"I will not be so protective, I will not be so jealous, I will not be too flirtatious with other women, I will not be attracted by my friend's girlfriend."

Q: Who is everybody?
A: It wasn't so much my parents and friends. They were very supportive. It's the industry itself. They say it without saying it. They would never say it directly to you, but there's a stigma. It's like the way that women actors are much less expensive than male actors, it's the same with minorities. There are great actors out there, like James Shigeta, Mako--they're old-timers, they're terrific actors. But what they have paid, compared to the Caucasian actors... it doesn't come close.

Q: How important was the notion of financial success in your motivation to do this?
A: I didn't do it for the money, but I knew that the rewards are great if you can deliver. I wanted to do a job the best I could, and I knew that if I put my whole heart and passion into something, then the money is automatic. If I did it for the money, I would have been making the wrong decision.

Q: So you never had images of fast cars and swimming pools and mansions and beautiful women, that wasn't part of your motivation?
A: Of course that was part of my motivation. Absolutely, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't. When we were boys, we'd get into fights in school. It's Mother Nature's way, you can't avoid it. It's part of growing up. Why do boys fight, why do kids do the things they do? A lot of it is because of the opposite sex, whether it's showing off for them or trying to get their attention. Kids do things, they do stupid things, to try to attract the opposite sex.
I have experimented with drugs, I have... I've never lived a very straight life, I've ventured off. So I can understand that a man is not fully a man unless he has gone through a certain crisis in his life, faced certain challenges in his life. Such as women. I think a man has to go through a lot of relationships to truly understand what a woman is, and even then it's still hard. Getting into fights is part of being a man. Taking risks, getting drunk, what have you. When you go through all that, and you do stupid things like getting into fights and getting drunk and throwing up in your car, whatever it is, you come out of it experienced. You learn from it. Then you get to choose, this is good, this is bad, I'm going to do this, I'm not going to do this. This is how I'm going to treat a woman now, I will not be so protective, I will not be so jealous, I will not be too flirtatious with other women, I will not be attracted by my friend's girlfriend.

Q: Are those things you've learned from personal experience?
A: Yes.

Q: How many relationships did you have before you got married, I mean fairly long-term relationships?
A: I was not exposed to Asian women until later in life. I dated women out of my race, basically. It wasn't because I didn't want to date Asian women, it's because I was not exposed to them. There were none where I grew up.

Q: Where did you go to high school?
A: I went to Fairfax High [in Los Angeles].

Q: There were probably a lot of Jewish students going to school there at that time, right?
A: Right.

Q: So what kind of women did you date in high school?
A: I dated a lot of different women.

Q: When did you lose your virginity?
A: I think I was about 16.

Q: Who was it with?
A: I'd rather not say [laugh].

Q: Was she Jewish or Caucasian or black or Hispanic? What?
A: I don't want to say something that would have repercussions on my life. Let's leave it at that. PAGE 5
