TOP ASIAN-POPULATED STATES

alifornia was home to 3.8 million Asian Americans in 1997, more than lived in any other state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Between 1990 and 1997 the population of Asian/Pacific Islander Californians grew by 829,623, a 28% increase. No other state came close. New York added 243,609, bringing its Asian total to 952,736. Hawaii stayed in third place with 748,748.
     In terms of Asian population growth, however, Texas was third, adding 192,544, bringing its total to 523,972 for fourth place overall. New Jersey and Illinois switched places, New Jersey moving up into fifth with 423,738 and Illinois dropping to sixth with 382,806.
     Rounding out the top ten were:

  1. Washington, 311,310
  2. Florida, 253,118
  3. Virginia, 232,9300
  4. Massachussetts, 209,871.

     With 1.2 million, Los Angeles County had more Asian/Pacific Islanders than all states outside California. It's unlikely to lose that title anytime soon. It added a whopping 190,000, more than double Orange County which added 91,501 for second place in growth. They were followed by Santa Clara, home of Silicon Valley, which added 76,905, Queens County, N.Y., 75,220, and San Diego County, California, 73,383.
     In terms of Asians as a percentage of the general population, counties in Hawaii took the top four spots, ranging between 58 and 64%. They were followed by San Francisco County with 35% and Santa Clara County with 21%. Asians make up about 15% of Los Angeles County.
