Afternoon Romance in Central Park

t was a beautiful day in NYC and I was in Central Park walking around. After some time of walk, I ran into this arena where a lot of people were dancing on their rollerblades. I thought that was an interesting scene and decided it was a good time for me to rest. So I went up to a hill nearby to find a place to sit. When I looked around, I saw this blond girl sitting by herself studying. I wondered to myself, what a cute girl doing in here by herself? Most people there were either wild, street-type, party people or just lost tourists, but she just looked too proper for the crowd and tourists don't study. I sat not too far from her. I could tell that she enjoyed herself as once in a while she looked down to the arena and moved her body a little as if she was dancing. I kept thinking should I talk to her or not? What if she thinks I'm a psycho on the loose? Afterall, I was wearing my dirty sneakers and the same t-shirt and shorts as the day before (and I was unemployed, which degraded my self-confidence), and she was in too nice an outfit.

Finally, at one point, our eyes met each other and I took my chances to talk to her: "How come you're not down there in the arena?", I asked with a smile. I forgot her response or maybe I didn't hear it because of the loud music from the arena. But I remember she asked me back how come I'm not in the arena. I said to her that I wasn't planning to be there--I got there by accident and bla, bla, blah. She couldn't hear me well, either. And then she did something I didn't expect: She gave me a hand signal asking me to sit next to her! WOW. She even moved over to share her towel with me to sit on! This is unreal, I said to myself.

She turned out to be a college student from New Jersey. She was very lovely, funny, cheerful and easy to talk to and pretty. I felt very comfortable instantly with her. We chatted asking each other a lot of questions: where we lived, what we did in our free time, etc., and joked around a little.

The rollerblading/dancing thing was over shortly after. All of sudden, we found ourselves looking at an almost empty lot and it was quiet, no more music, and everyone was leaving. We stopped talking for few moments. Feeling awkward, I asked her if she wanted to walk around in the park. She said yes. She asked me if I had been to Shakespeare Garden. I said no. So we went there.

The garden turned out to be something I didn't imagine it would be. It was full of flowers everywhere: red, purple, yellow, white, etc. Very beautiful. It was getting dark and very quiet. I saw a few couples holding hands enjoying the flowers quietly. At this point, I felt funny. I smelled romance in the air. I felt like I wanted to hold her hand and kissed her.

She then took me to a castle near the garden. We went all the way up and from there we could see the entire Central Park including the lake near the castle and the Manhattan skyline at dusk. It was almost dark with slight blue in the sky. We stayed there for a while. We talked about a lot of things about ourselves while enjoying the spectacular view. We stood close to each other side by side. Once in a while my hand touched hers briskly. I felt the electricity.

After we had enough of the view, we decided to go down. On the way to exit the park, we passed the Fountain, the place with a big fountain and a lake. Many movies where shot there. We decided to go in there and sat near the fountain. There were only a handful of people there. The place was quiet and dark. Again, we talked and talked while the sound of the water falling from the fountain filling up the air along with the summer breeze. She got more personal this time. She asked me if I had a girlfriend. Not at this moment, I said. We then talked about our love lives. She said she was currently in a 3-month relationship but she wasn't really sure if the guy liked her or not.

As we talked, we softly heard music playing from far away. I asked her if she would like to dance with me. She said yes. She gave me her hand and we danced slowly. I felt funny as I touched her soft hand. She also tried to teach me some Latin dance she knew. It was really fun. Everytime I did the move right, she would say "Niiiiice!" Then later the garbage truck came in with bright light, loud noise and "flowery" smell and it stopped right next to us. We decided to take a hike.

We walked along this Avenue in Central Park. It was a wide and long walkway with big trees alongside. Nobody was around. We just walked alone. We could only hear the breeze passing through the leaves and our conversation. It felt so serene and peaceful. I wanted to hold her hand, but didn't.

We exited the park and walked toward the bus station where she was going to take her bus back to New Jersey. We walked along Fifth Avenue and saw this guy in a traditional Scotish skirt playing pipe (or flute?). She said underneath that skirt, the guy didn't wear underwear. I didn't believe her. We made a bet. She said if I lost I had to throw a party for my birthday, which was coming soon, and take everyone to Swing dance afterward. (Ealier I told her I didn't want to have a birthday party because I was too depressed). Nobody won the bet because the Scottish guy didn't want to reveal the secret.

We walked through Times Square. It was so crowded there as usual. We finally held each other's hands, to avoid getting seperated. I enjoyed it.

We finally arived at the gate at the station where her bus was. She opened her bag, pulling a piece of paper and writing her phone number on it. After she gave it to me, I asked her if she wanted my number in case I didn't call her for any reason, maybe because of losing her number by accident. She said "Of course, I want the pasta." Earlier I told her that even though I'm Asian, I made the best pasta in the world, and she wanted to try it. "What's for the desert?", she asked next. I just laughed.

She gave me a hug and I gave her a kiss goodbye on the cheek. As she walked toward the bus, she turned around and waived goodbye, smiling.

On my way home on the subway, I looked at the time. It was past 11:30pm. That means I was with her for nearly 6 hours! Time certainly flew by. I felt like I just woke up from a dream. The picture of me seeing her for the first time, her asking me to sit next to her, Shakespeare Garden, the castle, the darkness, us laughing together, the dance near the fountain, the funny feeling, the feeling of touching her hand for the first time, the quietness, the serene walk, the hand holding, the phone number, the hug, the kiss and the goodbye waive, all flashed in my mind.

Since I got laid off earlier this year, my life have been basically falling apart. I wasn't a happy person at all, until last night. It was the most beautiful and romantic night for a long time for me. Everything just happened because of her. I'm glad I took chances to talk to her. I'm not in love with her yet. But I'm looking forward to getting to know her more. I'm planning to invite her for dinner for my world's famous pasta. I'm planning to have a party for my birthday because now I have something to celebrate for. Of course, I don't want to expect too much. She has a boyfriend afterall. But even if this didn't work out for any reasons, the memory I have with her last night in Central Park would last forever...
