Note: This post is politically incorrect. I am not trying to diss anybody here, just making an observation.
As a high school student, I've noticed that a *lot* of AA are into the "hip hop rap" scene, as well as the "techno dance" scene. Now, there's nothing wrong with that. But it's actually become the "normal Asian thing" to do around here. What exactly is "Average Asian" about a kid who lives in Bayside or Flushing, perms his hair into an Afro, wears sagging pants, and even (I've actually seen this) intersperses Ebonics while he speaks Chinese/Korean?
I would believe that the Metal scene, out of the western scenes, is more suited to most Asians. Metal/rock has more Asian-American musicians than rap (Linkin Park, DragonForce, Sum41, Dream Theater et al) as well as having a large scene in Asia. (X Japan, Loudness) A lot of metal artists, such as Yngwie Malmsteen, base their music on classical tunes. Asian folks learn classical instruments as kids. I would think the heavy metal themes of alienation, conformity, and anti-authoritarianism relate more to the Asian American experience than "pimping dem hoes in the ghetto". Metalheads are also known to be thin, clad in black, with long, dark hair. Asians tend to be thin and wear a lot of black- and long hair is easier to achieve, for us, than the Afro hairdo.
The Asian metalheads I know are very culturally proud, speak fluent Asian languages, know Martial Arts, and are very Asian. The Asian Hip-hop heads tend to be more "black washed" or even "white washed". The ones I know usually date non-Asian, cannot speak Asian languages, and think the best part about their culture is the "Got Rice" song.
From my experience, Asians are also more accepted in the metal scene. One of my favorite Metal bassists is Corean, and I almost never hear the word "g**k" when non-AA talk about him. However, many non-Asians racially diss Jin Tha MC, and question his ability to rap.
Of course, there's white supremacist metalheads pissing on the scene, but black supremacist rappers tend to be more prevalent. Many rappers are openly part of the Black Muslims (not real muslims)/ 5 Percenters.
So why in the world are half of the Asian teens walking around town pretending to be on B.E.T.? And why do I only see 1 or 2 Yellow faces in the metal club?
Something to chew on.

Relax. It's a fad. They're in high school; and having fun. Trust me. I'm a high school teacher and I've seen fads come and go. Some of my former students come back to visit and they're nothing like they were in high school. They get serious when they get to college or work place. It's a different environment. Meanwhile, enjoy high school; it's the best four years of your life.

I see what Stormheller is talking about. In high school, I knew of only one Corean dude that dressed hip hop. But......he did it with his own style incorporated into his culture. He still was himself, not trying to be black or anything else. As far as the rap scene, chocolate folk need to get off of being as oppressing as the oppressor. Because you were treated badly due to the color of your skin doesn't give you the right to do the same to someone else. Especially after the world has embraced the rap scene, including asia. So I definitely disagree with rappers giving Jin the cold shoulder. And other R&B asian american singers, like Cat Kim. I wonder, would the R&B world have accepted Amerie (half Corean) so readily into their world, had her skin not been brown? I'm really sick of this racist BS. These are talented artists and they should be given the same radio play as everyone else.
I love watching and listening to bands like G.O.D., Lee Juno, Chakra, and H.OT. I also like Baby Vox, S.E.S, BoA, and 1TYM. I guess as a non-Asian, perhaps I'm a rare specimen to be so interested and intrigued by the talent of asian musicians. Oh, and I forgot to throw in Park Jiyoon. She is soooooo friggin' cool. Oh and Crystal Kay. I just love Corean videos. I even tape them for my little sister. Especially the ballad ones like ones with Kangta. Their videos really tell a story and I enjoy that. It's refreshing too see instead of seeing a bunch of girls shakin' their rumps. Though at times some asian videos duplicate this, and I really don't care for it. I like the long hair the asian musicians wear too. It's lovely to look at.

