Telling Off a Linecutter at Sam's Club
was shopping at Sam's club, and earlier that week, my mother asked me to return a brand new sewing machine that she had bought. So I went to the return desk, and as I was standing in line, a white women comes upto me and asked me rudely if I was in line. So I let her attitude slide, coz I didnt want trouble, and I answered yes, and continued waiting. The next minute, I was distracted by a cute baby in the arms of his mother, and next thing you know that white woman cut in front of me! I had been waiting in line for 15 minutes, and needless to say, I was pissed. So I told her politely, "Excuse me, but I think I was first." To which she says, indignantly, " She (the store attendant) asked me to come up first." From what I gathered, I think this woman expected Asian men (or maybe Asians in general) to be spineless, as something not to be taken too seriously. That thought made my blood boil, so I walked upto the counter, SLAMMED my box on the counter, looked her right in the eye, and said quietly, "I don't think so." To that, all she could muster up was a quiet, "Okay, that's only fair. You go first."

I'm telling you, I haven't felt many things that felt better than that moment. It was redemption, in every sense of the word, redemption for suffering numerous indignities. Everyone around us was staring, and I basically made her look like the snooty bigot that she was. A word to all Asian americans, especially the men: WE ARE NOT DOORMATS. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, and MAKE SOME NOISE when warranted.
