WHAT YOU SAY

I don't know about the rest of you but in 23+ years of practice I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times a client asked me what law school I went to. Ultimately, it's not the law school from whence you came but the lawyering in the lawyer. (Put another way- It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog.) Maybe the problem we Asians have is one of being overly enamored of labels-form over substance.
For the record- rankings of law schools are based on a variety of factors and depending which factors you give greater weight to the "top 25" law schools are essentially interchangable.
There's more to the practice of law than the name on your diploma.

I can't believe the University of Pennsylvania was omitted. Penn, an Ivy League institution, consistently ranks among the top 10 law schools, according to US News and World Report. Moreover, its small class size and grading policies foster a collegial environment where students compete more with themselves than with their fellow students. Additionally, Penn offers good clinical experience, and its diverse graduates go on to succeed at top firms, the non-profit sector, and government agencies. Fortunately, the people who make the hiring decisions know better.

Asian-American History Educated,

Listen to yourself, you're a coward. You shouldn't even consider law as a career until you grow thicker skin, a spine, and some balls.

Go back West if you can't take the pressure. East Coast Asians are managing just fine w/o you.

I agree with Annapolis and original poster.

Law schools are rated in tiers, and many top undergrads will say that only the top 14 are worth going to.

Tier 1: Yale/Harvard/Stanford, in that order. Corporate law minded students usually head for H, while teaching and/or clerkship minded students go for Y.

Tier 2: Columbia/Chicago/NYU, no particular order. Chicago better for federal clerkships, CLS and NYU better for Cravath/SC types.

Rounding out the top 14: UMich, Boalt, V, Cornell, Gtown, P, Duke, Northwestern.

Out of the last 8, umich is probably the 7th best, but that is debatable. Gtown is probably hardest to get a biglaw job out of, since there are so many people in one class (500+). Cornell likely the least prestigious, but classes of only 150 even out the job prospects. Mind you all this is professional school, marketability is important.

UCLA is a second-rate school- give us a break.

The voters have no clue.

Law school rankings come generally in groups. It's hard to figure out who's better than whom in term of 5th versus 6th place. In general, the tiers of elite U.S. law schools can be summed up as:

Yale - by far tops compared to anyone else.

Stanford/Harvard - either two or three, but they're about equal.

Chicago/Columbia/NYU - in no particular order.

Virginia/Michigan/Boalt/Cornell/Duke/Georgetown/UCLA/etc. - Beyong these schools, no one at elite law firms really cares. Don't get me wrong, there are good law schools in addition to these, but if you want to work for Cravath or Wachtell, you had better attend these aforementioned schools.

I think the voters here don't know what the hell they're talking about. UCLA more prestigious than Columbia, Michigan, NYU, UVA, and Georgetown? Not to mention, the people didn't even hear about Chicago? This must be the 6 yr old AA brat from So Cali poll on top law schools...

I have to agree with Michael Karra. It is known in the academic world, that yale law surpasses harvard law.

Yale is by far the most prestigious!

To UCLA Asianguy:

I am an AA from the east coast, and yes, AA in the east coast are whitewashed--because if they are not, they are "killed off" politically, socially, academically, professionally, and etc--got the picture. I see some of it here in the west coast as well. If you are from Cali and plan on attending law school at Virginia or Georgetown, be ready for a washdown, and you will hate it every single time, and if you prove to be immune to the white-washdown, you will end up back here in the west coast.

If you are interest in the east coast, attend Harvard, no less, no more, period.
