I respect Vancouver for Asian-friendliness. Nonetheless, being the post-whore that I am, I have to correct you Gary. Sorry for being anal, but it's not 600,000 Chinese. According to the 1996 Canadian Census, Greater Vancouver was 312,330 Chinese to be exact..93% of whom reside in the lower mainland municipalities (Richmond etc). not too spread out to me. Not enough to have 600k by now! I have relatives there. I know too. But much better than Houston I might add.
as an aside,
Greater LA (tho much larger) has half a million chinese,...440,000 filipinos, over quarter million vietnamese, biggest Thai (Thai-Town), Japanese, Korean communities
in N. America etc. Though LA is larger, think about this, Theres almost as many Asians in the LA area (asians not as far from each other as u think) than the population of HOUSTON Texas! Even tho LA metro is huge, you really feel the asian presence all over. they move around! And All within a 1/2 hr drive.
Still, the percentage is much higher in Vancouver. Props to them. I respect Vancouver. It can really back up its claim and its a true contendor for asian mecca.

San Francisco? Smelly
place, grimy place. No
thanks, I'll take
Houston. I think
Vancouver can show SF
what a TRUE and CLEAN
compact, high density
city is all about.
firstly, SF was not my original concern but your ignorance is too good to pass up. muahaha! that said, I come to SFs defense. Did you know that Asians (thats the relevant topic right?)are the largest minority in SF METRO? almost balanced w/ Latinos? You want Clean? try Sunset neighborhoods of SF. Not enough? try Daly City, S.SF, Oakland/East Bay, Fremont...the ENTIRE SILICON VALLEY...better yet..the rest of the Bay Area! Its sparkling clean. Oh and theyve got WEST Asian Variety too Indians/Pakistanis) ..dont worry. you seem to be quite anxious about them. But I digress..
LA is not quite the
world city that even
compares to London, NY
and even Amsterdam
1. Is Houston or LA related to NYC?
2. Uh, lets work harder on
Houston's world reknowned
prominence huh?
3. 'nuf said.
you'd be amazed how
those flashy nightclubs
of downtown Houston
streets make Hollywood
party streets look
nothing more like an
Anglo-version of Tijuana.
Houston has a dead downtown come midnight. Sorry, Ive been there so cant fool me ;) And not many other choices for nightlife btw. In LA, you can choose. Please, there are more places than Hollywood. Ever heard of SM? Pasadena? West LA? to name a FEW? note, I havent even mentioned downtown either. a true 24hr city like LA makes Houston look like a ghost town. Ask anyone who has better nightlife (NON TX/CA Plz)
BTW. This topic is about ASIAN-friendly cities bub. Lets talk about ASIAN nightlife shall we? ASIAN clubs in LA? Tons. Houston? uh...probably...but c'mon. Humor me please.
Nightlife........there
is NO point in the LA
geography that COMPARES
to the architectural style
of downtown Houston. It
blows smoke all over
Hollywood.
1.Since when was hollywood the architectural epicenter of LA? I dont understand the obsession w/it either.
2. Since when did architecture alone dictate the success of "nightlife" in the long history of mankind....PEOPLE have usually been more much effective in creating LIFE...much less nightLIFE..hate to break it to ya, but architecture plays a supporting role here
3.Along w/ NYCs Pei, Meier, and Pelli, LA is the recognized, Worldwide.. worldlyman, as the WORLD CAPITAL of ARCHITECTURE-especially post-modernist. Eric owen moss, Frank O. Ghery, Morphosis, Pereira call it home. Many Pritzker prize winners here. the day Houston's tacky neon-lined obtuse "avant-garde" scrapers, and downtown brownfields are thought of as less "cheesy" and "gaudy" than LAs prime examples [-try the Getty Center, Disney concert hall, new Moneo cathedral, Pac Design Center, Library Tower (Pei Cobb Freed), etc. etc.] , is the day Houston becomes world reknowned for anything but trucks, stupid simpleton presidents, and cowboys. (and pretty soon, smog)
I guess some untraveled
and superior Cali kids
who haven't digested...
much have no appreciation
of architecterual aesthetics.
Again..Houston, an architectural spotlight? please. Looks more like a tacky China- boomtown transplant. What eyesores. You are a prime example of an architectural ignoramus. Hope WORLDLYman is not the best Houston has to offer in this "worldly" arena of knowledge
with their OWN unique
ambience, to boot
Please. OWN ambience and "unique" are LALALand's middle...er other name. Ask any non Californian or Texan
So what if the LA
papercount is bigger?
So What? What many Texan honey-tonks fail to realize is this...QUALITY. size equates to authenticity. If you want the more true and up-to-date ASIAN food, culture, and business and social atmosphere... size (beyond the scope of truck tires, chili-cookouts crowds, and neck thickness) will give you the economic sphere-of-influence from the pac-rim that Houston simply cannot compete with. Were talkin the essence of asian AMBIENCE-which seems so important for you. After all, isnt this what were chattin' about...y'all?
speaking about up-to-dateness, there is a tremendously dynamic asian business environ in LA only rivaled by SFs. Trade w/ the pac rim has made LAs harbors busiest in the nation over NY/NJ. Chinese immigrants alone have pumped tens of billions into the local economy. LA is home to a majority of the Japanese/Korean North American Headquarters including Nissan, Honda, Sony, Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Samsung, etc. Houston's got well...the gulf, post-Enron, teetering Energy giants, and Oil Barons. Congratulations to you ASIAN superstars!
btw. stop pickin on our cops worldlyman! We angelinos who are so boorishly proud of our Asian-friendly image that we come to this forum hate it when you superior texans bring up the cops issue! It really takes the cake! If you havent already unfairly tarnished LAs ASIAN-friendly image w/mention of Houstons opulent and tasteful neon-accentuated scrapers, Nigerian Restaraunts, and LAs sub-Houston level world prominence, the San Diego cop bashing is just too much!! (ehem..note-sarcasm)

