TSJ on Shanghai Nightlife and Girls
just got back from my trip to the motherland.
Anyways, as far as girls go, they sure weren't lying about Suzhou. I could seriously spend the rest of my life there. Wuxi has tons of hotties too. Both cities are in the same region, and Wuxi is turning itself into a miniature HK, complete with Vegas style neon lights and double decker busses.
Don't believe the hype about Shanghai. They are a good 20-30 years behind HK and Tokyo. Girls are hot as hell, and dress fairly modern, but are extremely country like, and not very sophisticated at all. They try toooo hard to be like HK and Taipei, without trying to forge their own identity. Posters of Andy Lau and F4 are emblazoned all over the city. However, their fashions are still below par. I think my little sis was the best dressed girl in the city, and that's saying a lot.
The city is marketed as "a most international city," where English is spoken by many. Suuuure... you will be hardpressed to find anyone who can speak putonghua, let alone English. And let me tell you... other than Vietnamese, native Shanghainese has got to be the most annoying language out there. It just sounds horrible!
Clubs? Zzzzz... Girls just strut back and forth. No grinding, no freaking. There was this one free concert at the Super Brand Mall, a monumental Thailand/China collaboration right across the street from the tower, which featured an Australian cover band. They rocked! They were playing your typical American songs, as well as singing some A-Mei and F4 songs... and they were a mixed group of black and white! Anyways, as usual, when there is a dope live band onstage, I just can't help but get my groove on. My little sis and I decided to get up near the stage and just started dancing. No one joined us! We were just up there like buffoons, while the most anyone else did was clap their hands. What a waste. I'm sure the band appreciated the fact that at least two people enjoyed the show.
Also, we were at this restaurant at the same mall which caters to more western businesses, and the waitresses there didn't even know what a tip was! They told us we dropped our money on the table. I mean, maybe in China they don't tip, but they are in the "international business district" in an "international city," and they don't know international customs?!
We stood out like a sore thumb, with our American brand clothing. I had mostly Hollister/A&F type stuff on with Nike Shox (hardly anyone wears Nikes in China). My sis had Polo Sport and Bebe looking stuff. People were trying to figure out where we were from. Most thought HK, since we were talking to each other in Canto, and some said Singapore, and even Japan, but most were in the back of their minds, hoping that the answer was good old USA, and when they found out we were, their eyes all lit up.
With that being said, just flash your Benjis (or even Georgies for that matter), and any Shanghainese girl you want is all yours. I got more pops in three days there than I do a whole year out here, and I'm just an average looking guy of average height. Honestly, I'd rather have a Suzhou girl over a Shanghai girl. At least that way, you know what you are getting, a simple down home country girl with old fashioned values, instead of a country girl who just thinks she is modern, and will instantly turn corrupted at the smell of cold hard cash.
Beijing has some hotties, but are very, very reserved. No one wears modern fashions. No sandals or tight shirts or anything. The city is full of smog, and really isn't a fun place to be. The only thing they have are the historical landmarks. Summer Palace and Great Wall are awesome, especially the latter. Tianenman Square and Forbidden Palace? Tourist traps.
Anyways, contact me if you want to talk more. I know you guys have been there, so maybe we can swap stories.

AC,
Wow, it looks like you've been around. You are the international man of mystery or something. haha
How was the teaching gig? What city was it in? I hope it wasn't some far inland country town.
As far as fashions go, hip hop clothing is big now. It's been hot in Japan for years, then Korea. Now, China is starting to catch on. Just pick up the latest Chinese fashion magazines (albeit most are HK), and you will see baggy t-shirts and athletic shoes. They wear Dada and Ecko, and all that.
College girls? Of course! Who wouldn't want that?!
The skyline does look a bit odd. The buildings are all high tech looking, but they made them all hokey with neon lights. They are also disjointed from the rest of the city. It is quite apparent they were built within the last ten years because they don't match the character of the older parts of the city.
Also, why the hell is the Bund called "Shanghai Beach" in Chinese? There isn't anything remotely resembling a beach in the vicinity. Furthermore, the water is just plain nasty. I saw debris, oil, and whatnot all over the place.

Justin,
I'm glad someone who knows a lot more about the subject actually agrees with me. I only spent a few days there, so I am still basically an outsider looking in, gathering some basic generalizations. You are from there, so your opinion is far more valid. If I wanted some stuck up materialistic b*tch, I would just stick with ABC girls.
I have met a few wealthy Shanghai girls here in CA, and damn... do they have some attitude, much moreso than HK or Taiwanese chicks. And they get pissed off at the fact that all the Chinese around here are either speaking Cantonese or Taiwanese Mandarin.
How can Shanghainese sound so different? It's like not even the same people developed it or something. At least with Cantonese and Mandarin, some words and expressions are similar, so if an HK guy and Taiwanese guy were to speak (although many HK people know Mandarin, but that's beside the point) in their native languages to each other, there would still be some level of understanding. With Shanghainese, I am completely clueless.
This one time, some rich Shanghainese girl wanted to check out our houses (I work in real estate). She instantly busted out in her native tongue, expecting me to be perfectly fluent, and I had no clue what she was saying. I didn't even know what language it was. I thought it was Burmese or Indonesian or something. Then, she got all pissed when I didn't understand. Girl, you are in San Francisco... aka HK2! Do you expect me to know Shanghainese?!
I looove Wuxi. It's so nice. The shopping district is really cool. It has changed a lot in the past two years. The billboards they have are even bigger than in Shanghai, and for a moment there, I thought I was in Times Square or something. It's pretty funny now because they have this HUUUGE F4 poster on display.
The girls are comparable to Suzhou, since it's the same region, but somehow, the legendary status of Suzhou makes it just a little bit better in my opinion. For instance, if I married some girl from Wuxi, people here would be like, "Okay, cool!" If I married a Suzhou girl, they would be like, "DAAAAMN! That's what I'm talkin' about!" She wouldn't even have to look all that great (chances are slim that she wouldn't), but the allure of being from Suzhou alone already makes her fine.

