IS THE AA GENDER DIVIDE REAL?
(Updated Wednesday, Jan 22, 2025, 06:38:55 AM)

sian American women are abandoning AA men by the millions. Young AA women seek out any race of men but their own. Women like Amy Tan write books and make movies that dump on AA men and glorify Asian women in relationships with white men.
That's the perception of many AA men.
On what do they blame this state of affairs? Brainwashing by media that play up white men while cutting Asian men off at the knees. Desire for payback by AA women who feel slighted by their families and Asian society. Large numbers of non-Asian men with blind fetishes for Asian women. Some even acknowledge that Asian men are often too fixed in their ideas of how a woman should look and behave, causing many AF to feel devalued.
Other Asian Americans see AF outmarriage rates as merely a natural state of affairs for a 4% minority population that includes many recent immigrants. The outmarriage gender gap will narrow as growing Asian population centers provide ready access to bigger pools of singles. Besides outmarriage is't the same as rejecting one's racial identity, they argue. Many AF who outmarry retain strong identification with their Asian identity.
Is there really an Asian American gender divide? Is so, what's behind it? If not, what's behind the perception?

WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
To Miscegination is Great,

I don't agree with you about how you say the media promote "negative news slant" regarding China as a military threat and Japan as an economic competitor. Are you saying this is racist on the part of the media? I don't think so.

During the Cold War (1945-1991), Russia was excoriated as "The Evil Empire" and people were scared to death by the media over the supposedly diabolical "Russian Bear" -- and Russia is full of blue-eyed white people, along with most of its former "evil" allies in Eastern Europe. All white people.

Similarly, Germany during the First and Second World Wars.

Likewise, Western Europe is also painted as an economic competitor to the USA, like Japan, and has been for many decades.

And when it comes to painting whole groups of people as a mass threat, nothing beats the media's portrayal of Arabs.

I don't think there's any conscious bias in the media against East Asians...

What about bias in the Chinese media towards your "typical" white Americans?

Supposedly (according to the Drudge Report and various papers) after 9/11, the Chinese GOVERNMENT produced a half hour propaganda video showing your "typical" white and black Americans screaming and running away from the falling WTC buildings, mocking the "arrogance" of Americans and calling us a "paper tiger", which deserved to be humiliated. This isn't private commercial media in China, this is the Chinese GOVERNMENT, producing a hateful video and then selling it on the open market commercially.

Isn't this an attitude the average American, be he white, black, Hispanic, or Asian, should be alarmed about?

Isn't this a reason to dislike the Chinese government and view them as hostile liars?

With all of these complaints about the media, why are there not more Asian actors and Asians in other facets of the entertainment industry trying to make a difference? Obviously it's a harder battle for us to fight. But it definately does no good to simply complain and not take some sort of stand. There must be some way as a race to rise above this. Blacks have been fighting this battle for years and now it's time for us to step up to the plate. For god sakes, we're much too intelligent, dignified and resourceful of a race to just simply sit back and watch the media rip us to shreds! Boycotting is not an answer by the way. Unless you don't enjoy tv, movies, radio, books, newspapers, magazines, concerts, etc.
Let's kick some ass!!

>i think this roger guy doesn't get out
>much, or else he's in denial.

I think "Roger"'s attitude is that of a typical white guy.

It is difficult to believe that any AA would have difficulty understanding the effect of the media. But invariably, it is difficult to discuss racism with whites because they think there is little to none. The inherent bias of society toward the majority is invisible to the majority. So you have to spell things out very clearly to people like "Roger" because they have difficulty comprehending what it is like. Too bad we can't have everyone go into a machine and change them into a different racial appearance (like Dr. Seuss' sneetches), just to give these people a different POV.

"For the final time, how can that be when AFs typically have extensive contact with AMs, and images of AMs in the media -- disparaging, flattering, or neutral -- are uncommon?"

Two assertions made by "Roger", neither are true. In the US, many AAs grow up in majority white neighborhoods. Their friends are all white. The only AA people they see on a regular basis is their own family, which is typically not large. In many areas of the country, Asians are less than 5% of the population. In my city, the Asian population is 1% of the population. Where I grew up I was one of 5 Asian kids in my entire high school of over 1000. All the people I hung out with were white. OK? So when you say AAs typically have extensive contact with other AAs, it is not true. I certainly did not.

The second point: media portrayals are not necessarily few, and usually are negative, even if subtle. These images are cumulative. How many hours do you spend watching TV, movies, listening to radio, surfing the web?

Examples:
1. Commercials making fun of Asians; e.g. "Wassup!" "Wasabi!"; USA channel's "Banzai Movie" where announcer talk in fake Japanese accent

2. Consistently negative news slant on China (potential military threat), Japan (economic competitor). The tone of mass media during the spy plane incident and the Wen Ho Lee affair is pretty typical, and frightening.

3. Exclusion of Asian males from leading man role, replaced by white male: e.g. Bruce Lee's idea for "Kung Fu", played by white actor in yellowface. Or, more recently the "Monkey King" series on NBC, a classic Chinese story where Russell Wong is demoted to the sidekick for the lead character who is, of course, a white male and of course, the white male gets the AF.

4. Stereotypical depiction of Asians in movies: Much has been written about this elsewhere. Long Duc Dong in Sixteen Candles, Joy Crap Club, etc. I hope I don't have to go through all that shit. But "Roger", riddle me this: find a movie where an Asian male kisses a white female onscreen. Then compare that to the number of movies where a white male kisses an AF. What do you think that ratio is? What effect does that have on children? Do you think kids aren't influenced when they see this kind of stuff? Why do kids badger their parents for Nikes and designer clothes? You think MTV doesn't influence the way teens talk, dress and purchase goods?

Roger, either you are not very bright, or you have very little insight. I leave it to you to decide where your deficiencies lie.
