A Portrait of the New Vietnam
REVIEW: GETTING REACQUAINTED
hen the U.S. fled Vietnam back in 1975, it turned its back on a nation of 75 million blessed with an abundance of resources, both natural and human. It's that very wealth that had made it such a tempting target for colonial Chinese, French and American ambitions in the first place. In 1986 Ho's communist party began capitalist reforms with the goal of revitalizing what was Asia's most promising economy back in the 19th century. Now that the U.S. has normalized relations, Vietnam will quickly regain its place as a land of promise and opportunity. This reader-friendly and timely book makes quite enjoyable the task of getting reacquainted with the inner workings of a nation and a people that will be very much on the minds of 21st century Americans.
