This may not be an Asian-American issue, maybe just an American issue. I?ve been in Brazil on project for about a month and just realized ? are we Americans just rude?
A few nights ago, I was having dinner a restaurant downstairs in the hotel I?m staying with three colleagues, all of whom are from Latin America. The ambiance was quiet and peaceful and we were talking about a project we?re on. Then we hear this conversation across the restaurant, from one end to another. They were speaking English with an obvious American accent. They didn?t bother to walk to each other, but rather continued for a matter of about 10 minutes, talking literally over our heads. All of a sudden, I realized ? is this what we do in another country?

America................... is just odd. I'd like to say that many Americans have certain mannerisms that may be rude overseas, but within our "domain", our behavior is viewed as acceptable. It's kind of like how traditional Japanese table manners (slurpping noodles, smoking cigarettes at the table) may be viewed negatively in Europe or here. I really think the US needs to clean up its act. We may be a nation with a high standard of living, but we are not the best country in the world, socially and politically saying. But then again, what country is perfect?

Americans are just rude! And it's not just because behaviors that might be acceptable in the US are unacceptable in other countries. It's because Americans are just rude! Children are not taught to have manners here. Parents no longer teach their kids social behavior that parents 30 or forty years ago taught their kids. Like the example that the first poster gave about what happened in Brazil. Traditionally that behavior is even rude in US. I just watched an episode of "The Iron Chef" on Saturday and Bobby Flay was on it. His behavior was so incredibly rude and crude and disrespectful! Good manners are dead in this country

Hmmm, I suppose if I really thought about it, I'd say American's aren't that rude... except maybe folks from the East Coast. I think they're ALL rude, and ugly too. LOL. And people from California are rude by virtue of being so stupid and clueless, y'know that liberal kind of rudeness. LOL. But overall I'd say Americans aren't too bad, I suppose. I don't think there's any kind of standard measure for the rudeness of different cultures, it all depends on what you look at: In America honking your horn is like an act of war (very rude), but in Italy people honk their horns all the time and it's no big deal (or so I've heard).

Well, Parisians are rude, Athenian Greeks are rude, Israelis are rude, Hong Kong folks are rude, and New Yorkers who are not Americans, but a class by themselves are also rude.
I remembered when I was in Greece, a bunch of Hong Kong Chinese were shouting in loud Cantonese in a nice quiet Greek eatery like it was some shabby Chinese restaurant.
Tourists can be obnoxious.
This thread stinks.

Bwahahahahah. Unless there's a few Arabs on the plane, then they run to the back like little girls.
Although I'd still say Americans are not particularly rude, American kids are... they take all these lowly influences (like urban culture and media) and use it like a perverted comfort blanky, as a sad excuse to suck their thumbs and act rude like bitchy lil' primodonnas. Otherwise they'd have nothing to hide behind, much less even remotely justify such behavior. Lamooooo Laaaaaaame. LOL. Such untermenschen.
The Germans at least have their siht straight... treat the dogs better than their kids. Children should be seen and not heard. Especially American children.

AC,
Everything has to do with local culture. Cutting in front of people when walking in NY is acceptable. Hey, remember, it's a rat race here. Try that in hicksville and u will be seen as an a-hole. I think many places and people are rude to begin wih but once u get use to it, it becomes a standard.

Besides, rudeness is subjective in the 1st place. In my view, the whole world is becoming what we know as "rude".

Why would you need to cut anybody off in hickville. There is almost nobody there to cut off.
As the world get more crowded they will see that New Yorkers knew what we were doing from the start.
We're the center of the universe for pete sakes.

Maybe we are just focusing on the assholes from communities/nations, and just making a stereotype for an entire culture/synomom for grouping. Every place has its fair share of nice people and assholes... Hehehe, the world is just one big horomonal high school with it's preps, ravers, goths, alties, punks, jocks...

AC,
Well, many NYers moving to Hicksville. Like I said and to add your point, world is becoming rude as the population grows. Soon being rude is the same as being polite. Life cheapens and everything cheapens, and maybe man thinks material wealth and status are petty.

Hmmm, not always. Certain cultures and peoples seem to do just fine at high population densities... The Dutch, the Germans, Japanese, etc. But try packing other people in like sardines and ya have quite an explosive mixture (Americans *cough* Africans *cough*). Some folks compress better than others.
On top of that you have American's trying their hardest to export very bad cultural habits to other countries... no doubt in an attempt to leave America's competition in ruins, one way or another.

Ahhh, yes, like boiling a frog very slowly, so it won't jump out until it's too late... Humans are no different to such acclimation of their surroundings.

On school trips to Europe there would be a big emphasis on us being polite, so there weren't any problems with us, really. Ironically, we found European tourists to be just horrible. There would be spanish tourists yelling expletives to try communicating with us, french tourists taking pictures of artwork to piss off museum patrons, and english tourists marveling that "the japanese are EVERYWHERE OMG".

If "outspoken without limits" can be regarded as rude. I'd say yes.
But most probably this seems more common in America because there are more outspoken ppl. So I can't blame American's entirely!

I would say that rudeness is more a function of social class than nationality. Most of the truly rude people I've run into tended to be of the lower classes.
Within American society, I've found that Californians seem to be more polite than others. The rudest people I've ever encountered were when I spent a summer in New Jersey with my aunt. Man, those people would comment on just about anything, from a blemish on your face, to the shoes you were wearing, even to the food you were eating! It wasn't especially good-natured, either - half the time, I felt they were trying to goad me into a fistfight or something.

Im not AMerican so sorry. But I have a question. Why do American people talk TOOO much??? Like they have many many words to say, but its all meaningless and petty talk. For example at the International Airport if American, especially WHite Americans, sit next to me they reveal all their personal information, like marital status, childred, diseases, illness, divorces, etc,,AND they also want to know all your personal information and ask personal questions... bla bla bla..... then when the flight is over... and you get off the plane, then you see them again in the terminal... but they igonore you like they forgot about you and dont want to talk to you any more???

whadapp wof dat shi*t huh??? Why Americans dump their personal information to strangers, and pretend to be friendly and pretend to be interested in you, but really they just dumping their mental stress on you!!

thats sooooooooo rude and disgusting! My advice is NEVER talk to Americans at the Airport or in the Plane!

Americans know nothin about foreign [expletive] but they like to ask it like they are the [expletive]ing best or somethin. Sometimes it's annoyin when they try to copy other culture. Ya know it's a kinda offensive. Because they don't belonged to any culture. They only belonged to pop culture [expletive]. I'm sure American kids are rude. They like to copy some [expletive] they know nothing about from everywhere and act it like an idiot. Those kids are faggot, and I jumped on them several times cause they called me to "open my eyes", "Kochiecao"(copyin cantonese), or ask me "is it the biggest eyes you can make?". I don't care, I just beat them up.

Jatan. I agree with u. Asians cry the way too much. They don't know how to enjoy their life and pay attention on this kind of tiny [expletive]. I read a lot of postings from u guys. A lot of hatings and tiny [expletive]. Damn why u guys always hate so much and so sensitive? I don't even give a [expletive] about it when I see this kinda thang. Some of you guys are really not suitable for 21st century.
