WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Jessica, I read your post and it got me thinking.
I think we all need to make a final descision on what really qualifies as a 'fetish'. Please understand that I am neither defending nor promoting relationships based on ethnic 'preferences' with the following comments. I'd like to think of it as an objective analysis of others, and myself.
I am an Asian male, and I've been strongly attracted to white women all my life (I'm in my early twenties). But curiously, my biggest crushes and successful relationships have been with women of color (Asian, black, hispanic, mixed race women). So even if my 'ideal' of a women is a 5'7" brunette/blonde with green eyes and long legs, does the fact that I also find individual women of other races highly attractive remove me from the unflattering company of those 'slimy fetishist bastards'? I'm not sure... in fact I'm actually confused about this.
It's clear to me that roughly 75% of the time, I find myself noticing white women more than other women. I obviously have a strong attraction to white women (some people call it a preference, but that's like comparing women to your favorite cereal or brand of condoms... weird.), and I'll venture to say that social conditioning as well as peer group association helped to form my attraction to WFs. Does my strong ethnice preference mean that I have a fetish? Hard to say.
On the other hand, I agree with your ideas on ignorance and fetishes, and thinking about it brought up another question. Whenever I see a hot WF, my first thought isnt whether or not she is white, but how pretty she is or how gracefully she carries herself. Same goes for AFs and to some degree Latinas. But then, some reflection on my interactions with black women helped drive your idea home. I rarely interact with black women due to the fact that my lifestyle (and to a degree, social class) doesn't encourage regular encounters with black people. Therefore I am ignorant to a large degree about them as real people with feelings, problems and joys in their lives. I sometimes find myself turned on by black women because of their way they are represented in the media, which frankly, are the only images of black women which I receive on a daily basis. They are depicted as party girls, hoes, skanks, and b*tches. As a red-blooded male, this releases sirens in the most primal part of my brain. I find myself turned on in their presence for some inexplicable reason (of course, the black female individual has to be attractive for me to be turned on). So therefore I guess my reactions to BFs qualify as a fetish in your book. However, I am least attracted to BFs out of all the races. Well, that's not true. I find black women in Europe (esp. Eithiopian women and black women from the UK) VERY sexy, with the accents and femininity.
Woah... I'd better take it easy for now. I hope my rambling made some sense. Just got back from a Laker victory party, so I'm just that little extra bit drunk. So right now I'm just suckin' on a wine-cooler so help bring me down easy. Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts on my post sometime. Take care.

Cindy
>Should I chase after asian men who >don't show any interest in me just in >the name of racial unity?
Sure Cindy...for example: if you're Filipino and were raised in New York, you absolutely *must* have more in common with a Vietnamese man (who speaks little English and who just moved to the US last year)... than with the WM, BM and Latino men you grew up with. Right??????????

Cindy....Jessica,
maybe we should all agree to stop using the f-word!
i remember that program too. i guess it shows that some elements of superficial attraction are very ingrained
so why am i as a white guy attracted to asian gals?....well i guess a place to start is my close friends....some of them are AF's and we get on just fine.....we seem to have the same outlook on life and always have something to talk about....it's not like i am being a sociologist with them....the question of culture rarely comes up but we can always poke fun at rice rockets or white trash in the same sentence....i guess i find that because they have adapted to another culture AF's are more worldy (plus there is an undeniable physical attraction which i hope is mutual!) which fits in nicely with my own experience.....but this is not all AF's but i think there is a greater proportion who have the looks and smarts than for WF's.....i suppose i'm hoping that the good vibes i have with AF's in a platonic sense will translate into something a bit more serious than that.
