To Pre-med II:
I came out of a small 2nd tier liberal arts university in the south. My advice, I think you should focus on doing well in your classes especially the sciences. Coming from a small school, you have the advantage of getting to know your professors very well. So when the time comes, you can get a "personal" recommendation. You should defintiely volunteer in a hospital, get involved with campus organizations (tried to get a position that shows your leadership skills), do something that will make you stand out from the rest of the pre-meds (missionary trips, volunteer with Red Cross, EMT, etc), some reseach will help, but not neccessary, do well on the MCATs (30 or above, I recommend taking a course like Kaplan), if you want to be competitive your GPA should be 3.7 or higher, have a good reason for going into medicine (not just wanting to help people), most importantly enjoy your college experience and don't stress too much about getting in. If you have the desire and motivation, you will definitely get in somewhere. For me, I had a 3.8 overall GPA, 4.0 science GPA, 32 on the MCAT, played varsity tennis for my university, Captain of the team in senior year, involved with a few campus organizations (vice president of one), selected to go to the NCAA leadership conference, volunteered in hospital, did research at Duke for one year after graduation in genetics (I definitely recommend taking a year of to do something you enjoy. I know alot of people regreted that they didn't take any time off), I taught tennis for 6 years, etc. I applied to 8 schools, got 4 interviews from Emory, Michigan, U. of Virginia, and Cinncinati. Accepted into Michigan and Virginia. Decided to come to UVA. I didn't apply to any Ivy league schools or any of the top med schools, because I didn't think my personality would of fit in. I was looking for a good school with a relaxed atmosphere and a nice campus, but not cut throat competition. Hope this helps.

I am currently a freshman at Simmons College, a school not heard of by almost all Asians! I have aspirations of going on to Medical School, however I don't really know what I should and shouldn't be doing. Need some advice on anything and everything. Scores, planning, etc.

UC San Diego is among the top 15 medical schools in the nation. There are amazing research opporunities (like some of the best neuroscience and bioengineering in the country) and strong clinical training with a diverse patient population, especially if you care about free clinics and serving underserved minorities. La Jolla is beautiful too and you can't do much better than studying anatomy or cramming biochem in 80 degree weather along the beach. :)

Pretty highly ranked but still under rated. Exceptional research, strong clinical training, and a location that's paradise. The UCs in general are among the best medical schools and best tuition buys in the nation.

UCSF is one of the very best medical schools in the nation. Harvard will always have the biggest name because this society has been raised believing the big H is the standard of all schools. Taking nothing away from Harvard, UCSF is just as good. It offers a more balanced curriculum that prepares much better for the boards and more hands on clinical training. UCSF's commitment to the community and public health are also exceptional. With the new Mission Bay campus being constructed and a new medical center to be constructed by 2010, UCSF will remain one of the very best for good. Also if you're a Cali resident, you can't beat the tuition and quality of life.

Duke is known for its high diversity of students. It surely has more Asians than Harvard. I've been accepted to Duke, and was wondering why there is a negative perception of Duke by the people here.
