IS THE AA GENDER DIVIDE REAL?
(Updated Wednesday, Jan 22, 2025, 06:38:55 AM)

sian American women are abandoning AA men by the millions. Young AA women seek out any race of men but their own. Women like Amy Tan write books and make movies that dump on AA men and glorify Asian women in relationships with white men.
That's the perception of many AA men.
On what do they blame this state of affairs? Brainwashing by media that play up white men while cutting Asian men off at the knees. Desire for payback by AA women who feel slighted by their families and Asian society. Large numbers of non-Asian men with blind fetishes for Asian women. Some even acknowledge that Asian men are often too fixed in their ideas of how a woman should look and behave, causing many AF to feel devalued.
Other Asian Americans see AF outmarriage rates as merely a natural state of affairs for a 4% minority population that includes many recent immigrants. The outmarriage gender gap will narrow as growing Asian population centers provide ready access to bigger pools of singles. Besides outmarriage is't the same as rejecting one's racial identity, they argue. Many AF who outmarry retain strong identification with their Asian identity.
Is there really an Asian American gender divide? Is so, what's behind it? If not, what's behind the perception?

WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Excellent point Villageidiot, you've read my mind and stolen the words right out my mouth.

Movies, music, and television reflects what the majority wants to hear or see. Another words, most of White America will not pay to watch a romantic film involving an AM/WF relationship. In most cases they would rather see AM's play that sterotypical role of either geeks or gangsters.

So what does the media do about profitability growth? Appeal to the mass by marketing what they want to see or hear. AM's potraying a non-sterotypical role will not generate enough revenue.

Perhaps more telling than linking the supposedly "low" 2% occurrence of eating disorders with media images is the fact that two thirds of the females surveyed felt overweight when only 16% were clinically so.

An eating disorder is one of the most severe symptoms of an unhealthy self image. To claim that someone without an eating disorder is automatically self content is as tenable as saying that George W. and Osama bin Ladin are good friends since they haven't shot each other yet.

@ villageidiot:

It was the British Medical Association that said 2% of females 15-30 years old had eating disorders. Without citing any source, you claim instead that it is "most." I guess each of us can draw his own conclusions about the truth.

Village, you haven't understood my question. I posed it at least twice. I never made the broad claim you attribute to me, that the media don't influence people. The scope of my question was narrow. Many AMs blame the unfavorable perceptions AFs allegedly have of AMs on disparaging images of AMs in the media. For the final time, how can that be when AFs typically have extensive contact with AMs, and images of AMs in the media -- disparaging, flattering, or neutral -- are uncommon?

Your claim brings to mind the example of an AF who has a lifetime of contact with AMs one day seeing an episode of "Bonanza" and thinking, "So THAT'S what AMs are like. AMs are typically cooks for families of Jewish bachelor cowboys." Improbable, isn't it? Whatever AF impressions of AMs may be, they have got to be influenced more by real contact with AMs than by media images of AMs, right?

Your misunderstanding of the scope of my question also led you to draw a false analogy to what you say is "the extreme need" in Westernized Asian countries "to appear White." If this extreme need were analogous to the unfavorable impressions AFs in the U.S. allegedly have of AMs, for your analogy to work, it would have to be that media images of Asians in Asian countries are rare and disparaging. Accordingly, despite all of the contact Asians have with Asians in Asia, their impressions from such contact would be overborne by rare but disparaging images of Asians in the Asian media.

You next contradict yourself by saying that "the media does not cause people to behave in certain ways... ." Well, Village, now you are denying the point you've been arguing in favor of: that the behavior of AFs in the U.S. and Asians in Asia is influenced by images in the media.

I also don't know quite what to make of your point about past endogamy and recent "sellout" behavior among AAs, but intermarriage was frowned upon in general in the past. Today it is frowned upon mainly by people who think of it as selling out.

Finally, Village, I didn't accuse AMs of "whining." I never even denied the legitimacy of their frustrations. But I don't see the validity of the frequent contention that AF perceptions of AMs are the result of rare but disparaging images of AMs in the media.

I can say that that is true. I think some, if not most, Filipinos are open to out-marrying. Of course, some of the "older-generation" Filipinos would not want their sons or daughters to do that, but if the son/daughter will still continue, they would hope that the partner would be of the same religion or that he/she is not divorced, etc.

is this roger guy for real or some wino bent on stirring trouble?

the 2% perhaps he didn't get is only DOCUMENTED cases in most likelihood. most girls in america have eating disorders and disguise them without ever getting to the clinically critical stages to be included in that 2% figure. similarily, i know somebody else will straighten him out about media biases and perceptions. the analogy in the asian community is akin to the black community with the kinky hair or "the bluest eye" and has well been addressed by sociologists.

let me ask the reverse, if media doesn't matter then why do japanese and other westernized asian countries have the extreme need to appear white? japanese teenagers dye their hair light and put on blue contacts and even some choose to have eye surgery to "get rid" of the monolid/epicanthic. now they're in an asian country so they're exposed to asians and have "asian standards" of beauty by your arguement right? so why the need to appear white then if media influence doesn't operate?

the media does not cause people to behave in certain ways, but is rather the reflection of elements of the society. media archetypes reflect trends of the social fabric. why has the asian community in america been intro-gamous and self-perpetuating for nearly 150 years without the recent "sellout" phenomena after all the wars in asia and the war brides? you tell me this is not a documented fact of american society. it is well known minorities are enculturated into the dominant society.

even i think it's great others are learning about the asian culture, at least get your facts straight before pointing fingers how we AM are whining and don't got game.

sincerely and unapologetically,

DC White Dude,

Sociological studies of Filopino, have shown they are the most likely to marry out among Asians in the USA.

I know a family with 3 brothers. They all married the girl next door type irish - italian. Blond, Blue-eyes. At their wedding I saw there cousin. I was shocked that they too all married the American girl next door type.

So just based on my personal experience is Filopino just love the Blonds.

Roger:
"I asked how could it be that infrequent images of AMs in the media could have a greater influence in shaping the AF perceptions of AM than real life contact has...?"

THANK GOD YOU CAME ALONG WHEN YA DID!!!
I was about to think that I was the only one who could actually turn off the TV & turn on my brain! The media gets blamed for everything. From something stupid like kids hurting themselves after watching Beavis & Butt-Head (who I miss everyday to something as tragic as Columbine. People need to start learning to operate on their own rather than using the boob-tube as their battery. I blame TV for nothing.

Modern AA Male Perspective:
You just uncovered the mystery, my sweet. It's not about general non-Asian women wanting AMs, it about WHITE WOMEN wanting AMs. I don't give a rat's fat ass about AM/WF relationships 'cause I'm neither. Go for it! The thing is, if you're gonna complain about not enough light getting through the door, open the door wider. Can ya dig it, sucka (sorry, too much WWF Smackdown *_*)?

Modern AA Male Perspective,

"The fact of the matter is that race is just one component of our being. We as individuals are so much more than just our race."

That was beautifully said! Allowing skin color to be a qualifier in determining the value of another race, or person, isn't right. Neither is it productive. Our world is too diverse, so let us revel in that diversity. Thank you:)
