LISA LING & RICK YUNE

he's the most watched Asian woman on American TV. He's the year's hottest Asian American movie hunk. She's 26. He's 29. She's 5-5. He's 6-1. She's Chinese. He's Corean. Both are unquestionably American. She's daringly bubbly. He's recklessly intense. What makes them special to many AA minds is that they defied the odds and the unwritten laws of the American media to become the lone bona fide Asian American star couple.
     Rick Yune was barely one when his family left his native Seoul, Corea for Silver Springs, Maryland. His education has been enviably ivy-covered -- private schools topped off by a Wharton MBA. Then came a stint as a Wall Street stock trader and modeling for Versace and Polo. He made a memorable film debut in December 1999 as a young Japanese American husband accused of murder in Snow Falling on Cedars. Yune's character walks and gets the girl. A breathless Newsweek profile didn't hurt his career. His intense and classic Asian features add sizzle to The Fast and the Furious (2001) and will undoubtedly do the same for The Fence (2001).
     Lisa Ling is a Sacramento native who got her start in TV at the age of 15 as a reporter for a syndicated teen magazine show called Scratch. Just as she was about to leave for Boston University, Channel One asked her to become one of its peripatetic on-air reporters. She attended USC while working full-time at Channel One's Hollywood studio. All her dates at USC were white, it's rumored. Soon after graduating she joined the panel of The View, ABC's popular daytime talkshow and began spending time with a Disney exec named Morgan Wandell. The fact that Disney is ABC's parent company led to resentment and innuendo. What really raised AA eyebrows was an Old Navy commercial showing Ling cavorting with a group of men and uttering the line "I like my men strong and good-looking". The beef? None of the five men are Asian.
     Little wonder that many were skeptical of rumors that surfaced in early 2000 that Ling and Yune had become a couple. Some speculate that it's a sign that Asian men are ascendant. Others suspect it's just Ling's effort at rehabilitating her image with her Asian American viewership. Still others are just glad to see an Asian-Asian star couple at long last.

I firmly beieve that LL is culturally and racially absent-minded either or she is a closet racist. First she sponsored a Target ad, which has been known to support and sell white supremist goods...i.e...goods with signs of "88" or "Hail Hitler". Then, she appears on The View during Halloween week exploiting America's cultural melting pot dressed to ridicule a stereotypical African American "sista". She wore an "afro" and a basketball outfit. Where does LL attain the right to exploit the African-American culture? If I were Star Jones I would be outraged. She either needs a better informed publicist or she is a closet racist. I hope it is not the latter, because if so, she has no right to represent ANY strata or demography in American society where racism was once permitted.

I'm an Australian white girl who LOVES asian men. I agree, Rick is a hottie.
I have only seen Lisa in one photo as 'The View' isn't aired over here and she's not much to look at. She's no 'Shu Qi' that's for sure. But that's just my opinion.

But as long as Rick is happy, that is all that should matter. Who cares who he dates, as long as she treats him with respect and love. It's not really any of our business. Is it?

It's great to see Korean actors making their mark in Hollywood...

I went to high school with Lisa Ling in Fair Oaks and she is a manipulative, self centered individual. My guess would be her stint with Rick Yune was more for the image then anything else. I wonder if she knows that everybody that knows her from her past can't stand her.
I must say though she is a very hard worker.

Who Lisa or Rick date is not really anybody's business. And the nationalities or races of their dates should not be something we make such big deals out of. The fact that this kind of argument or speculation (or whatever you all want to call it) exists is ridiculous. I hope people are dating people not races.

Personally, I just want to see more Asian actors/actresses and TV personalities as they are, not as kung-hoo fighting cops and gangs.

"Go find your own date" what you say is true if the wonderful world of America was equal in every way. What you said is funny and we can laugh, but for the years of abuse Asians (especially Asian males) have taken from the media, you can't help but ask yourself, how the image of Ling in the Old Navy commercial perpetuates the myth of super feminine, docile and submissive Asian women. It's not funny when the jokes on you. But, i guess Asians are use to it, we really don't have a strong voice to stand up for us, and it's really not in our culture. Until the Asian Americans of today realize this, keep laughing, at yourself.

Now she is leaving The View for National Geographic Explorer on MSNBC starting December 6th.

I think Lisa and Rick might have broken up because on the View a couple of weeks ago Star Jones was trying to push Lisa onto Peter Facinelli (he happened to be a guest). Lisa was busy protesting because Peter is married to Jennie Garth. She didn't mention anything about already having her own man (i.e. Rick Yune).

No offense, but Lisa Ling seems to be so wrapped up in her own view points that she comes off as narrow minded and egotistical. If she ever stops being self-absorbed, let me know b/c I don't EVER think that will happen.

As for Rick, HE IS GOREGEOUS! And this is coming from a white girl who PREFERS Asian guys, like a lot of my girlfriends. He should get rid of his ego-centric girlfriend and find someone worthy of his time.

Is Lisa that special? The clubs I go to in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai have hotter chicks in my opinion.
You guys seem to overrate Rick. Good luck to him that he does not peak with the Bond movie and is forgotten as with most Bond villains. Asians with such faces always seem to have an attitude.(I am Asian and I've had to shut up a few of them).
Vin, seemed to be a humble guy on a TV interview. But XXX is just a crude American ripoff of the Bond films for those who do not like the usual tuxed good white looks.

I don't know why our culture promotes such an obsession about celebrities personal lives. Rick and Lisa are always on "display" and unfortunately, find themselves set up as "role-models" whether they wish to be or not. The fact that these two talented, attractive people have become a "couple" should only bolster a sexier image of Asians in general. Good luck Lisa and Rick!!

Who cares about colour? If a white woman is with a black man or an asian guy is with a black woman, who cares!? Our blood is all red and I think it's time to get past 'she should be with him cause they're the same race' crap. People are people.
On the other hand, I think all ethnic communities need strong representation to show people of all colours that there is a bigger world out there...that we can do whatever we want. Lisa Ling and Rick Yune together? If they're into each other, why not? If Rick digs African pygmies, more power to him. If Lisa thinks Romanian gypsies are all that, more power to her. It's time to get past the colour, people, and just see the person.
