TSJ on Shanghai Nightlife and Girls

just got back from my trip to the motherland.
Anyways, as far as girls go, they sure weren't lying about Suzhou. I could seriously spend the rest of my life there. Wuxi has tons of hotties too. Both cities are in the same region, and Wuxi is turning itself into a miniature HK, complete with Vegas style neon lights and double decker busses.

Don't believe the hype about Shanghai. They are a good 20-30 years behind HK and Tokyo. Girls are hot as hell, and dress fairly modern, but are extremely country like, and not very sophisticated at all. They try toooo hard to be like HK and Taipei, without trying to forge their own identity. Posters of Andy Lau and F4 are emblazoned all over the city. However, their fashions are still below par. I think my little sis was the best dressed girl in the city, and that's saying a lot.

The city is marketed as "a most international city," where English is spoken by many. Suuuure... you will be hardpressed to find anyone who can speak putonghua, let alone English. And let me tell you... other than Vietnamese, native Shanghainese has got to be the most annoying language out there. It just sounds horrible!

Clubs? Zzzzz... Girls just strut back and forth. No grinding, no freaking. There was this one free concert at the Super Brand Mall, a monumental Thailand/China collaboration right across the street from the tower, which featured an Australian cover band. They rocked! They were playing your typical American songs, as well as singing some A-Mei and F4 songs... and they were a mixed group of black and white! Anyways, as usual, when there is a dope live band onstage, I just can't help but get my groove on. My little sis and I decided to get up near the stage and just started dancing. No one joined us! We were just up there like buffoons, while the most anyone else did was clap their hands. What a waste. I'm sure the band appreciated the fact that at least two people enjoyed the show.

Also, we were at this restaurant at the same mall which caters to more western businesses, and the waitresses there didn't even know what a tip was! They told us we dropped our money on the table. I mean, maybe in China they don't tip, but they are in the "international business district" in an "international city," and they don't know international customs?!

We stood out like a sore thumb, with our American brand clothing. I had mostly Hollister/A&F type stuff on with Nike Shox (hardly anyone wears Nikes in China). My sis had Polo Sport and Bebe looking stuff. People were trying to figure out where we were from. Most thought HK, since we were talking to each other in Canto, and some said Singapore, and even Japan, but most were in the back of their minds, hoping that the answer was good old USA, and when they found out we were, their eyes all lit up.

With that being said, just flash your Benjis (or even Georgies for that matter), and any Shanghainese girl you want is all yours. I got more pops in three days there than I do a whole year out here, and I'm just an average looking guy of average height. Honestly, I'd rather have a Suzhou girl over a Shanghai girl. At least that way, you know what you are getting, a simple down home country girl with old fashioned values, instead of a country girl who just thinks she is modern, and will instantly turn corrupted at the smell of cold hard cash.

Beijing has some hotties, but are very, very reserved. No one wears modern fashions. No sandals or tight shirts or anything. The city is full of smog, and really isn't a fun place to be. The only thing they have are the historical landmarks. Summer Palace and Great Wall are awesome, especially the latter. Tianenman Square and Forbidden Palace? Tourist traps.

Anyways, contact me if you want to talk more. I know you guys have been there, so maybe we can swap stories.

HK boy is right. There is a HUGE difference between a first gen ABC and a 3452345365467th gen. At least most first gens know the language because they speak it with their parents, unlike the 2456427th gens, whose parents don't even know. When they go to China, they probably view it from the perspective of a white boy.

And who came up with the notion that I'm ABC anyways? I never mentioned anywhere that I was.

About the clothing... just because I have American clothing, it doesn't mean I'm American. HK and Japanese people wear hip hop and casual American gear too. I think peoples' first guess was that I was from HK.

"HK girls aren’t fine? Lay off the sherm, buddy."

HAHAHAHA... ROFLMAO! Hey, pass it down, homey! Let me take a toke!