A few months ago on this forum, someone said that Cali cops are gentlemen compared to Texas cops.
Officially hogwash now. That's bad news for us Asians and others who are not white.
Well, get this, the 1/19/03 San Diego Union Tribune reports that the San Diego police force.......fires their guns far more than any other major force in the nation! (Yep, even more so than the quite bigger LAPD!)
Like I told you Cali folks in the middle of last year, those San Diego cops are very aggressive in messing with people's civil liberties. They set up impromptu checkpoints just to mess with regular people who mean no harm!
San Diego's police are just definitely more on the Orwellian side than Houston's police, simply stated.
(And no, it's not just because we are close to the border and they're checking for illegals........that's NOT the job of the Police. It's Border Patrol's and they don't really close off urban streets for that. Or I haven't seen them doing that here; that's what San Onofre is for apparently.)
That's one facet of San Diego life that hit me like a brick upon moving here.
Do my vibes steer me right or what? :)
I told you that the San Diego Police are much more of a redneck outfit. In comparison, Houston Police had been cleaned up by ex-mayor Kathy Whitmire and current black mayor Lee Brown ...........and I didn't really fear the HPD too much (though the unincorporated cops in Bellaire, Hedwig Village and other rich tax-out districts scare me).
I've seen Asian cops in the HPD, but so far I've not yet seen an Asian San Diego officer.
And.....you see the CHP always out in force up and down California's 5, 805, 405 and wherever giving tickets to bolster revenues to support programs (some good, some not). In Texas, the equivalent Department of Public Safety cops are not seen nearly as often.
Whether you love or hate Texas......it goes to show that the Lone Star State is more libertarian. (And that can be good and bad.)

Surely is interesting when a rising power like Houston irritates the usual snob class who act as if SF, NY and LA are synonymous or something.
People in NY look down on LA. LA is not quite the world city that even compares to London, NY and even Amsterdam, from what I've seen. LA is just an older, more crowded Atlanta, Dallas or Houston. It sure is something else when LA has to count far out so-called edge cities, actually their OWN cities, like Anaheim, Riverside and such to make it bigger than it really is, that's cheesy. It's just that LA has such media to propagandize itself. I mean, when LA never makes the top twenty in "world's favorite cities" in Conde Nast and other polls, really. People who travel can see what real cities are about.
San Francisco? Smelly place, grimy place. No thanks, I'll take Houston. I think Vancouver can show SF what a TRUE and CLEAN compact, high density city is all about.
Houston is the only place that mixes good comfortable living with great diversity of different nightlife districts (with their OWN unique ambience, to boot). What other place can say that? Volume isn't everything and in terms of style, you'd be amazed how those flashy nightclubs of downtown Houston streets make Hollywood party streets look nothing more like an Anglo-version of Tijuana.
LA's popular nightlife streets are cheesy and gaudy. What passes for "architecture" out there? Tower Records? Fredericks of Hollywood? And, *snicker*, Hollywood at Highland?
Downtown Houston, you can walk from club to bar while appreciating the magnificent splendor of the NCNB tower, the Wortham Center, Hobby Center, Jones Plaza, Bayou Place, Alley Theater, the Rice Hotel.........need I say more? Oh, if we don't feel like urbanizing in Houston, we do have our cheesy nightlife street full of gaudy neon (oops, Sunset Strip style) along Richmond Avenue.....and oops, we have our eclectic alternative nightlife district in The Montrose area if want urban but with a neighborhood vibe. Yeah, we lack good nightlife in H-town.
I guess some untraveled and superior Cali kids who haven't digested much have no appreciation of architecterual aesthetics.
In terms of ethnic representation, you situationally see Filipinos, Salvadorans, Koreans, Japanese, Indians, Brits, Russians, Swedes, Taiwanese and such in Houston in the malls and stuff pretty much as you would in LA. So what if the LA papercount is bigger?
Are you going to meet all of LA's 2 million Asians? Or Houston's 300,000 Asians? Who cares. As long as we can get a great variety of pho, or that funky Northern Chinese food, or Taiwanese boba drinks in Houston, so what if LA has more volume?
And I'll tell you what, it's easier to find Nigerian and Pakistani restaurants in Houston than in Los Angeles!
And hey, what's wrong with having Little Nigeria? You "tolerant" Cali people have something against sub-Saharan Africans or something?

