WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Pam,
Meeting my husband's family was actually pretty easy. My husband had just moved back home temporarily after living out of state, so he and his mom were a package deal at first lol. Our second date he had me over to their house, where he cooked me dinner - she left for the greater part of the evening, but I did have opportunity to chat some with her. My husband reassured me that she seemed to genuinely like me, which helped to dispel the fears I may have had.
I found just being honest and respectful, and showing her the qualities that won over my husband were my easiest route to approval.
Because my husband's father has been dead 18+ years, I cannot speculate on what it would have been like meeting him, or the complexities of that.
I met all his brothers and their families over the course of the next few months, and I think the only degree of intensity came about not because of the Asian/ White factor, but simply because " he is SERIOUS about her!!" I think everyone thought my husband would forever remain single.
The people I worked with wondered whether I needed to know how to use chopsticks right away, did I have to bow when I met his mom....those types of things. I just had to laugh. Never was there any pressure on me to be other than I am , and to just be willing to accept the customs and culture of my husband's family with grace. Naturally, I am attracted to the Asian culture - it's part of my being married to my husband - so there was no problem with that.

I think age can play a big factor in a relationship. It really depends on the person. Something such as age is not that big a deal in some relationships. I personally prefer a woman who is a bit younger than myself. Maybe someone around 1 or 2 years age difference. I dont think I would date someone younger than that. I definitely would not date a woman alot older than me. Its just something I have never thought about doing.

I don't see what's the problem about approaching girls of any race. I think it's mostly in your heads. I've noticed that the same approach that I use to hit on asian women works just fine on whites or hispanics, and that approach is BE MY FREAKING SELF. And yes, I had to grow up in a place where me and my brother were the only asians in town.

My personal opinion-
I view virginity as a good thing. I admire a man who is willing to wait until he is ready. It shows that he is able to express self control within himself. I just thinks its really nice. Its also nice when a man isn't as well, because he has experience. I view both as having good strong points. Both have their advantages.
Chris (poet/warrior)-
I also want to comment on the asian men maybe feeling less attractive...due to the media's over emphasizing the WM as being so great. I think its crazy, because AM have it going on! I mean, they just have this thing about them that none of the other men can compete with. I just think their great. I am in a deep relationship with an AM and I absolutely adore him. I don't think I would ever go back to dating WM. Theres a thing about AM, being gentle but not in a feminine sense. There is this spiciness about them...like colorful and very charming...yet, there is this cool collective things about AM...like a smooth-sleek way...
LOL! Its hard to put into words sometimes! So please don't laugh! I am an artist and my boyfriend teases me about the way I describe things sometimes! So it may come off a bit eccentric! LOL!!!!

Hi Elizabeth L, been on the net for 7 years, never posted anything but strange forces are at work compelling me to answer your question. 1. just found this site, 2. never home on Mondays, 3. Haven't seen "My Three Sons" since I was kid and here are 2 episodes, one on Asian/Caucasian relationships, and the the other on a fear that the Dad was going to marry a much younger woman. If only these strange forces would send me the Lotto numbers.
I don't think Age is any more an issue with Asians than other cultures. It's more individual choice. And much to my regret, it does matter to me. 2 weeks ago a bunch of friends and I went to Culture Club. I was the only Asian, the rest were Italian, Irish, and Jewish. Male and female. One brought a friend who also brought a friend. A beautiful Turkish girl. I was totally smitten, real exotic (and to think, some people think we're exotic), never been interested in girls from that background, but Holy Crap she's beautiful and way cool.
We seemed to hit it off, Danced all night, bumping and grinding, ass grabbing. It was turning out to be a good night. Then I found out she's 22 D-OH!!
Well Elizabeth, I'm *a-hem* a little older. (Hint, when you were a freshman in high school, I was a senior...now where did I put my cane?). So I backed off. My friends thought I lost my mind.
The girls were like Dan, she's all over you, are you crazy? The guys all wanted to knock some sense into me. But to me Age is a big thing. If I say "Stairway To Heaven" I want her to answer Led Zeppelin. I'm not sure she would.
Elizabeth, you hint about the possible peer pressure your BF may be facing, I'm getting it from the opposite end. The people I hung out with that night are friends from the gym. I don't know if you know NYC, but we're from BayRdige/Bensonhurst/Dyker Heights the Testosterone Capital of the World. Needless to say I have been taking it up the butt (FIGURATIVELY!!!!) A friend who is a bit older than me and didn't make it that night actually grabbed me by the reception area and shouted "you idiot! Don't you know that younger girls are what us older guys fantasize about!!" That brought down the house.
Admittedly the crap I have been getting tends towards the jovial and rather lighthearted, but you know that old saying "Many a truth is said in Jest". The pressure you seem to be facing seems more serious. And starting rumours like what you heard is downright mean and vindictive.
I made the right decision for me (I think?) Your BF is obviously serious about you, meeting parents in most Asian (well, definetly Chinese) Societies is tantamout to a contractual obligation for marriage (well, a slight exaggeration but you know what I mean) and he took you to meet his "friends". He cares about you and so, he has made the right decision for him. Best wishes :)
p.s. Any late 20's to mid 30's AF or WF in Bayridge??? :)

Chris Poet/Warrior- your post about Cinemax had me laughing out loud! That's awesome. It reminds me of the movie "The Lover", have you seen it? It's about a high-school girl in Shanghai I believe that has an affair with an older Chinese man. WOW is that a steamy movie!!! And I think it's quite a good portrayal of an AM.

Who cares? Go out with anyone you wish too. I'm asian, I don't have any problems with women of any ethnicity and I CAN'T STAND whining asian dudes about how f***ed up their love life is. Stop bitchin and go work out or something, ya slobs.

I just met a really pretty WF yesterday at the park. She had the most beautiful big green eyes. I think she must have hypnotized me, because all day I couldn't stop thinking about her.
I forgot to get her name and number. I was too busy staring. I hope I run into her again at the park.

Chris (Poet/Warrior):
You dorkus. Those shows are like over five years old. The production company that makes that crap isn't no Zalman King and it was a crap soft core porn series directly for that channel. Man dude quit putting up lame posts.
