Kristin Kreuk has quickly become one of the hottest young actresses on TV by playing Lana Lang in Smallville. The fact that her mother is of Malaysian Chinese descent makes her something of a female Keanu Reeves -- a popular actor with an indeterminate Asian flavor. How do you see her?
Hank Lewis
This will sound like a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway: huh.gif

How do you pronounce her last name: Kroyk, Kruck, Krook, Krayuk? Anybody know???
ariark
huh seriously her mother is an Malaysian Chinese descent huh.gif oh i didnt know that...she never expose about her background....
kristinkreuk
I am very proud of my asian heritage thankyou very much!
I don't know how else to 'present' myself, especially as an actress portraying Lana Lang.

Much love to all my fans! =)
honeyroasted
kristinkreuk,

huh, is that really you?
ariark
wink.gif hah i dont think its her...just not impossible....
scarygreengiant
dry.gif Nah. It's not her. If you click on her profile it says that her age is in the "under 17" category.

I find the resistance to Kristen shown in the poll strange. As a born and raised Asian Canadian(all japanese), I know I indicate to people that I'm aware of my heritage. But I know that to a great degree, as generations root into their North American homestead and other races mixes into their bloodlines, it just becomes more and more difficult to hang on to that part of your heritage. This isn't from experience; I'm second generation but I think that anyone can infer this. Like it or not, if it's in your blood and as a celebrity, if it shows, they become a representation of the asian or "not-quite-caucasian" part of the media. And as a young actress, I think Kristin has little voice in how much she wants to show any "asianness" thru the media.
I see no need to campaign for a racial cause just because you happen to be famous. Whether you just got off the plane or you're "barely asian", you're just who you are. The degree of westernness versus asianness that you have is part of your essence as a person too, and no one has a right to criticize what you're made of. smile.gif
Hank Lewis
I finally found out the pronunciation of her name--it was used in an interview on WB 39 News last night--it's "CREW-eck." Man, those Netherlands people pronounce their vowels kind of funny... (JUST KIDDING!!!)
ex_crusader
kristin kreuk? yeah she's pretty, and she's an asian-american. the very first time i saw her in my brother's desktop wallpaper, i thought of her as PURE chinese and wondered how she got in to most beautiful blah blah in the world, til i found out she was actually chinese/dutch, raised in canada. well u people of america, are you kind of blind or what? do you not see her VERY ASIAN FEATURES like her eyes? to kristin, aren't you proud of your asian ethnicity? don't you think your chinese mom contribute a lot to your physical appearance? if not of that chinese blood, you wouldn't look like that, be thankful you came out pretty because of a good mix! besides, about that "she admitted she's a canadian blah blah... and that she's not admissive or proud or whatever that she's half asian", why the hell in the first place she auditioned for laurel yeung?? which perhaps she knew was an asian-american character... if she actually knew, then, she must have admitted she was asian-american even to herself only. if she's afraid of the judgmental and mean eyes of americans that's why she didn't admit she was a-a, then she's not someone for asians to be proud of!!! I'm proud of Lucy Liu, and Michelle Branch who both admit their asian ethnicity (and others that do). To JAPANESE_AND_PROUD, michelle branch is half indonesian! but, anyways, i still admire kristin bec. of her beauty and acting, i'd neglect this issue after i post this.
chinatown
michelle branch is only 1/4 indonesian!!!
Average Korean
Hopefully as she matures she realizes she needs to see both sides of who she is.

And I don't see her "discover" her Asianness once her careers fades.
autumnmarie
I think this is getting rediculous.
You have a poll now for whether or not you should "CLAIM KRISTIN AS AN ASIAN AMERICAN."

Well, let me tell you this. SHE IS NOT AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!
and she is NOT only ASIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is ignorance.
You are ignorant for REFUSING to acknowledge that she IS CANADIAN.
SHE WAS BORN AND IS LIVING< AND WANTS TO ALWAYS LIVE IN VANCOUVER.

There should not be a huge deal made if Kristin does not want to say, 'Oh yes I am asian, " because nor is she out there saying, 'Oh yes I am Dutch." She is saying, she is CANADIAN. But, if you ask KRISTIN her "ETHNICITY" she will tell you, half DUTCH and HALF Chinese. So she has no shame in her ethnic background. She just does not see a world where ethnicity really matters, because that is what SEPERATES people in this world, when we are like, "Well you're this.. " or "you're that."

She is a mature young woman, and I think she is bright for not claiming to be Asian, only. Because if she were doing that it would seem - and probably would be, a gimmic.

