JAPAN'S IMPACT ON THE ASIAN IMAGE

t has long been seen as the fountainhead of consumer electronics technology. Its cars are consistently among the world's most admired. Its corporations own two major Hollywood studios. Its kiddie culture has all but killed off Mickey Mouse and Barbie. Its $4 trillion GDP is number two behind the U.S. and its workers earn 25% more per head than Americans.
     Bravo Castrati!
That's how many Asian Americans see Japan. A nation that should command the stature of a powerhouse -- and elevate the image of all Asians in the process -- possesses the geopolitical profile of, say, Switzerland, a nation a thirtieth its size. Japan's leaders are seen as mere hand puppets in a sad half-century charade of democracy. Its homes are cramped. Its men function as soulless drones whose women fly into the arms of western males. Even its vaunted economy has been on the ropes for ten years and looks ready to go down for the count. What little testosterone it possessed seems to have left with Ichiro.
A nation that should champion the Asian image has only reinforced every insulting stereotype. To many Asian Americans, Japan has done less than its smaller, poorer neightbors. Little Hong Kong exports asskicking action stars. South Corea exports people who take hooey from no one. Taiwan exports tech entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley. Impoverished China, Vietnam and even nutcase North Corea showed balls in standing up to the west. But mighty Japan? Spiritually it seems never to have recovered from its defeat in World War II.
Is Japan carrying its weight or slacking in the Asian image department?

To Whom It May Concern

Japanese have contributed more for the Asian cause in this century and the last than all other Asians combined.

When rest of the Asia was in caves, we were kicking butt and getting respect from the whities.

Right now Japan is just on a well earned down rest cycle, in good time it'll come back and kick major butt again, then dont cry. It has huge amount of reserve power left.

- Sellout -

This is such a ignorant word. Who and what are we selling out? The rest of Asia should repect and appreciate Japan for all it has done and pioneering the way to all the riches. BTW its no ones business what we do with our money.

Hey, you don't have to believe me. All I know is that In-N-Out want ads say they make a minimum of $9.25 an hour, and that's with zero experience. The managers do make 100 g's a year. They are all owned by In-N-Out, so they are not franchises. The manager does not have to put in a dime of his own money.

"but by no means is it a lucrative living."

Looks likes your claims are pretty "ludicrous" themselves.

Japan may seem like a sellout (politically speaking, maybe sort of culturally too), but you have to look at it from different angles.

On the world stage, Japan might be America's bitch (so is Taiwan and to a lesser degree Corea). But they all prove that Asians can play the game, and we can win (on a economic level). America may be able to bomb the crap out of anyone, but if one of Asia's powerhouses goes down (literally collapses), especially Japan, they're taking the U.S. with them.

"Look at the burger joints that got it right. In-N-Out pays their workers 10+ an hour, and the managers make, get this... 90 to 100 g's a year! That's more than most people in professional jobs make."

That's bull to me. Please back up your ridiculous claims. It is generally known that burger joints are minimum wage jobs. McDonalds being the biggest burger chain, does not have managers who make "90 to 100 g's a year." In-N-Out may pay higher than minimum wage, but by no means is it a ludrative living. Whatever point you were trying to make makes no sense with your outrageous comparison.

TSJ,

Having looking into the franchises as investments. The kids make minimium wage. And the manager (aka the owner) better be making six figures or more, since the out lay is usually 2 mil for one of the top two burger franchises.

Japan in my opinion is a sellout. The only people with pride for japan are the asian wannabes.

"Looks to me like all them immigrants in America's colleges are the only thing keeping many Americans flipping burgers instead of flipping sticks or whatever. But flipping burgers pays infinitely more, doesn't it?"

Why must you always associate "American" with white? I don't care what people "perceive" America to be. The bottom line is that we are all citizens, and that's all that matters. (Legal) Immigrants are Americans too.

Look at the burger joints that got it right. In-N-Out pays their workers 10+ an hour, and the managers make, get this... 90 to 100 g's a year! That's more than most people in professional jobs make.

TSJ,

My point is why should there be "some poor kids in the Saharan desert who are playing games with sticks in the sand" or "folks up in the Himalayas that have to walk miles to the well" when americans can do that just as well. bwarhahahahahaha. Honestly, I'd love to see that happen. Looks to me like all them immigrants in America's colleges are the only thing keeping many Americans flipping burgers instead of flipping sticks or whatever. But flipping burgers pays infinitely more, doesn't it? Takes a LOT more skill workin' at maacdognalds for 5 dolla an hour than puttin' together sneakers for 5 dolla a year, huh? YOUR corporations making that happen? America benefits from it, does it not? (i.e. gets stinkin' rich off of it).

Entropy appears to be on America's side, no? For now...

Oh, how I long for the day, when americano sweat shops with people makin' pennies a day, cranking out useless junk nobody wants, just so some east asian company can slap its name on it and sell it for a premium. Then some guy over 'there' can complain about it all on his compooter while nobody hears what anyone in the US has to say. Yeah baby!! Rock on.
