TSJ on Shanghai Nightlife and Girls
just got back from my trip to the motherland.
Anyways, as far as girls go, they sure weren't lying about Suzhou. I could seriously spend the rest of my life there. Wuxi has tons of hotties too. Both cities are in the same region, and Wuxi is turning itself into a miniature HK, complete with Vegas style neon lights and double decker busses.
Don't believe the hype about Shanghai. They are a good 20-30 years behind HK and Tokyo. Girls are hot as hell, and dress fairly modern, but are extremely country like, and not very sophisticated at all. They try toooo hard to be like HK and Taipei, without trying to forge their own identity. Posters of Andy Lau and F4 are emblazoned all over the city. However, their fashions are still below par. I think my little sis was the best dressed girl in the city, and that's saying a lot.
The city is marketed as "a most international city," where English is spoken by many. Suuuure... you will be hardpressed to find anyone who can speak putonghua, let alone English. And let me tell you... other than Vietnamese, native Shanghainese has got to be the most annoying language out there. It just sounds horrible!
Clubs? Zzzzz... Girls just strut back and forth. No grinding, no freaking. There was this one free concert at the Super Brand Mall, a monumental Thailand/China collaboration right across the street from the tower, which featured an Australian cover band. They rocked! They were playing your typical American songs, as well as singing some A-Mei and F4 songs... and they were a mixed group of black and white! Anyways, as usual, when there is a dope live band onstage, I just can't help but get my groove on. My little sis and I decided to get up near the stage and just started dancing. No one joined us! We were just up there like buffoons, while the most anyone else did was clap their hands. What a waste. I'm sure the band appreciated the fact that at least two people enjoyed the show.
Also, we were at this restaurant at the same mall which caters to more western businesses, and the waitresses there didn't even know what a tip was! They told us we dropped our money on the table. I mean, maybe in China they don't tip, but they are in the "international business district" in an "international city," and they don't know international customs?!
We stood out like a sore thumb, with our American brand clothing. I had mostly Hollister/A&F type stuff on with Nike Shox (hardly anyone wears Nikes in China). My sis had Polo Sport and Bebe looking stuff. People were trying to figure out where we were from. Most thought HK, since we were talking to each other in Canto, and some said Singapore, and even Japan, but most were in the back of their minds, hoping that the answer was good old USA, and when they found out we were, their eyes all lit up.
With that being said, just flash your Benjis (or even Georgies for that matter), and any Shanghainese girl you want is all yours. I got more pops in three days there than I do a whole year out here, and I'm just an average looking guy of average height. Honestly, I'd rather have a Suzhou girl over a Shanghai girl. At least that way, you know what you are getting, a simple down home country girl with old fashioned values, instead of a country girl who just thinks she is modern, and will instantly turn corrupted at the smell of cold hard cash.
Beijing has some hotties, but are very, very reserved. No one wears modern fashions. No sandals or tight shirts or anything. The city is full of smog, and really isn't a fun place to be. The only thing they have are the historical landmarks. Summer Palace and Great Wall are awesome, especially the latter. Tianenman Square and Forbidden Palace? Tourist traps.
Anyways, contact me if you want to talk more. I know you guys have been there, so maybe we can swap stories.

Hey TSJ:
You have some misperception about shanghai girl probably cos you 've only resorted to places like dance club, night bos and whatnot. You should go to other places and find nice girls out there.

????
you really must be IGNORANT about China.
many Shanghainese girls are very hot, but to say they are country-like and unsophisticated????
... maybe the girls from the surrounding countryside, but certainly not native Shanghaiese.
they have a reputation as the most sophisticated and shrewd girls in China; and Shanghai is the most Westernized city in China (not including Hong Kong), so for you to say that they are country-like is simply absurd.
>Don't believe the hype about Shanghai. They are a good 20-30 years behind HK and Tokyo.

Oh yeah... one more thing I forgot to mention is the food.
It is widely acknowledged that Cantonese people have the best food in all of China. Even Beijing people will tell you that. Native Beijing food isn't very impressive. Everywhere you go, there is always a "Hong Kong style" restaurant serving dim sum, bbq pork, chow mein, won ton mein, and all that kind of stuff, and it is packed to the rafters.
However, they always crack jokes about Cantonese people eating anything and everything. I'm sure you have heard the joke about Cantonese eating anything with legs except a table... or this one:
What would China do if an alien landed there?
Beijing guy: We should study it and write books about it!
Shanghai guy: We should do scientific research on it!
Cantonese guy: You guys are idiots! With my special blend of herbs and spices, we can make a nice feast out of it!
Anyways, Suzhou food is very sweet (just like the girls), and is appealing to my tastes. Wuxi is where hot and sour soup, as well as little dragon buns were created, so you know that stuff is great. The soup is SUPER sour, just the way I like it. Shanghai is a very new city (only 700 years history), so they don't have all that many of their own traditional foods besides their version of little dragon buns.
After sampling the authentic food in China, I have to say that it isn't much different that what I eat every day here in the Bay Area. That just goes to show that the food we get here is pretty darn good. Pretty much everything I ate there is readily accesible here. Whoever said American Chinese food is watered down is wrong! The only difference is that we get larger servings and tons more meat!

