ANTAGONIZING CHINA OVER NMD
(New 6/20/01.)

lobal peace and prosperity depends to a remarkable degree on robust exchanges between the world's richest nation and the world's most populous. Considering that fact, the leaders in Washinton D.C. and Beijing have been either tragically star-crossed or remarkably cavalier about provoking confrontation.
In 1996 Beijing fired a pair of ballistic missiles across the Taiwan Strait under the pretext of "military exercises", prompting the U.S. to send a carrier battle group in response. In 1999 the U.S. bombed the Chinese embassy in Kosovo and ascribed it to an intelligence error.
In mid 2000 the two nations seemed about to put the bad blood behind them when President Clinton struck a deal for U.S. approval of China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Then George Bush vowed to commit untold billions to building a space-based national missile defense (NMD) system to detect and destroy ballistic missiles that might threaten the U.S. A clear effort at upsetting the global balance of power, charged Beijing, vowing to commit whatever resources necessary to counter NMD. Its predictably harsh and intransigent stance toward a crippled U.S. spy plane forced to land on Hainan Island produced another standoff which, for several tense days, seemed capable of triggering a shooting war.
What American wouldn't want a shield from foreign ballistic missiles? But the NMD is hardly a sure thing. It's premised on technology that won't exist for a decade or more. It will end up costing well over $100 billion dollars. Meanwhile its mere existence on drawing boards sours relations with China, Russia and other nations. At present all it guarantees is another arms race. The only way it makes strategic sense is as a means to bankrupt a nascent geopolitical rival by forcing it into an arms race it can't afford. Look at what the nuclear arms race did to Russia.
Does the U.S. stand to gain or lose by using the NMD to threaten and alienate China?

WHAT YOU SAY

Bringittogerher,

Your arguement is so weak that it doesn't even stand up to a breeze. The war on terrorism is difficult to fight due to an inablity to pin blame on a specific state government. But India has made the bold claim that the government of Pakistan is directly behind the terrorist attacks that have happened in India. If that is what you Indians truly believe then that is not terrorism but an act of war by an established nation. If this is really the case then India doing exactly as Dingo said....nothing. There are only a few possible explanations for this. One India is all talk no action. Two India is well aware of its own military limitations if engaged in a protracted war with Pakistan. Three the actual terrorist attacks are being carrie dout by an indigenous resisitance movement that operates independent of Pakistan. If you go to the CIA website you will find a list of no less then 150 seperate resistance meovements inside India of which only 30 are Islamic in nature.
Ultimately what India wants is a Pakistan that is subordinate to India's will like all of the other nations surrounding her. Unfortunately that will never happen. This is why the conflcit in that part of the world will never be resolved.

If you want to study militancy take a good look at your BJP government. I guess Doctors Without Borders and Amnesty International are all in league with the Muslims terrorists because they sight the Indians with numerous human rights violations. It must be nice to have a such a simple mind thats just an echo-chamber of extremist dogma. I know how the mind of an extremist works and it works a lot like yours.

Pakistan had already entered the war against the Soviet Union prior to U.S. involvement. Please read up on history before you post moron.

AC...say what you just said in simple words...and if you're talking to me about Pakistan or Palestine...tell me IN THE END...what is their goal...what the hell do they want...cause' they aren't going to get Kashmir...so you and everyone else can keep crying human rights...and we will keep beating the terrorists down as they come across the line. India is a country that non-violently protested it's independence, so don't talk to me about who's a terrorist and who's not and what they can do to fight for freedom. It was the Hindu Gandhi...NOT Muslim which got India independence (and even before 1947...India was a Hindu majority country...it's our land)...ok...so let's stick to the facts...and facts are they got their own bleeping country...actually two of them out of our bleeping land. WE DON'T HAVE TO GIVE THEM ANYTHING ANYMORE. NEVER. They got their own Muslim countries and not only that...120 million Muslims still live in India making it the second largest Muslim country in the world, so STOP asking India to continuing shedding it's own land for other religions. We have given enough to those people. They don't need anymore. If I were Israel, I would pull back to the 67' line and form the P-State and if even one of them guys tried to come over that fence they're building I would arrest him and if he tried anything stupid I would shoot him. And for your info Harry S. Truman is the biggest son of bitchin' terrorist ever...dropped nuclear bombs on Japan and killed 150,000 innocent people. And President Bush has the audacity to call us civilized? I don't think so...USA kills just as much as anyone else does.

bringittogether,

That the dumbest thing I ever heard. For a society to function it needs people of all desires. Some wish to kill. Some wish to steal. Some wish to add knowledge. Based on your reasoning it would mean no one in Pakistan is interested in farming and husbandry to feed their own people.

Without the islamic world we would not have the knowledge in math and sciences they preserved as traders with asia and creators of the first university system.

I'm getting jaded with this terrorist label. Nelson Mendella is a terrorist. The American revolution were terrorist. The IRA are terrorist. The hippies of the 60's are terrorist. Isreal was established by terrorism. Isreal taking over the West Bank is an act of terrorism. In Vietnam USA troops were terrorist. The whole Iran-Contra affair was about USA supporting and participating in terrorism. In Waco, Tx the FBI acted like terrorist. In any conflict there will always be civilian casualities. The way this "terrorist" label is being used is ridiculous.

Honestly to end terrorism in the USA we need to lock up the white people or send them back to Europe. They use letter bomb, school kids in schools, beat up on gays and lesbians, etc.

The Jews in Isreal only learn one thing from the Holocaust, how to act like Nazi. Next thing you know they will be sewing a big "P" on palestinian clothes and building a gas chamber.

The NMD and TMD cannot stabilize these types of conflicts.

Austrailian Dingo, I'm thinkin' this...yea, we're probably going to stand there and bleed just like the Isrealis will for the rest of their lives...another 19 dead today, and 50 wounded...so what right?...first of all you are stupid to suggest that India can actually go to war with Pakistan when both have nuclear weapons...not the case with the Jews. Only the Jews have the nukes. Neither India nor Pakistan can actually go to war, but YES, Pakistan can continue to send militants in and wage a proxy war. Everyone knows it...everything that happens in Pakistan, they blame India...then the world says...no, it's not true...most of all terror that happens in India is blamed on Pakistan...the world looks into the accusation...they say it's true. This is exactly what a terror war is you idiot...they can keep bombing you without you being able to do anything about it. You have no idea the mental state of a jehadi. If you did, you'd know. But you don't...so I can't sit here and explain you those kinds of silly things that any 1 month old child would understand. And militants are apart of ISI...the intelligence agency so that's why they can get through the lines. Didn't take a genius to listen to what's going on and figure it out. And no one's worried about the aces in any war...no one cares, cause in the end all that's gonna matter is who's destroyed...and that's always been Pakistan. AND...in the 80's Pak gave a hard time to the Soviets because the USA provided Pak with weaponary and backup, otherwise they woulda got their asses whooped. Little did the USA know that 20 years down the line the same Pakistan was going to teach Jose Padilla to blow up a radiation bomb in America and harbor the Taliban as well as Osama bin Ladin. The thing about the Islamic world, is that they take pride in killing people, they enjoy it. They don't take pride in academic achievements or anything worth something real. YOU...plot out a plan on how to curb the terrorists and write it down...unless you support them as well. You can only fight terror with terror. This is a war. No mercy can be given to the radical Muslims.
