Teen Sensation Ayumi Morita Upsets Ai Sugiyama at Korea Open

o. 3 Ai Sugiyama was one of three seeds to exit the first round of the Korea Open on Monday, beaten by teenage Japanese compatriot Ayumi Morita 7-5, 6-3.

     The 17-year-old Morita, ranked 136th but who reached the quarterfinals at last week's event in Bali, Indonesia, converted six of 10 break-point opportunities, capitalizing by winning 67 percent of the points on Sugiyama's second serve.

     Two other seeded Japanese also were eliminated from the Tier IV event on the outdoor hardcourts of Olympic Park.

     Frenchwoman Severine Bremond needed a pair of tiebreakers to beat No. 7 Aiko Nakamura 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), while Italy's Flavia Pennetta defeated No. 8 Akiko Morigami 6-2, 6-3.

     In two other first-round matches, Russia's Galina Voskoboeva beat Frenchwoman Youlia Fedossova 6-4, 6-1 and Pauline Parmentier of France defeated Edina Gallovits of Romania 6-2, 6-4.
