Japan's Impact on the Asian Image

t has long been seen as the fountainhead of consumer electronics technology. Its cars are consistently among the world's most admired. Its corporations own two major Hollywood studios. Its kiddie culture has all but killed off Mickey Mouse and Barbie. Its $4 trillion GDP is number two behind the U.S. and its workers earn 25% more per head than Americans.
     Bravo Castrati!
That's how many Asian Americans see Japan. A nation that should command the stature of a powerhouse -- and elevate the image of all Asians in the process -- possesses the geopolitical profile of, say, Switzerland, a nation a thirtieth its size. Japan's leaders are seen as mere hand puppets in a sad half-century charade of democracy. Its homes are cramped. Its men function as soulless drones whose women fly into the arms of western males. Even its vaunted economy has been on the ropes for ten years and looks ready to go down for the count. What little testosterone it possessed seems to have left with Ichiro.
A nation that should champion the Asian image has only reinforced every insulting stereotype. To many Asian Americans, Japan has done less than its smaller, poorer neightbors. Little Hong Kong exports asskicking action stars. South Corea exports people who take hooey from no one. Taiwan exports tech entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley. Impoverished China, Vietnam and even nutcase North Corea showed balls in standing up to the west. But mighty Japan? Spiritually it seems never to have recovered from its defeat in World War II.
Is Japan carrying its weight or slacking in the Asian image department?

You're one DISTURBED anti USA North Corean commie maggot. Do you live in the US or are you typing aaway from North Corea? say hello to your troll doll of a leader.

You babbled:
"or more precisely... who helped destroy their economies. WWII and Corean War ring a bell?"
Japan destroyed its own econonmy when they picked a fight with the US whcih they couldn't win. Corean economy was in shambbles due to Japanese invasion for decades, you illiterate. After the WW2 US helped Japan and rest of the idustrialized world build its economy.
Last time I checked US troops are in south Corea and Japan because they were asked to, unless you know something I don't, commie.
One thing I do agree with you, US should have never defended those Arabs from Hussein. Those Arabs are bunch of ungrateful hypocrites defending Hussin even after US saved their butts from Hussin. Some even try justifying the attacks on 9-11 like you coward.

Aurelius,
Japanese 50 years ago is different from the Japanese of today.
When you're country is in danger of occupation (yes, they did start the war), do you think they'll role over and die? You fight until you can't fight anymore.

The world thinks the U.S. is weak becaues that's what happens when Democrats are in power. The only they know how to conquer is women (JFK, Clinton). If the Democrats were in power on 9/11, they'd probably apologize for building the WTC too high.

Knowing you'll lose atleast 500,000 troops in an invasion is force enough to use the A-bomb.

If they had the bomb before Berlin fell, they'd probably would've dropped it then too.

Sisi and the rest,
Is it the youth that hate, or is their parents teaching them to hate the Japanese?

Eventhough they fought a war, only the Corean gov'ts hate one another. The people don't.

Kimchi,
W/o the U.S., Europe would be in shambles because they'd be the next target for Muslim jealousy. Only Japan and Europe depend on their oil. Also, Russia and China would be blowing each other to smithereens with no country capable of stepping in and kicking both their asses.
China and the rest of the world were awful quiet each time India/Pakistan faced off. In the end, America had to step in and iron things out.

Granted they're not perfect but it's
kind of funny how everyone hates the country that keeps the rest of the world from killing itself.

counter muncher,

>>"Who help build up the economies of South Corea and Japan?"

or more precisely... who helped destroy their economies. WWII and Corean War ring a bell?

>>"With commie North Corea and China next door South Corea and Japan need a counter balance."

tell that to thailand and russia, and any other neighboring countries.

Half of America's oil from Alaska, huh? The last I checked the US only produces 30% of its oil domestically (total), do you really think the previous war with Iraq would've been worthwhile if it got sooo little from the middle east? Humanitarian reasons my ass. Weapons of mass destruction blah blah blah. Man, you're the one buying into this propaganda PR machine of the US gov't. And regarding oil/gas/whatever from Russia and Venezuala... Looks like good oil sources for corea and japan to me, as well as from Iraq and anyone else. So what's the difference between kuwaiti oil sold by kuwait or iraq. machts nichts. YOU would pro'bly think the oil was somehow different, corrupted and unusable given the fact that you eat up EVERYTHING the US gov't says. Funny how these Americans turn each and every freaking NON-ISSUE into another goddamn reason why people "owe" America something. What next? You want me to owe America something the next time I flush the toilet or put my hand in my pockets? GET OVER IT.

happy on 9/11? not exactly, maybe on 9/12. LoL. Anyho, not my battle. When the freight train commeth, one can either step on the tracks or step off of them. I'd say 9/11 resulted because of the incompetence of America's airline security, which Americans seem to have problems fessing up to. Got 0Wn3d by a measly 19 men? What a joke.

And why shouldn't I be upset at US troops stationed in Corea? With their bullsh*t SOFA agreement granting their jeffrey dahmer arses "diplomatic" immunity when they commit crimes, and heinous ones to boot. But YOU pro'bly believe Americans are more just and fair, while others are incapable, when in fact they're NO f****** different from those they point their fingers at. Better get a fresh coat of paint on that American image of yours, 'cause it looks like the crap underneath is beginning to show. heheh.

