Dim Sum Girl;
You definitely hit the nail on the head. I am an oriental girl (oops should that be "asian girl") living in Canada. I have a lot of black friends (both male and female) and they dont like to be called "African Canadian" or "African American" for that matter; even though that's the politically correct thing to do in the USA. They like to be called "Black" and that is the term that is most commonly used in Canada. I think Canada's multicultural tolerance allows for the use of words like "oriental" and "black" without any derogatory baggage or bad perception.

Jennifer,
Sorry babe, but I think YOU'RE the one that sounds all bitter and insecure. Just read what you wrote.

jennifer, you really should examine your thinking more carefully. This being an AF/WM forum doubtless there's going to be some AM haters posting in here some vituperative garadge. Now you take that to make a blanketing statement that all AM are narrow-minded. Since I'm an AM I'll take that personally and state that you are either really stupid (can't reason well) or just a sell-out at heart. I've known AF/WM couples who are accepted by AM and when WM actually marry AF they marry into the family by the way. Unless of course you are ashamed of your own Asian family and seek to be saved by some sterotypical white dude. Who says that Asian men, especially us American born ones cannot be 'some of the most open-minded, progressive, and supportive men? I for one believe in that as a positive male identity and live by it. by the way i'm not bitter just saddened that there are some AF who have decided that Asian men are inferior to white men. totally your loss sister. Lastly I accept AF/WM couples like any other but as a humanist find it hard to tolerate the couples that exist in which the AF despises her ethnic heritage and the WM is some kinda savior. Jeezus straight outta some low grade hollywood flick where WM are always the hero and AM wimpy and asexual.
Lastly Jennifer, maybe the Asian guys in your age bracket - guessing late 20's to mid 30's are more narrow-minded. Maybe that is so since they came before us younger fellas (late teens/early 20's) who haven't had to experience as much racism at they. Being exposed to white racism surely would lead to bitterness and that in turn would be exacerbated by seeing AF/WM couples. I for one though, see AF/WM couples as normal since we Asians are small in numbers in the US and AM/WF couples are rapidly approaching the same numbers.

jessica-i'm with you, i think that there are lot of great interracial relationships out there but some relationships are really for the wrong reasons. anyway, honestly, i'm korean (or at least i look it) and i really don't mind being called oriental, it has a ring to it that almost sounds like valuable. perhaps it's just me, but some of these things we just need to let go. okay who cares if someone calls you oriental, or if you say white and black, not EVERYONE means it in a racial way. i can understand if the person is meaning to be racist, but if we keep getting affended at every little thing then we are going to end up living our lives in hate. sorry for the little sermon:)
