Half of Young AA Finish College

ully 50% of Asian Americans aged 25-29 had earned at least a bachelor's degree as of 1997.
That rate is nearly double that of the completion rate for the general American population of that age group. The rate was 29% for Whites in the 25-29 group, 14% for African Americans and 11% for Hispanics, according to the U.S. Census Burea. The completion rate was significantly higher among persons aged 25-29 than for the overall population of all ethnic groups, but the difference was most marked among Asian/Pacific Islanders.
The high college-completion rate of young Asian Americans pulled up the rate of the combined Asian American population to 42%, 75% higher than the overall U.S. rate of 24%. By comparison the overall college completion rates is 25% for Whites, 13% for African Americans and 10% for Hispanics.
The most statistically visible impact of high college completion rates among Asian Americans are median income levels 23% higher than the U.S. population at large. Americans with only a bachelor's degree earn a median income of $32,022 while those with only a high school degree earn $17,143. Those with some college education but no degree earn $19,006 while those with an AA degree earn $24,800. (7/11/00)