Besides it's been 50 goddamn years, so just how long does the US plan to hold something against japan for WWII. sounds like a rotten deal to me, and just an excuse for the US mettle in asian affairs. The cold war is over, and it's time the US left japan the hell alone.

Maybe it's you who's living in the past. ta ta.

You're one of those mislead brainwashed Corean students who's always protesting American presence, right? Why don't the Coreans kick the US out? Same reason why Japan doesn't because our economic and military life line depends on USA.
Who help build up the economies of South Corea and Japan?
With commie North Corea and China next door South Corea and Japan need a counter balance. USA isn't depended on middle east oil like the rest of the industrialized world, we get half of our oil from Alaska dork and we can easily tap into Russia and Venezula if necessary. I guess you were happy on 9-11 huh? You little pathetic byunshin.

It`s a total shame to read all this.
I`m not Asian but I`m married with one.In fact the father of my only daughter was from Taiwan and died in car accident while I was pregnant, for some reasons I can`t explain I met the person who is my husband today. He`s from Tokyo Japan and when we met I told him the truth about the baby, something that didn`t matter to him for marrying and honor me as woman.

I don`t know why some people feel this incredible "hate" for the Japanese people even today...that`s ridiculous!!

Look, I know what Japan did to all those neighbor countries and I know all the suffering and pain they probably felt back then...I still remember how much the real father of my girl tought me and educated me about Chinese/Taiwanese history in every aspect even on war with Japan.

I am sorry for what happend and there`s no way to erase the scars but please no more!!!!! No more hate and racism against this people!

I know what it feels in my own skin the pain that is to be banned from a group of friends when someone starts talking about WW2 and the Japanese slaughtering millions of Chinese innocent civilians and you just kept silent becuz you know its true!

My husband recognized what happend in history but we are both agreed to go on and try to build decent and moral lives with my daughter and our new baby now....

As mother of a half Taiwanese/Latino child I feel completely hurt with all this....it hurts to know that there is no forgiveness and yet still some people still hating others for what they`ve done years ago...

I am not against Chinese, koreans or any other race scarred and marked by Japanese in WW2, but I am with everybody, and I love them very much, very very much and I`m so proud everytime I look into my daughter`s eyes and feel how lucky I am.....Love is everything!!!
Believe me.......

I wish the Japanese would show some balls and kick the US out. America's presence in the far east has long worn out its welcome. Hopefully this Iraq fiasco will bring people to their senses as to what the United States is all about, and start cutting ties with it altogether. With the US's oil supply chopped off, it'll just shrivel up like a cockroach that's been sprayed with a little too much raid, hehe. I guarantee that the US will be NO different than a Nazi Germany with nukes when that happens.

Have the Japanese no pride? or just a goddamn welcome mat for US "interests" in Asia? good grief.

huu 76. You must not know what happened in WWII if you actually believe Japan fought the United States to a standstill. Yes, they fought hard but it did not get them anywhere. Just because Japanese used kamakaze bombers and fought from holes in the ground and caves does not mean they fought the U.S. to a standstill. Japan, like many enemies of the U.S. before and after (radical Muslims, Iraq) thought or presently still think America is weak and decadent. Japan cunningly attacked the United States without a warning and on a Sunday, the Sabbath for Christians! The U.S. was not forced to use the Atomic Bomb but rather Japan chose its own destruction because they did not know when they were beaten (after the U.S. taking of Okinawa). Japan was tought a lesson by God via the United States. You should read the book "The Rape of Nanking." After Nanking, the Japanese people had the wrath of God upon them. It was destiny that a nation devoted to that level of evil would not win.

sisi,

you're right. Japanese culture becomes more and more reduced and superficial from generation to generation. Many people don't know that Japan could once have been culturally nearly as rich as Papua New Guinea. Originally different languages were spoken there. But what Japanese Americans know about Japanese culture is maybe just that it is "Japanese" to become assimilated.

I definately think Japan is in a tenous position as the forerunner in the "Asian image". Not only did Japan screw over all her neighbors in World War II and refuse to educate its youth about war atrocities, but they are currently breeding a culture that is on the one hand "cool" and "cute" but on the other hand, perverse and oppressed.
Furthermore, while Hong Kong and Seoul's culture is heavily influenced by Japanese pop-culture, there is a historical rift between the countries. Deep down, Koreans and Chinese have historically resented the Japanese for what they have done in the past and what they refuse to acknowledge now.

It doesn't really matter which Asian nation is dominant in what. Asians can claim the benefits of each one just like we'd suffer the slings of the rest.

If, say, China kicked America's ass. We'd get harassed over here, but we could also take pride in being a part of a nation that was able to make whites say "That wasn't supposed to happen". Look at Japan. Sneak attacks isn't something I endorse, but who fought America to a standstill and forced them to use the A-bomb?

When Japan employs Americans in the auto industry (just one example), we'd get heat for not buying American, but we can say "Who's employing Americans now and who'd shutting down their U.S. plants?"

Knocking Asians just because they're called Corean instead of Japanese etc. is kind of pointless. We get lumped together by outsiders anyway.
