Seoul Ritz-Carlton Hotel

Seoul, Corea; Tel: 822-3451-8201;

ince its opening in February 1995 the Ritz-Carlton lost no time establishing itself as a luxury leader among Seoul's deluxe hotels. That's no mean feat in a city that enjoys 13 world-class deluxe hotels, including several that have wowed international guests for decades.
     Luxury is celebrated. The interior design and decor throughout is impeccable--not by being plain-vanilla but by boldly and tastefully infusing materials in warm hues with tropical motifs for an effect evocative of the sumptuous ambience of Ritz-Carlton's showcase Southern California resorts. That goes for the plush guest rooms as well as the lobby and 4-story atrium.
     The hotel is centrally located in the Yeoksam commercial district in Seoul's dynamic new Kangnam (South River) area. It's within 15 minutes of KOEX, the World Trade Center, the Apkujung fashion district and Olympic stadium. A five-minute walk gets you to a subway station for a fast ride to any part of Seoul.
     The nine ultra-chic in-hotel restaurants include Hanazono for sushi and teppanyaki overlooking a Japanese garden, Cheehong for daily lunch dimsum and authentic Cantonese dishes and Calasia for California Asian cuisine.

     A large health club with plenty of treadmills and weight machines shares 1 1/2 floors with a state-of-the-art heated pool. The basement levels host an arcade of toney boutiques along with a chic coffee bar and a cafe.
     The hotel enforces a strict no-tipping policy to make up for the 10% service charge all hotels add to room and facility charges.
     Deluxe rooms start at 210,000 won ($250 at current rates). An additional 50,000 won ($56) gets you one of 23 Club rooms with access to five daily food and beverage services in the Club Lounge.
