JET LI vs JACKIE CHAN: DUELING IMAGES
(Updated Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008, 05:56:15 PM)

n late July 2001 the world's two top martial arts stars announced a deal to co-produce and co-star in an action flick to be filmed in late 2002 for a 2003 release. The question naturally arises: what kind of movie could do justice to two such divergent types? Jackie Chan is a highly acrobatic clown who has built his following on a self-effacing counry bumpkin image. Jet Li is a deadly serious warrior who finds it easier to crack a man's neck than a smile.
Now that both global megastars are releasing big-budget Hollywood films at a breakneck pace for seven-figure salaries, they are the most visible Asians in the American filmgoing consciousness. Whether we Asian Americans like it or not, our image is shaped more by the screen exploits and antics of these two broken-English speaking foreigners than by any dozen Asian American actors. In the filmgoing psyche the sober, chaste and deadly-efficient Chinese cop in Kiss of the Dragon is pitted against the nimble goofball in Rush Hour 2.
Which Hong Kong star is better for the image of Asian Americans?

WHAT YOU SAY

I completely disagree with what you said about Chinese males not being good looking. There are good looking ones out there. In addition, in terms of star appeal, I think it's more important for the actors to exude a certain aura. I can think of Leslie Cheung, or Tony Leung. Both are good looking, but they're not particularly tall or big/strong. Yet what makes them attractive is how they radiate on screen.

Justin:

Watch Jet Li's HK made movies like Fong Sai Yuk I & II (in my opinion, his best movies). He's capable of comedy and doing better fight scenes than what Hollywood brings out of him. And you won't see the computer crap in these Chinese movies, probably because they can't afford it and more importantly, there's no need for it. What you will see is Jet Li doing beautiful martial arts, almost balletic.

Btw, I don't think he's like Bruce Lee at all. He's more contemplative and B Lee is more fiery-like. I love them both though.

Although I definitely believe that Jet Li would slaughter Jackie Chan in a fight, Chan is much, much better for the Asian Image. He is a down to earth character who can make a joke about himself. Li on the otherhand, I severely dislike! He is an uptight, wannabe Bruce Lee, who always plays some quiet, say nothing badass who never smiles. Li, if you are so badass, why don't you actually DO some of the stunts in your movies like Jackie Chan does. We've all seen the computer crap many times over. Some real footage might be nice!

Both of them are great, but jet Li is more beautiful.

Mr Chan,

I believe your opinion of Jacky and Jet are in the minority of the world population.

Trust me Jet Li is more believable because he is a REAL martial arts champion. Chan is a stuntman who will go down in a fight against Jet Li.

Jet Li and Jackie Chan are chop socky actors who I can't stand - especially Jet Li. Both are neither remarkably good looking or good actors. If I had to pick one it would have to be Jackie Chan because his actions are more believable.
Mr Chan    Friday, July 12, 2002 at 07:40:05 (PDT)
Well i'm a big fan of them both! Jakie chan does more cool looking tricks. Jet li normaly fights. so in my conclusion i think that a movie with both of them would be the best!!!!

I think that Jet Li has gone way too serious when he hit Hollywood...I watched a bunch of his Chinese movies and a lot them are funny and he plays humourous characters on the set. What happened when he reached the U.S.? Does he think that his seriousness and rated 18+ movies are better for his Hollywood movie career? Or did he just change like that?

No offense. But, I hated Rush Hour 2. It was a ****** movie to me. Don't take the **** too personal. That is how I feel.

P.S. I would say Jackie Chan and Jet Li are BOTH Hong Kong stars that are better for the image of AA's.

I think Jet Li and Jackie Chan are both interesting character. I liked both their movies. Jackie Chan is more to the comedy side and Jet Li is more serious in his movie when fighting the bad guyz. He reminds me of Bruce Lee. I think it is great to have them both. They do produce good movies and I do enjoy watching them. I would also say that they are the only two popular asain movies star on camera. I hope that in the future there will be more martial artist like them that can do the things that do in movies. B/c later on we do know that even movies star like Jet Li and Jackie Chan will eventually retired.
