Jackie Chan is the clown prince of martial arts while Jet Li is the cool deadly revenge machine. Admittedly neither is exactly the ideal well-rounded image for Asian men. But which actor is doing more to correct the stereotypes with which we have been plagued in other Hollywood movies?

hopefully, without sounding too trite I think both would be helpful. it would be like saying who is better for african american image denzel or eddie murphy. bill cosby or cedrik sp? the entertainer. if there is a larger presence of AM in the media from clown to prince, we'll all start being judge for our indiviual merit instead of that cat in sixteen candles.

well i like em both. and i guess as far as portraying a good image for asian males it depends. they both frequently play in martial arts films which is one big stereotype with the asian race, that you all know martial arts. at the same time they both do it in different ways which does make it quite pleasurable. unlike most americans i watched Jet Li and Jackie Chan's films from Hong Kong, before they blew up over here in the states. i began watching their movies not based on their race or martial arts, but that they play in action/adventure films. and that's my favorite kind of movies.
oh and my answer to Ed's question, is Jet Li, in my opinion.

Well, first of all, there is no replacement for Bruce Lee. Not that these 2 are trying to do that, but the kung fu icons and hong kong martial arts stars are a thing of the past.
My prediction is that these 2 kung fu stars may be the last of a dying breed; unless, they bring back Sonny Chiba's old flicks back to the screen (hahahahaha)....
I really don't see a renaisance of a Bruce Lee after life. These last 2 stars of kung fu, hopefully, will be the last so that asians can show real drama in theatres across america utilizing non-kung fu special effects....

Haa. I agree RalphieMyBoy. Supposedly Jackie Chan is having an upcoming movie sometime in the near future where he won't be jumping and kicking all over the place. That stuff is played out in my book. Don't know the name of it yet. He said it will be a strictly drama-romance story. Cause America loooooooooves to stereotype asian actors into playing a "kung fu phooey" role 9 times outta 10. I saw Jason Scott Lee in that Dracula: The Ascension movie. He was airight, but the movie didn't have any "umph". I know he could of done better. But it was still nice to see him in such a different movie. Well, he wasn't necessarily "kung fu phooey" in Jungle Book. Makes you look at Mogley differently I tell you. hee hee Well, hopefully, it'll change soon. Cause I know lots of asian stars in this country are tired of playing stereotypical parts. Guess they are also looking at those bills, bills, bills. Cause it's really dumb if you think of it. What you see on the movie screen doesn't reflect how most asians are. It's always an extreme. They are either portrayed as the evilest scum of the earth,a wimpy nerd, or a psycho kung fu dude. I get a taste of stupendous asian drama and I love it. But just don't see it here in this country on the big screen.

Again, as I have said elsewhere, just let Jet Li and Jackie Chan be who they are: great Chinese (Asian) actors whom we Chinese(Asians) admire. None of them are Americans, and yes both speak funny English because they are NOT American. Yes Jackie Chan is at times wacky because that's his Hong Kong comedy style. Yes Jet Li is cool and serious because he is a Shaolin Kung Fu master, not from LA Gym or some sh*t like dat. The boy is for real. Stop worrying about how Hollywood would think about us. Our job is to diss Hollywood, not suckin* its toes.

If any of you people out there that chose either Jackie Chan or Jet Li over the other in terms of answering the question "who would win in that fight?" ....you are stupid. IF YOU DO NOT PRACTICE OR UNDERSTAND THE MARTIAL ARTS IN ANYWAY, THEN YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DECIDE WHO WOULD WIN IN THAT FIGHT. Come on guys, you are pathetic. Just because on guy does a different style of martial arts than the other DOES NOT mean he or she will win a fight. THERE IS NO MARTIAL ART THAT IS BETTER THAN ANOTHER. PERIOD. In reality, all martial arts are very important. Each art has its own style which makes it unique. This would also include submission fighting, (ex: UFC, K-1, PRIDE, etc) So what if Jet does wushu, that doesn't make him any more deadly than Jackie Chan. So what if Chan practices a variety of martial arts and is probably a more "realistic" fighter. That doesn't make him any more better than Jet. In martial arts, there should be no comparison like that...it is ridiculous
This question shouldn't even be asked, because to an actual martial artist,...it is really sad. MARTIAL ARTS IS NOT ABOUT FIGHTING AND BEATING UP PEOPLE. it is a way of life, a way to define oneself. So people, get your facts straight about the martial arts before you even start thinking about this ridiculous question.
They both suck as Asian male role models.
Of course their action abilities are insane. Especially Jackie Chan is like the action god of the world. But we already had the media kung-fu king with Bruce Lee. It's 30 years later, and we still haven't seen much else for Asian men. Ok, everybody gets the message. Asian chop-socky kicks ass.
Can me move on now? What saddens me is that the highest-profile Asians in America (if that's what these two are) aren't even American. Y'know what would be mind-blowing?
To see an Asian American man portrayed as just a regular good dude. NO WAY!!! And if you really want to get crazy, give him an Asian American woman who is portrayed as just a regular hot woman. OH MY GOD!!!
An Asian American couple? Existing in media land as just a normal, happy, loving, beautiful couple? GET OUTTA HERE!!! Sure blacks get that privilege now. ALL THE TIME! Even latinos. But what makes you silly Asians think you rate that high? Obviously nothing, BECAUSE I STILL DON'T SEE IT HAPPENING.

i would say jackie chan is a better actor than jet li. jet li has only one expression and jackie can act all happy-go-lucky. but i have to say if bruce lee is still around .....he would be the man among the 3. bruce lee acting talent need no doubt plus his physique would be considered more desirable by females. and not to mention his incerdible good looks.
