Dragon War
by Laurence Yep
Harper Trophy, New York, 1992, 313pp, $4.95 (paperback)
A war between an evil human and the good Dragon Princess, as told by
Monkey, her faithful companion.
EXCERPT:
id our heroes despair?
Did Monkey dum-de-dum...
Did he even care?
No, I needed something about myself. I could fee the rhyme teasing around
in my mind as the snow sprayed upward from the runners of the makeshift
sled. Ahead of us a company of imperial guardsmen toiled through the snow,
their white cloaks flapping in the wind. The same wind picked up the
snowflakes that had been kicked up and swept them into our faces, where
they stung like dozens of little needles.
I would have given a chunk of my tail if I could have wiped the snow from
my face fur; but chains had been wrapped around me so tightly that I
couldn't even raise a pinkie, and the chains themselves had been fastened to
the huge bed of the sled.
It had to be large to accommodate the royal bulk of Shimmer, the dragon,
princess of the clan of the Lost Sea. To restore her home, we had "borrowed"
a cauldron from Shimmer's uncle, Sambar, the High King of the dragons; and
in our...uh...hasty departure, the cauldron itself had gotten broken.
Then we had accidentally let loose a wicked creature who called himself the
Boneless King. That had been bad enough, but he had been able to take over
the body of the King of the land, a cruel man aptly named the Butcher.