worldlyman,
sure, you got yours. thats fine and all, but what you have doesnt compare...especially the nightlife. nobody would even consider Houston to be in the same class as LA. get real. houston's nightlife is better than say san antonios or phoenix or indianapolis, but dont even try to compare houston to real cities like LA, NY, or SF.
ps. dont understand why u keep bringing up the fact that you've got a little nigeria. who cares? u only bring that up since there isnt anything else to brag about. houston's diversity doesnt compare to LA or NY or SF. get over it. only thing houstons got on anybody is yao ming.

Edluva,
I think you are just using the old bean count thing.
The fact is LA has about 2 million or so Asians to complement the 15 million Los Angeles CMSA region, while Houston has almost 300,000 Asians to complement its 4.5 million CMSA region.
But what Houston has...........is packs quite a kick. I mean you LA people think that Houston is only cowboys and white people along with some Mexicans.
But Houston has three Little Saigons, a Little Korea, a massive pan-Asian commercial district on the NW side, two Chinatowns.....not to mention Little Pakistan/Manila/Nigeria all sharing the same long strip of Bissonnet St. And just like LA, Houston has tons of Latino zones. And African American zones.
So what if LA has more? Can't take away from Houston. We got ours.
Persians, Russians, Brits, Armenians, Uzbeks, Lebanese, French........all these people who are moving to Houston. LA is not the only place to attract foreign classes. Face it.
Nightlife........there is NO point in the LA geography that COMPARES to the architectural style of downtown Houston. It blows smoke all over Hollywood.
Plus, Houston has nightlife in the Richmond Strip, the Montrose, the Rice Village, down in Galveston, a new growing scene on the urban street called Washington Ave, the Heights..................Not bad for a CMSA metro of 4.5 million, eh?
LA nightlife districts all have a homogenous to Disneyfied air to them.........at least in Houston, the different nightlife areas have a unique street look to them. And downtown Houston offers a skyscraper sophistication that Los Angeles cannot offer. Period.
Read Gary McCarty's, a writer for los angeles.com, "Houston is Fun" in the Romance section as to why he sees Houston being just as fun as LA, if not more so.
I love Los Angeles........but face it, LA's getting some growing competition out on the Texas Gulf Coast...........not every civic advancement is happening in LA. So get over it. Let other cities shine.
(When VIPs from around the world need to get advanced medical treatment, where do they go? Los Angeles or "small town" Houston? Hmmm.)

LA has 2 little saigons (biggest outside Vietnam!), 5 Chinatowns (one of them HUGE--imagine pasadena, TX times 2 and all chinese! only 10 miles from downtown by the way, covers 11 suburbs CONTINUOUSLY!), 3 little tokyos (one in downtown, one 15miles away), 4-5 Ktowns (3 of them right next to Chinatowns, 1 HUGE in downtown LA-biggest in USA w/a KOREAN JUMBOTRON NY style!!!). Heres another "kicker", you want nightlife? take the metro to westside. It equals about ten times Houstons measly nightlife. Oh, LA area is about 35%latino thank you. Only LA proper is 55%. Add to that: biggest Mex, Korean Persian, Armenian, Thai, 2nd biggest Jewish, Russian pops in USA all within midwilshire-midtown? Not getting along? your claim sounds suspect to me Texan. Just face it, Houston has neither the depth nor breadth to compare w/ a true world class city like LA. Its a small town in our books. Racially, we have our probs, thats why were more complex. Houston just doesnt see us. P.S.Proportionality???..2mil/14mil=14% 300k/5mill=6% you do the math. P.P.S. L.A. recieved 80% of its asians the last 20 yrs.