ABC in Shanghai:

Hey, it's all good. I respect your opinion. At least you didn't come off calling me names and hurling insults like some people. Here is my rebuttal:

a. Yes, I admit. I am shallow. Like Hugh Grant said in About a Boy, "I really am this shallow."

b. Yes! That is so true. I couldn't have said it better myself. I even alluded to this in an earlier response. Guys are only programmed to seek out the fine ones. All the ugly ones, we just overlook. For instance, there could be this party we go to with 100 ugly girls, and just one really fine one. If you get a chance to talk to that really fine girl, and she turns out to be nice, you would be saying, "Man! That party was slammin'!" Also, I don't have that much money. I may be rich for their standards, but for living here in the Bay Area, I'm barely making it!

c. Versace and all that isn't my style anyways. I like the more casual and hip hop look.

d. They may be out of my reach, but I'm not looking for a wife. I just want to have some fun. Maybe if I was looking for a mate, I would take a different approach. By the way, I am educated myself (although my juvenile remarks may not lead you to believe so). I have a bachelor's degree, and I'm going back to school soon for either an MBA or a teaching credential.

So, what brought you there? Is it for work or school?

Californian,

If as you say "People in China look up to anything Western" and as a result this is "what causes large number of asian american women to openly state their preference of white males"....it's funny how something general to the asian population ie admiration of the west becomes something specific to asian females in the USA.....just a thought

I have been living in Shanghai for the past 18 months as an expat (though Shanghai was of my family root too) I have met a range of fellow Americans who have come to Shanghai for their first visit to their (relative) long term stays, here are some "food" for thoughts:

A. Your view was rather shallow with a pure focus on fashion and girls, nothing wrong but shallow.
B. You see what you wanted to see: The girls flock to you for a clear reason: your $. Trust me, same thing will happen in Vegas, Rio or Amsterdam if that is what you were looking for. Plus, you even know about your self-attractiveness, huh?
C. If by wearing A&F or Hollister and you got noticed, that tells me the girls you saw and met were some bottom eaters, if you are looking to find someone truly beautiful with a class (though she may still be selling herself), you may want to try something like Versace, Ferragamo, Hermes or Valentino... Of course, you are still meeting some high(er) class meat.
D. Shanghai has a lot of wealthy and edcuated yet pretty girls, but I think they are out of your reach by the way (for anyone) to hold onto you views and value.

Hey TSJ, while I do not agree too much what you presented here, I do not mean personally critisize you since I do believe we all are entitled to be who we want to be, but I wanted to convey the experience of mine and many others' over the past 18 months as to provide a different angle and view to those who are interested in Shanghai and what it is all about in the respective areas.

Californian:

In their eyes, if you are American, you ARE cool.

American = cool. Get it?

Dongbei:

HK girls aren’t fine? Lay off the sherm, buddy. If Beijingers find HK’ers so repulsive, why the heck are there posters of Andy Lau, Ekin Cheng, Edison, Nick Tse, etc. all over the city?!

Everyone also needs to realize that there is a huge difference between first generation ABC’s and 4th or 5th generation. Most first gens at least retain some cultural values from their parents. At least many can speak their native language. The same cannot be said for the totally whitewashed 4th or 5th generationals.
HK Boy    Wednesday, October 02, 2002 at 15:14:11 (PDT)    [209.239.198.145]

"I hope you realize that these girls are coming up to you because you are from America, not because how cool you are."

Hehe... well, I never said they came up to me because I was cool. I even mentioned that girls will dig you just because you are American in the main story. I said, "With that being said, just flash your Benjis (or even Georgies for that matter), and any Shanghainese girl you want is all yours." Besides, being American, doesn't that automatically make me "cool?" =P

Hey, if you have a secret weapon, USE IT! Whatever it takes, man! If you had some trait girls loved, wouldn't you exploit it to the maximum degree?!
It's all in good fun. It's not like I was looking for a wife.

"Are you nuts? Cantonese girls do not compare to mainland girls at all.

When I went to HK, I did not see one good looking woman."

First of all, not everyone in HK is Cantonese. HK is a melting pot of all Chinese races. Chinese from all regions went there because it is the most prosperous of cities. There are plenty of Beijing and Shanghai girls in HK. They all speak Cantonese, just like all of us in America speak English, despite our diverse backgrounds.

Where the heck is Dong Bei? Hey, don't hate on HK people because we have the wealthiest city in China. I don't see Dong Bei, wherever that is, making movies or having a reputation for being a bustling city.

