ASIAN FILMS & HOLLYWOOD'S ASIAN IMAGES
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 06:02:52 PM)

rouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, with its modest budget and phenomenal legs, was the past year's most profitable Hollywood release. It showcased the talents of multiple-Oscal-winning director Ang Lee and charismatic Hong Kong action star Chow Yun-Fat who had also co-starred in the lavish Anna and the King. Action director John Woo has helmed a half-dozen big-budget movies emblazoned with Hollywood's brightest names. Jackie Chan and Jet Li have each starred in a couple of Hollywood vehicles. The past five years has seen a virtual tidal wave of Asian talent washing into Hollywood.
But some Asian Americans question whether the individual contributions of imported Asian talent, no matter how visible, have really changed the way Asians are portrayed by Hollywood and the way we are seen on Main Street. Others do see a shift, albeit subtle, and expect more to come.
How do you see the effect that imported Asian talent has had on the images we Asian Americans must live with day in and day out?

The Hero. Oh boy, another Asian kung fu flick! What a break through! I hope we get to see Asians fly!

mbutterfly,

Ai diu! Darn it...
That true? I hope it does not get imported to america... cause the girls are taller than the guys.I think I know why. Zhang Ziyi was a ballet dancer and actress with no kung fu experience. Maggie Cheung doesn't do kung fu either, and stands at 5'7.
OH Well...All the movies that get imported to america are so offensive to me(if stereotyping maniacs see it)

Check Out a new star-studded martial arts flick The Hero starring Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Tony Leung Chiu Wa, and Maggie Cheung. It might be the "next" Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I do see a change for the better. It is a gradual process, but it is changing. Not only have martial-arts actioners become a part of the main-stream (no longer "cult" movies), but dramatic roles, such as "The Joy Luck Club" & the recent (albeit cancelled) Margret Cho sitcom are being shown. I recently saw a movie on Lifetime that had Soon-Tek Oh in a supporting role of a land-owner who helps a down on their luck family because he himself is a lonely man without a family. (The character he played was a man who anyone could identify with. Not a stereo-typical role!)

We still have a ways to go, but to say that things are not changing or that they were as bad as they were forty years ago is extreme. We still have to fight to continue the change (and it helps if we not only write & produce, but support Asian-themed shows), but things are changing!

Hey ever checked out avenging fist? It's a hong kong action movie that has special effects.

It has kung fu for racist caucasian people, special effects for geeks, Lee Hom Wang for the ladies to enjoy*5'11 leng jai*Plus funny future things like the jetsons for the children.lol
It's a good movie though.I think it will be a sucess if it was imported into america, it wont be to boring for the american caucasian people, since they always associate us with kung fu, but has popsingers and stuff to replace kung fu masters.

American media is brainwashing all american and canadian peoples by giving bad images of ethnic people.
Almost all movies that they import from china are kung fu flicks. Now I understand that caucasians wont watch it if it's not a kungfu flick, but at least show like... the legend of zu, which has special effects and non kung fu people, which haven't stunted their growth from kung fu training.I'm sure american people will enjoy la brassiere, a hk comedy with gigi leung at 5'10, carina lau at 5'7, louis koo at 5'11, lau ching wan at 6'0.All tall people ya see!Even the extra's are like skyscrapers!Plus they arent as stocky as the muscular and short kung fu men and women. It's gonna take a long time until they show chinese comedies in american cinema's, but the time will come, and all those stereotypes about chinese being short and thick necked will be changed when no kung fu people will appear on american media.(I guess the best things are saved in china, and not exported out)

FatWhiteguy, don't be fooled by Hollywood propaganda. Films that depict Chinese people as being able to fly are produced to make White people feel inadequate. Most Chinese people can't fly.

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

Toi San Jai,

Uh...okay....and Mobster films are great for Italian American image.

I like it when people (especially the cops) automatically assume I know every Asian Young Gang member and Tong head in NYC, and know what their doing. That I will send the '4444' into a pager as the sign of the hit, if you screw with me. Yeah...okay.

Go run with an Asian Youth gang for a few months the allure of doing a 'hit' will fade fast. Or standing as look out at a gambling den or whore house, will somehow be elevate asian status in the USA.

Okay Toi San Joi, in simple terms Asian being associated with organized crime will not help us.