I just got back from Shanghai on a business trip in August. I found it to be the most polluted city I have ever been in and I have travelled all over Asia, though not Beijing. I was standing on the Puxi side and could barely see over to the Pudong side. With that said, the energy there was palpable. People seemed like they were excited to work on the next project or business. It reminded me of New York. As far as the women, I prefer the overall package of the ones in Hong Kong. I am a bit biased since I was born there, but still, the women in Hong Kong are much more educated, classy, and urbane. The women that I met in Shanghai seemed to be trying too hard and ended up being a comic book version of a modern woman.
I am not sure I would agree that the Shanghai women on average are any more beautiful than others around the world. I think it is just that the sheer density of women there gives a greater chance of some beautiful women to be seen.

Just because the locals choose not to dance the way that people do in southern california, it does not make them boring, lame or unhip. During the entire writeup, you showed no respect for local culture, instead you expect the locals to be in awe of your "cali" style.
"the waitresses there didn't even know what a tip was! They told us we dropped our money on the table. I mean, maybe in China they don't tip, but they are in the "international business district" in an "international city," and they don't know international customs?!"
yeh, we should all eat at Pizza Hut, wear A&F, celebrate Christmas, forget our own customs. What is wrong with you? You expect Shanghai to be a replica of US. What do you do in European countries? The custom of tipping there is different as well. Are european cities not international?
Give me a break, you sounds like a ABC guy going back to China, and all the sudden think he is the coolest thing walking around. You have such a superiority complex. NHB

I spent first fifteen years of my life in China: two years in Wuxi and the rest in Shanghai. Since I left, I went back every two years to see my friends in Shanghai and my grandparent in Wuxi.
I have to agree with TSJ's comment on Shanghai girls. They like money more than anything else. Even when I was in primary school, my female classmates were making comments like "wealth is most important when looking for a man, love can be cultivated later on". Of course, not every girl is like that. The most beautiful girl in my secondary school, who also went to the top university in Shanghai is dating my poor but ambitious friend. But she is only an exception. Most girls prefer money and passport. One of my Australian friend went to Shanghai early this year. He can't find any woman in Australia, but attracted many girls in Shanghai.
Regarding girls in WuXi, they are much more genuine. They may not be as sophisticated as city girls, but they are more suitable for long term relationship.

Dude you are right TSJ. SH is a snooze. All people do there is shop all day. That's why there are so many malls, but they still can't dress right. You should save your benjis and to go the other SH - SHenzhen. That's where the girls really know how to partae!!

"You have some misperception about shanghai girl probably cos you 've only resorted to places like dance club, night bos and whatnot. You should go to other places and find nice girls out there."
Any suggestions? I was only there for a few days this time around, so it was more of a sampler platter. Next time will be the entree. Like I said, I went to all the popular local malls like Hong Kong Underground, Grand Gateway, and Super Brand.
"they have a reputation as the most sophisticated and shrewd girls in China; and Shanghai is the most Westernized city in China (not including Hong Kong), so for you to say that they are country-like is simply absurd."
They may be sophisticated for China standards, but compared to other Asian cities, especially HK (we Cantonese will never admit HK as being part of China), Taipei, and Tokyo, they are years behind. Being the most sophisticated city in China really isn't saying much. That's like saying you are the prettiest girl in Arkansas.
All the nice buildings and what not are just a facade. It's like a car that is all show, and no go. It looks good on the outside, but what's on the inside?
Like I already wrote, I would much rather take a country Suzhou or Wuxi girl over SH because you know what you are getting.

TSJ,
I think Shanghai still has a future. Foreign investment is just one aspect of China's economy. The local economy is also picking up in China. We started retailing some of our product line in China recently and the locals are buying it up.
I did the English Teacher thing in ROC for a while. I'm pretty sure their are some local English schools in China that will hire you. Just beware of "reverse discrimination" in that market. It is a hard sell to convince people in Asia that you are fluent in English and what not when you hair is not blonde.
It is kind of hard to buy clothes in Asia or at least I find it hard, because I'm use to the USA 100% cotton and heavy weight. However, asian are more use to cotton blends and lighter weight. I also don't like the colors sense in asia, too much bright colors and prints. But that is just me...too acclimated to urban outfitters as a youth I guess.
"We just walked and took public transportation"
Uhm I think parts of Nanjing RD are close to everything but foot traffic. It sucks if you work in that section. Because you have to park or get off the bus like 2-3 blocks away.
There are a lot of thing I found strange in Shanghai...the Skyline for one. Those bubble towers really need to come down in my opinion.
If your into the College girl crowd. There are 4 major campus in Shanghai. Two in the north (Fudan, Tongji) and two in the South (East China Normal and Xujiahui).
I was in the bar that was in the hotel I was staying at the time. I was too lazy to get food outside so went to the bar to get a quick fix.
Yeah the meat thing is right on. You can really find a 1/4" steak anywhere on that side of the globe. All the meat in asia is slice, chopped, mashed and marinated. They also like pork more than they like beef.