[SIZE=14]ONCE AGAIN, I REPEAT. SHE IS CANADIAN.
So if she were to be claimed by ANYONE it should be CANADIANS not AMERICANS.
sugarmui
Kristin is half Chinese?? I read from a magazine that she's of Native Indian blood from Canada!!
Hank Lewis
Nope. According to her own website, she's Chinese-Dutch Canadian.

At any rate, she isn't just Asian, she does have other ethnic backgrounds in there. Let's not forget the "1 drop of blood rule" was invented by White racists who were trying to disinclude Mixed people who looked White from positions of power and to deny them the right to vote, hold certain jobs, etc. Trying to write her as "only" Caucasian or "only" Asian because you think her Caucasian father somehow "cancels out" her Chinese mom or vice versa is a very racist thing to do.

My Daughter Helena is Chinese-Scottish-Swedish American, and I am damned proud of her. I am going to make sure she is raised to be damned proud of her total package and to regard how she sees herself is a hella lot more important than how demagogues who claim to speak for the "Asian community" or the "White community" want to see her. blink.gif
thicker-than-blood
oh, yes i remember who Kristen is. when i first saw her, i recognized her "asianess" immediately. i found her a very pretty girl. and viewed her as a wonderful actress.

even Michelle Branch. i have a built in "asianess" radar. it goes off when i see people that fit the radar like Kristen or Michelle and other asians mixed or not that don't fit the stereotypical "asian face". other asians seem to detect an essence of asian in me, even though i'm not asian. they sometimes take a double take on me or come up to me and talk and what not. sometimes i get a nod as they pass by. it's all cool. that's the beauty of the human race. for example, Mark Dacascos is Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Irish & Portuguese , and he is one of my favorite actors too.

Funny thing about media hapas like Kristin - they're half-white and half-Asian. Problem is you will only ever see them paired with white male partners, never an Asian one (even in shampoo commercials). Like sell-out whore mother, like sell-out whore daughter. I'm glad people don't know she's Asian. Like we need another high-profile Asian whore who's only sexually available to whites.
KKP
The other funny thing is I had a girlfriend in '02 who looked just like Kristin. The only reason I even know who Kristin Kreuk is, is because people kept saying my girlfriend looked like her. The twist is, my girl in reality would rather puke than date white guys. But you won't ever see that image portrayed on TV. All you see, and thanks to pawns like Kristin, all you will continue to see, is white self-promotion.
KKP
That's RACIST. And it's way past time that b.s. changed, which is why I'm going into media myself.
JimmyinDC
Kristin's cute.
eddietam
In answer to Kristen's last name pronouncement.. It's pronounced like "Luke" except with a "Kr" in front of the "uke".

and I agree with the korean american model/actress' response.. in the original thread.

..come-on now she's just acting.. it's just a role.. it's not the real her.. the role is scripted not by her but by white directors, script writers, and producers. if you have to blame someone, blame them.

cheers =)

her parents played a huge gamble. It payed off though.

Movies7778

Its just a business guys.

Anyone who's a film major like I am
knows that the Film is unconsciously
racist.

You must understand that most of
the people who pay for movie tickets
are WHITE MALES, thus it's only understandable
that their fantasies be fullfilled whether it's getting
the girl or being the hero. White males
are the target in Hollywood.

For instance even in a Samurai Film like "THE LAST
SAMURAI" there's a white character which is Tom Cruise's
character. The historical Last Samurai was Japanese.
He wasn't white... Why did they do that? ...To attract the
white male audience.

Peace....
warratah01
What about white women who may feel insecure about themselves? ohmy.gif
Movies7778

Good Question, but the majority of people who pay for tickets are
men.
Kathie
I don't think that just because you are mixed you have to advertise it to the world. I have never heard her deny her dual heritage...I think she is proud of who she is. Besides, even when you have parents from different ethnicities, if you are born in the US or Canada and have grown up there, in the end you turn out being more American or Canadian (depending on the case) than anything else, because whether you want it or not that is your culture.
Besides, I don't know if any ethnic group can claim an actor/actress just because of their ethnicity, because after all their success is only theirs...and it is unfair to judge someone solely on their features.
When I came to college (I am mixed, about 1/4 hispanic and 3/4's white or so =P ) I was frequently asked why I did not join the hispanic student association or such sorority, etc, but I don't want to define myself by my background...I feel that it is not good to label myself...I want people to like me for being who I am and not for what race I'm from. So far I have friends from every background (chinese, japanese, mexican, white, black) and I like them for who they are and not for their ethnicity.
I think it is the same way with Kristin or any one else, she doesn't have to yell to the world that she's half-chinese just so she doesn't hurt anybody's feelings.
pearlcityguy
i vote for "no, because she is only half asian"
jumbochink
Why can't mixed people claim that they are both their mom's and dad's ethnic group. I don't see any contradiction in that. That's what they are: they are BOTH. As far as seeing Kristin or any other supposedly "Asian" actresses being paired of with white men, well, maybe one day if we controlled the media we'll have every woman from every race be paired with us.