Well, I never tried to show myself off as an American. In fact, I tried to hide it. The dancing thing... well, I just couldn't help myself. Besides, if China wants to become more international, that is something they are going to have to start getting into. Maybe I can be the first to show them how to get their groove on, Cali style. =P
I just wanted to blend in with the locals. We did all the things that the regular city folks do, like ride the metro and hang out in the underground malls, especially the aptly named "Hong Kong Mall" right underneath People's Square. Other cool spots are the Grand Gateway, one of many huge shopping areas in the southside of town.
The aforementioned Super Brand Mall is HUGE! Now, I've been to the West Edmonton Mall, and this place looked much bigger. WEM is only two stories, but is spread out. This place is seven stories, and winds on forever like a maze.
We avoided the tourist trap areas such as Nanking Road (Nanjing in Mandarin, but somehow they still use the Cantonese translation?). Okay, we were there for a short while, but just to see what the fuss was all about. It wasn't all that impressive. For me, the best way to explore the city is to act as if you live there. So, we didn't ride a taxi or take those tour buses. We just walked and took public transportation (no chance to ride a bike, unfortunately).
"Nobody wears Nikes in Asia. Levi, GAP, Banana Republic. Are all unheard of brands in Asia."
Gap is big in Beijing (well, at least the knockoffs are). I saw a ton of locals with it on. The only place I saw selling Nikes was Wuxi, which I found to be the most westernized city. They even had the latest Air Jordans! Hey, I took the liberty of buying some China brand clothing called Baleno. Actually, it is an HK brand, so I don't know if that counts as a mainland company. It's not bad, and it's dirt cheap too. Andy Lau endorses it, so it must be good! haha
"By the way...Beijing girls are definitely the best looking out of all of China..."
Some, yes. As a whole, no. There are too many dark, dark country/mountain people there that bring the average waaay down. Shanghai girls are better on average. I like their complexion and their puffier cheeks better.
"more pops in three days there than I do a whole year out here,"
Uh....
Loser..."
Hey, hey! Chinese girls in Cali are mucho stuck up. I'm talking just about Chinese girls now. I still love the attention I get from those fly Pinays! =)
"It is just that they are less gullable than minor province hick girls...
Which makes them less available to guys that relies on playing the "US" card..."
Trust me. If they had a chance to bail their souvenir shop jobs catering to rich tourists for the chance to come to America, they would in a heartbeat. They are treated like cattle in those places. It's hilarious to see how they all run in unison out of their posts when the closing bell rings, like a bunch of little school girls skipping out to recess. Beijing girls are so uptight. It's like they have Chairman Mao's presence watching over them at all times. Beijing clubs are even worse than Shanghai.
"On my first trip as a business person. I made the mistake of mentioning off the cusp I was from the USA when I was at Bar. And every con artist in the joint came out of the shadows.
I would be careful with some of the girls you meet in China. I heard enough horror stories of girls leading unsuspecting guys to gang infested karoke bars and get the crap beat out of them for some traveller checks."
Yeah, my contacts there now are all well educated and some went to school overseas. It's not like I just picked up some girls off the street. Besides, it's the same as here in the states. You don't just go out somewhere picking up on random chicks in some bar (well, at least I don't). I actually found every city out there to be a lot safer than the areas I live in back home.
"I think Beijing girl have really great bodies."
How can you tell? You can't even see their bodies.
"So, uh...you're saying you had to pay these girls to get it on with you?"
Haha... that probably came off the wrong way, huh? Well, I just said "flash" it, not give it to them. =P
Overall, Shanghai and Beijing girls are cute, but they still don't compare to my beloved HK girls. Then again, it's not a fair comparison because HK people aren't from a particular region. They are a melting pot from all over China. Besides, my Cantonese is much better than my putonghua (common language) and Shanghainese, so I can communicate better with HK girls. Other than Suzhou, HK is still the place to be.
Hey AC. What type of business do you do in China? I would definitely be interested in working out there now. I am even considering going back to school to get a teaching credential so I can teach English in China (lord knows they could sure use it). Have you ever been to Guangzhou or Shenzhen? I want to check those places out. We'll probably hit them up the next time we go to HK, and then go down to my parents' old village in Toisan.
China is pumping buku bucks into Shanghai, but most of the office buildings look vacant. (I don't have hard facts. This is just an observation.) Do you really think Shanghai is as prosperous as people make it out to be? With Japan in a slump, and American business on the downfall, who has the capital to invest over there?

TSJ,
Nobody wears Nikes in Asia. Levi, GAP, Banana Republic. Are all unheard of brands in Asia.
If you like to slam dance or yell in a dance club, you will be considered pretty out there in Chinese society.
No tipping in Asia. That is just the norm. Just like tipping is the norm in the Americas.
I've been to China as a student and a business person. It is okay as a student to tell people that your from the USA. Because you're young, relatively poor, and not established.
On my first trip as a business person. I made the mistake of mentioning off the cusp I was from the USA when I was at Bar. And every con artist in the joint came out of the shadows.
