ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
JAPAN'S IMPACT ON THE ASIAN IMAGE
t has long been seen as the fountainhead of consumer electronics technology. Its cars are consistently among the world's most admired. Its corporations own two major Hollywood studios. Its kiddie culture has all but killed off Mickey Mouse and Barbie. Its $4 trillion GDP is number two behind the U.S. and its workers earn 25% more per head than Americans.

Bravo Castrati!

That's how many Asian Americans see Japan. A nation that should command the stature of a powerhouse -- and elevate the image of all Asians in the process -- possesses the geopolitical profile of, say, Switzerland, a nation a thirtieth its size. Japan's leaders are seen as mere hand puppets in a sad half-century charade of democracy. Its homes are cramped. Its men function as soulless drones whose women fly into the arms of western males. Even its vaunted economy has been on the ropes for ten years and looks ready to go down for the count. What little testosterone it possessed seems to have left with Ichiro.

A nation that should champion the Asian image has only reinforced every insulting stereotype. To many Asian Americans, Japan has done less than its smaller, poorer neightbors. Little Hong Kong exports asskicking action stars. South Corea exports people who take hooey from no one. Taiwan exports tech entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley. Impoverished China, Vietnam and even nutcase North Corea showed balls in standing up to the west. But mighty Japan? Spiritually it seems never to have recovered from its defeat in World War II.

Is Japan carrying its weight or slacking in the Asian image department?

kimchi devil,
I guess it all depends if you believe the world will be better off as a monopole, dipole, or multipole world.
I think multipolar is best on a global scale, because it is a form of pluralism for the world community.
I believe a monopolar world is not indicative to uplifting the human race. For ultimately humans nature is to excel when there is a competition for resources.
One can see some of our greatest technological breakthrough came from extreme form of competitions and conflicts.

Have you cracked a cell phone open to see what's inside, Cell phones & Laptops rely heavily on highly integrated ICs and miniature components. And I haven't heard of Nokia manufacturing ICs of any sort, unlike say Motorola. It may be suprising to find out how japanese or asian Nokias may be. I'm positive at the very least, the LCDs are made in Asia, which is usually a considerable part of the cost.
Eminiminem? Uh, no comment. I guess he's all legit workin' for Dr. Dre, bwahahahaha. Oh, please don't beat me up, Dr. Sir. hahaha.
"Who in America isn't an immigrant?"... uh, um, uh, hmmmm, uh, well, i don't know, uh, indians? wow, they really had it good, didn't they?
"What kind of race is a "North American" anyways?"... Well according to many whites, the answer would be white, since anything else doesn't "belong" in America, including native americans.
"Your comment is a bit racist?" Ouch, that must really really hurt, boo hoo. sniff sniff : ( I guess it feels like the alamo doesn't it? With one little asian, one itty bitty asian, makes ur knees tremble, doesn't it? I'm suprised anything a "third world nonhuman" could say would hurt your feelings. Anyho, I didn't see or hear anything "rashist", I don't know what ur talking about.
"So, why did all these 'innovative' immigrants come here in the first place?"... Because we want to "help" you, muh hahahahahahahaha. We really do. You know, to "help" you, because the United States has been sooooo "helpful" to 'us'. Wussamata, You don't appreciate our "help?"
Of course America's idea of "helping" other countries has been to invite themselves to war and to kill people in the very lands they were born in, along with the plantlife too (agent orange, anyone?). And even considered nuking their country to "help" them. (vietnam/korea?) Go "help" yourselves instead.
And a mixture of all races from around the world?... I bet that's awfully depressing for "true americans," huh? You know, not the fake ones, like, uh, hmmm, uh, mmmm, indians?!? Come to think of it, native americans don't seem to have as much of an issue with foreigners and immigrants as whites do? Kinda odd, don't you think? And don't forget, racism doesn't 'count' when it's perpetrated against asians, hispanics, native americans, or anything but the most obvious. White americans, in general, don't care about right or wrong, with regard to people of other races, just what they can get away with. After all, it's worked out soooo well for y'all so far. Naaaaaaw, whites back in the day never considered anything they did rashist, even when it was obvious. Otherwise they would have done something about it, right? Nope, no rashism here, nope, no sirry.
Looks like some folks are returning the favor to whites in prison, LoL. Explain it to them... looks like they could use your precious advice. And when are they gonna integrate white-collar prisons with the garden-variety ones? You know, integration, like the public schools. muh hahahahahaha.

"Too bad kids now have Eminem and trash talking athletes as their role models rather than real outstanding citizens (i.e. police, teachers). I guess it's cool to be dumb."
Dude, DO NOT EVEN bash Eminem now. That man is an absolute genius! Have you listened to his new album? It's a masterpiece!
"Japan has cell phones that can do anything now. Ours can barely get good reception."
Yeah, but those phones ARE NOT made in Japan. Nokia is the premier phone company in the world. We went over this already.
"It's kind of sad that North America has to rely on imports (immigrants) to stay intellectually competitive with Asia and Europe."
Who in America isn't an immigrant? Wasn't this country founded on giving immigrants a chance to prove themselves? Your comment is a bit racist. What kind of race is a "North American" anyways? It is a mixture of all races from around the world. So, why did all these "innovative" immigrants come here in the first place? Because they couldn't do what they are doing here back home.

And another thing, despite the high marks in math/science, corean classes tend to be rather large, without the kind of funding given to them as the japanese and western counterparts. This would be a plus for a society that lacked the kind of innovation seen in the west, with some exceptions (the turtle ships being one of my favs). Innovation today is not simply stumbling across things as had happened in the past... It is a combination of imagination tempered with technical know-how. As corean and japanese children are exposed to different ideas, the innovation will follow. And toys/games for little kids helps too, in getting them off to a good start. But a society with too many inventive types will also have some unwanted side effects, me thinks.

AC Dropout,
I think it's rather sickening given the thought that there are numerous US corporations that are richer than many 3rd world nations on this planet (in terms of GDP, but likely assets too). I'm no longer sure what it is america offers to justify the kind of wealth concentrated here. Maybe just the old saying, "The rich get richer...". China & East Asia had best be cautious as hell in dealing with America and Europe (to a much, much lesser degree). The game's over for much of the rest of the world. And it wouldn't suprise me if the G7 and the rest of its ilk are nothing more than an old boys club, with the asian guy (japan) pushed to the corner and ignored in everyday activities that no-one sees, but publicly "included". Something we see often as asians in america?
It would be wise for china/russia/india/japan/korea (asia) to strengthen ties to counteract this kind of influence which feeds american wealth. Unless you want asia to become another S. America, Africa, and the Middle-East (a source for raw resources and not much else). Saddening indeed to see sooo much human potential gone to waste.
On a side note: In india, there are those lousy 'employers' who "keep" their employees as servants because they rent the tools for the workers to use while working for their 'employers'. The 'employee' is and becomes forever in debt to their 'employer'. A servant or slave? Naaaaw, free market, dude. Nevermind if the rent exceeds the pay, it's just a minor 'detail'. Clearly an exception rather than the rule, but it spells it out rather bluntly what Asia is gonna face with America. As it is the last one left standing.
The rich get richer, indeed.