Green_Bamboo_Mountain,
I have to agree I once saw a Korean Music Video about a Photographer who gave up his eyeballs to his girlfriend that was blinded in a chemical accident in his darkroom. It was very moving. No idea who the artist was.
Taliesin Stormheller,
I think it is healthy for asian american to do a variety of things. Back when I was growing up in Queens all asian kids had to do were sing KTV and youth gangs. I've seen a few Korean/Chinese kids be hip hop fashionable. But when I talk to them in the Cafe in Flushing or Bayside, it not like they are totally brainwashed. They still have a strong identity of being asian, because Flushing has a huge infrastructure for asians.
So it not like these kids are thinking "Oh asian culture is weak, so I'm going to emulate black or white culture."
It more like "Oh these korean rap stars in asia are cool. I want to dress like them. And I'll give props to USA hip hop culture because that's what these Korean rap stars are doing."
To me that is a world of difference from the Queens I grew up in. Where you were automatically pigeonhole by the asian american community if you could not make it into the 3 specialized highschools.

I just wanna say that there is nothin' wrong with Asians liking Hip-Hop, or R&B or any of those stuff, as long as it's a true appreciation - not an attempt to be BLACK, or anything like that.
Modern Pop music as we know it today, is a western product, in particular, it is largely due to the black Americans - even the so called rock and roll music. There is nothing wrong with appreciating and enjoying other people's culture or even try to emulate it. Human societies have interacted this way for thousans of yrs. If us as Asians shouldn't do Hip-Hop, then should we ask other races to not do martial arts, or eat Chinese food,...etc. IT"S PRETTY RIDICUOLOUS. So the High school student u better think about this, kiddo.
Lastly I wanna say that, peronally I like Hip-Hop and R&B better than heavy metal, grundge, or Euro-trash dance mixes. Black people really make better music. Of course it is not to say that Asians don't make good music either, it's just a bit different, of course.

Yeah, jumbochink. I don't know what I would do without Chinese food!

I've had really traditional Chinese food too. Just can't name all of the dishes I like. There's this really cool 5 star Chinese restaurant that me and my hubby wanna go to. It's really fancy. My favorite Chinese dish is steamed shrimp dumplings. I think you call them "Har Gow" or "Ha Kao". I can eat them and just hum along while I am. Hee heee! Mmm, I can smell em now!

I agree that we should have our own culture, which was the point of my argument. What I am opposing is exactly what you oppose: the appropriation of White and Black culture by our youth.
White culture= Britney Spears and the ilk.
Black culture= the aforementioned rap kids.
Metal is a form of music that transcends culture. Blacks, Whites, Asians, etc. have all contributed in some form or another to its genesis, unlike teen pop (concocted by scandinavians) and Rap (invented by Blacks) Visual Rock and JRock *are* Asian cultures.
I don't have a problem with young brothas and sisters liking rap or whatever. It's just that a lot of them do, and I was wondering why. I'm down with the urban scene.

All I gotta say is the Voice don't have hate for ur Asian brothers and sisters here in the states. U don't know how racist it is over here and how Asians are being demeaned here. We are all trying to fight against it everyday.
Oh, also, white people are probably the least cultured people on this planet. All forms of modern pop music came from or were greatly influenced by African Americans, and that is a fact that no one should deny. U gotta give other people props for what they deserve sometimes. But for what they don't deserve u gotta refute it vehemently.

Feb 20 2004, 12:59 PM
Why the hate? Can you let people be themselves or do you gotta force them into what you think they should do? Hip hop is the good [expletive] right now. Jin is putting out hot music, his new video is nice, why are you putting him down? Rap is big in the USa, because it's not exactly as commericalized.. It came up from the streets, it has credibility. Of course, some fools are running around yellin "right thurr" which has absolutely nothing to do with street culture but it is good music. I'm 1/2 qatari, and I gotta say this: [expletive] metal. That [expletive] is for goths or some [expletive]. The things I like include rap, and j pop is absolutely the best music to listen to while racing down the streets in your car.. Asian people are doin big things in rap, and rap is becoming more culturally diverse, even though black people continue to run it. But its a good thing. U don't always gotta be #1 to be happy..

