JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:15 PM)

n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.
Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.
Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

jet li should stop doing kung fu movies for white people. it's people like him that take the art away in film from real asian actors.

HEY! Jet Li can be funny too! Haven't you guys ever seen The Scripture With No Words or the original Shaolin Temple.

We need both Jackie and Jet, of course. Could even use a few more Asian male leads, in non-fighting roles. Speaking of HK, I think the best is still Bruce Lee. He's been gone thirty years, but he had it all-- phenomenal ability, explosive charisma and presence, and good looks. But he's bigger than a mere entertainment celebrity, of course-- he's a myth and a legend. He changed the world, and made it possible for Jet and Jackie to have the careers they do. Bruce Lee remains our only modern-day Asian male world icon-- James Dean, Babe Ruth, and Elvis rolled into one.

JET LI is the man! Jackie Chan is just too goofy and not scary in a fight. Think about it...who you would rather have backing you up? I would like to see a nice long fight between them. I would gladly pay $10 to see that than wasting on junk like Attack of the Clones. Damn Lucas and his rip-off martial arts.

Women.com named Jet Li as one of it's 12 hottest hunks in hollywood. With his asskicking abilities Jet also exumes charisma and sexiness that is way more cool than Jackie.

Jet Li was named one of E! Online's (Entertainment Online) 25 Sexiest Male Entertainers of the past year. Good to see an Asian male besides Chow Yun Fat recognised in that sense and on that level by the mainstream media and Hollywood. Watch Jet Li climb up the Hollywood ranks this year, this is a big year for him with the epic 'Hero' and 'Cradle to the Grave' hitting our theatres. I also thought he was robbed at the MTV Movie Awards for Best Fight. His fight was far more exciting than Jackie Chan's on Rush Hour 2

I think neither of these guys are particularly good for the Asian image though better than nothing. Neither are good looking or tall. The HK guys are not too good looking in general...not that Chinese men aren't but I've seen HK films and the stars are not particularly good looking.

Some sports stars are better for asian american males like Ichiro or Chan Ho Park...good looking and athletic. I think Japanese males are the best looking and Chinese males the worst anyways...sorry! Koreans are the brawniest.