biggrin.gif
Kathie
Maybe I did not explain myself very well, sorry about that...I never said that she couldn't claim that she is both (if it's me you're responding to, anyway =D)...she is both and that's the end of the story, what I was trying to say is that just becuase you have a certain background (asian, in this case) I don't think you have to make a big deal out of it...or let others make a big deal out of it. I think she is smart in remaining neutral and not claiming one or the other, but claiming BOTH and presenting herself just as Kristin, because that's who she is. Anyway, hope that cleared up some things. ~ Katherine.
jumbochink
BTW Katherine, that last post was not intended towards you.

I got a question though, do you guys think that Americans(especially non-Asian Americans) consider pure Asian women more attractive or mixed Asian women. You know, I am just wondering cuz I know there are all these guys with Asian fetish. So I wonder whether they think mixed Asian girls are "less exotic" or whatever... Interesting question I think.

Personally, I think in most cases mixed Asian girls are more attractive than pure Asian ones, although a girl can definitely be very attractive being just Asian alone.

cool.gif
Clouded_Yoda

Good question. It depends. You can find really classic beauties in pure Asian American. They're so fine! And fortunately enough, American's pure Asian beauty standard is nowhere near it. Bwahahah, we (AM) keep all the pretty ones. laugh.gif

Mixed Asian can be very pretty too. I haven't encountered them though. Usually they tend to seem too strong for me, like the other extreme of the shy AF. I don't look for submissive women, but I don't want a feminist bully either. I'm a person who can be controlled only by ppl who respects me. But as always, there are exceptions.
rolleyes.gif
BoonDockerz
Mixed Asian chicks look hot to me. They look exotic.
PLA
She is Canadian born.

Why are we discussing if she can claim to be asian American? She can't claim to be American, period.

As for mixed race people, their genotype does not dictate their nationality.

Is she Asian? Depends on your definition but I can tell you she is a homosapien, which is good enough for me.

asian_md
I think that she is an asian actress, but she qualifies as this new breed of asian actress that would never even think about going out with an asian man sad.gif I am a big fan of Kristin Kreuk, and am consistently upset that she's always being cast alongside goofy caucasian guys as her Love Interests. Jensen Ackles... what a jackass. Puleease. In this category of sellout asian girls, you can pretty much put every other asian-american actress today. For example, I dont watch ER anymore because every week Ming Na is cast alongside a different black dude, or doopey white guy... not to mention that all of the asian males on that show are either gay nurses, or orderlies (yeah, quite realistic there). Anywho, getting back on topic, also in this category, Lisa Ling (who married a white dude), Lucy Liu (total sellout), Kelly Hu (who married a HOCKEY player), and pretty much every other prominent asian american actresses. How about that asian girl who dated Ross on Friends. WTF was that all about? Oh, and dont even get me started on movies like "the transporter" or "the last samurai".
Being an Asian Man who was born in this country, I think that we are facing a crisis. ABC's, as we are called, are the least lucky guys on the planet. Hollywood, through its negative stereotypes, has made us completely undesireable to any female raised in America. Not only that, but they have made it seem as if asian girls dont even want to date asian guys. I think that hollywood, and the attitudes perpetuated by asian actresses and "the man" has created a soceity where the hottest asian american girls would much rather date a dorkey white dude who wears a "vote for pedro" t-shirt, or even a mexican or black dude before they "lower" themselves to going out with an asian. Think about it... how many times have you seen a non- fobby asian dude score with some chick in a movie? four? five? I can count that number on my left hand, which is good, because I need my right hand free for something else, as do most asian guys, because we just aint gettin any. You can call me lame, or chauvanistic, or moronic. Whatever, all american born asians guys know what Im talking about. let's continue the fight.... go to My Webpage
alriteyougotme
Too bad we only have one choice to vote for. I consider her Asian because she looks Asian, she is half Asian and embraces her Asian side (she is going to play Chun Li in an upcoming movie).
