is that they're either very aggressive (in a flirtacious way), or they're very hostile (in an offensive way). In both case, they somehow always catch me off guard. Perhaps I'm just not use to it b/c I grew up in the south. NY is a great place to visit, but I have to think twice about residing there permanently.
One other thing that I dont feel comfortable in NY is the lack of respect or support from asians (especially the older ones or the fobs). They have been the most hostile to me (even when they flirt, they do it in a condescending way). I had been screamed at before for asking someone else a question. They talked about me behind my back, assuming I dont understand their language (when I do). I usually just ignore it, b/c I dont want to make a big scene and risk any embarassment (on their part)...some of them are elders, I do not say anything back b/c I was raised to respect them. But they always manage to make me feel belittled. Is it b/c it's apparent that I'm not a native? I dont know, I just know they make me feel uncomfortable.

H-town dude:
I was seriously bothered by your implicit observation that 30 AF/WM couples for 3 AM/WF couples is a good thing. If your point was that you see more interracial couples in SD than in Houston, that's fine. But why was the racial/gender breakdown of the couples relevant to your point?
The fact that you took the trouble to break those couples down by racial/gender makeup tells me that you were more interested in showing that WM/AF couples are acceptable whereas AM/WF couples are, at best, an anomaly. My suspicion is only heightened by the fact that you note that your wife is Asian (I take that to mean that you're not). Is that your subtle way of trying to keep AM in their place?
Your patronizing observation was unnecessary to answering this survey, and it was unappreciated.

Houston sux. That's why Asians from Houston always come out to California to party. I've been to the niteclubs where the Asians hang out in Houston and it doesn't compare to LA. LA has the best looking Asian girls in the US. It only makes sense since we've got the largest AA population. Plus the weather just straight up sux in H-town. Where would you rather go to rollerblade...Santa Monica or Galveston. Please.... Most AA don't even consider Houston to be a place to visit or vacation. Nuff said.