I don't get why people want to categorize other people because of what they like to listen to.
Just the other night I met this really nice Korean girl at a louge. She had red highlights and an tight curl perm. She was in some tight urban black urban wear with flares and hooded wool jacket. Now if I was to judge a book by it cover. I would assume that this chick was into raves and korean hip hop.
But after talking to her I found out she was into anime and graphic design. And didn't really like the party scene or korean hip hop. The only reason she was at the lounge was because it was spring break and her friends dragged her there.
Anyways it just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover.

Most of you live your lives as if in spite of better peoples and as if "born Asian" was something to be compared of the mentally retarded (i.e. handicapped) in an environment so not suited for you. Over the long period of Asian American history, the amount of progress is way too slow. THAT and the disproportionate greatersize of FOBs in any decade.

The Voice,
Those are all assumptions you are making. From my experience most asian feel asians are innately superior to other races in the USA. How is being the most educated and highest income ethnicity a handicapp in the USA? I think it is kind of cool asian can just come over and live the American dream. While other immigrant groups have to struggle their way up just to make a down payment.
What's wrong with the immigrant population in the USA. The immigrant population of any ethnicity is the driving force to USA culture. Without immigrants I fear USA would become like Europe and Japan, stagnant in growth.
The last point is what's wrong with entertainment and pop culture from Asia. If asians choose to become self segregated in a free country, I don't see any negative impact. Most European immigrants and black immigrants in the USA do not have that luxury of a viable and vibrant culture they can tap into other than mainstream USA pop culture.

Taliesin Stormheller,
I don't know why so many young Asians seem to like rap or dress like 50 Cent or whatever. But I do speculate that not many of them would ever get interested in metal because of a variety of factors. Metal is not popular nor is it commercialized like rap. Metal is an aggressive and complex sounding style as opposed to the party-like chanting and simplistic style of rap. Metal has been associated with negative themes such as death, destruction, and Satanism. Rap these days is all about partying and sex. Extreme hate groups like the neo-Nazis would base their white power songs on metal, not rap.
Having said all that, I love metal and hard alternative. My all-time favorite metal band is Sepultura (before they went Korn), a Brazilian speed metal band currently with an African-American lead singer. Yes, in reality metal does indeed cross racial and cultural boundaries. Slayer's frontman is an Argentine. Dream Theater has a Chinese-American bassist. Soundgarden's bassist was Indian-American. There aren't a whole lot of these examples, but they do exist and no metal or hard rock fan would diss any of these bands because of the band members' skin color.
I can corroborate your observations that there are hardly any Asians in the crowd of metal or even some hard rock concerts. I don't go to concerts much, but the last one I went to, Tool, I don't recall seeing any Asians other than myself. And this is here in the SF Bay Area. Go figure.
Anyway, to each their own.

Voice and Green_Bamboo,
What I know about Frankie J is that he was born in Mexico. As for his ethnicity, latino most likely but who knows? Still, Green_Bamboo, keep us a bit updated.
Why is Hung on this discussion forum? I just went with one girlfriend to a UC Berkeley men's volleyball game a week or so ago to only endure his lack of talent with his infamous attempt at Ricky Martin. And last I heard, he's getting a $25,000 check from Fuse music and a record offer from Koch for all that crap. He's only famous for all that and not whining about the judges verdict like most non-talented hopefuls.
Hung reminds me of Leela (the one-eyed mutant from Futurama) in one episode where is gets a multi-million dollar contract to play blurnsball, a version of major league baseball on a string) for the NY Mets. She becomes a famous female pitcher due mainly to her lack of talent and her charisma for such lack of talent. In the end, her infamy became an inspiration for other women to prove that they are not as bad if not better than she is. Yeah, Hung is an inspiration to us all.
