Moon Cakes
by Andrea Louie
Ballantine, New York, 332pp, $21
REVIEW
n Ohio girl born to Cantonese parents learns early on that nothing is as advertised. Her sister and mother turn out to be unkind. Her beloved father turns out to be disappointingly mortal. Her first love, a white classmate, hurls himself toward a baffling death. Her second love, a Hong Kong Chinese, turns out to be more devoted to his heritage than to Maya. These disappointments send Maya to China in a metaphorical search for moon cakes, symbols of the wholeness that eludes her. All this heavy-duty regret could have mired the novel in melodrama. Fortunately, Andrea Louie's lyric prowess coupled with her keen comic sensibility keeps the narrative afloat.