Also, in the international arena, Cantonese have made more inroads than any other Asians. When people think of Chinese around the world, who do they think of? Cantonese. Yes, they eat HK dim sum, won ton mein, bbq pork, etc. They watch southern style lion dancing, not that Barkley from Sesame Street lion dancing you northerners have. And what language is spoken by 90% of the Chinese outside of China? You got it. Cantonese. So think before you speak about how "low class" HK and Cantonese people are.

hmm...I wasn't really criticizing TSJ for checking out the women there, i dont remember mentioning anything about women in my post
Just didnt' like the mindset and attitude he and a lot of ABC's seem to have
If I sounded harsh I didn't mean to

"Why don't you go tell all those chicks who came up to me what a dork I really am?"

I hope you realize that these girls are coming up to you because you are from America, not because how cool you are. People in China look up to anything Western. The girls would warm up to anyone from the west regardless if he is dork or not. If you think dorky white guys getting asian girls in United States, you should have seen how many girls dorky white guys getting in Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong.

While you may enjoy the attention from girls in China, since everyone there thinks the west is better. They also look up to white people too. ABCs are popular in China because they are closer to whites than native chineses. This mentality (west is better, white is better) is also what causes large number of asian american women to openly state their preference of white males over asian males in United States.

"in China, Vietnamese are considered as the barbarians"

Really? But millions of Chinese did not agree. They migrated to Vietnam to live with the "barbarians". Have you seen any Viet moved to China to live with the "high class" in history? Do you think Vietnam and China should build a Great Wall in the border? Think twice before speaking dude!

To you cantonese people in here,

Are you nuts? Cantonese girls do not compare to mainland girls at all.

When I went to HK, I did not see one good looking woman.

Cantonese girls are loud, have greasy faces, speak that hideous dialect called cantonese, not to mention they have goldfish eyes that pop out of their sockets, usually have fat lips and buck teeth, and have extremely bad skin.

They look like they just finished the casting of Apocolypse Now.

Nothern chinese girls from Beijing and Dongbei areas have to be the most gorgeous women out there. If you like fine skin, delicate faces and tall elegant women with the beautiful eyes. Those are the ones. Shanghainese girls are also much more attractive than Cantonese girls.

Cantonese aren't even chinese, I consider you guys Northern Viets.

So what are you saying man? ABC's can't go back to China to check out their roots? If so, no wonder people have been so hesitant to go to China before if they think all outsiders are idiots, especially people of their own race who just so happen to have been raised in another country.

This TSJ character reported about what he saw in China. I can't say I agree with him on everything, but you don't have to clown on him. Hey I go back to China to check out girls too. Ain't nothing wrong with that!!

Made in HK,

I think you need to relax a bit. We are just trying to give our perceptions, not say one place/culture is better than another.

The irony is that the grass is always greener on the other side of the Pacific. I am "made in HK" also, but moved to the U.S. when I was very young. I basically dated only ABC's my whole life until I met my future wife up in Vancouver. She happened to be from Guangzhou. I don't think that as a rule, girls in China are "prettier" than ABCs, just different.

And I think that is the point here. No "type" of Chinese is better, just different. So instead of attacking each other, let's just discuss the pros and cons of Asian women around the world. Much more fun that way.

I am not the same Traveller as in the comparing Asian nationalities topic. In fact, I did not even know this handle was already used. I will change it if I post again.

"you stick out like a sore thumb, and basically look like an idiot, sure some people might give you validation for your feeling of superiority, but let me assure you, the majority dont"

Hehe... and what do you think ABC's think of you fobs who actually move here?

"I think you ABC's need to realise, when you go to Asia, you're REALLY not as cool as you think you are."

Once again, here's some one hit wonder who doesn't read eveything and tries to add his two cents. Did I go out of my way to stand out? NO! It just came naturally. I'm sorry I didn't have enough time to shop for what the locals wear so I could "blend in." Why don't you go tell all those chicks who came up to me what a dork I really am?

"All he got out of the trip to China was that Hong Kong women are better looking overall."

You don't agree?

" I couldn't agree with you more but you beat me to the punch. TSJ is obviously immature."

It's better to be immature than old and uptight. Besides, you don't even know how old I am, so how can you judge my level of maturity? What's so immature about checking out girls anyways? If your definition of "immature" is being single and free to roam, well, I guess I'm immature then. You guys must all be locked down to the old ball and chain, with three kids or something. I'll take being immature over that anyday.
