WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
When I was kid, Filipinos went around calling themselves Hispanic.
Why is it only now, I see Filipinos identifying themselves as Asian?

"taiwanese started all these asian gangs in U.S......"
Haha... whatever, dude. Taiwanese are one of the last to come into the picture. The gang history in the Bay is a lot like NYC. Back in the day, The Continentals were a Toi San gang that got together because they were oppressed by whites or Americanized Chinese. In the 60's, the world famous Wah Ching and their nemesis, Joe Boys, were formed. Who could ever forget the Golden Dragon Massacre? In the 80's and 90's, Jackson Street Boys, and Toi San Jai after that.
Furthermore, Toi San were the first in America. They mined the gold. They built the railroad. They built the Chinatowns. All you Asians would probably not be here if it wasn't for Toi Sans.

Latino re: "The Solution" and Filipinos
Are you kidding yourself? Filipinos are the ones always saying they are not Asian, it is not us giving them a hard time. They are the ones who despise their asianness. And it is them who claim to be racially Hispanic. If there is anyone who dislikes Filipinos more than us it is the Latinos. They see Filipinos as Asians with an inferiority complex who strive to be latinos and whites. We see them as Asians with a superiority complex who strive to be acquitted from their so self-despised asianness.
They don't want to be classified as Asians because they hate the idea of it after being fed centuries of Spanish colonial mentality, even though more than 96% of Filipinos are unmixed malays.
It is sad that pure blooded Asians like the Filipinos hate being Asian and would do anything to be classified as anything else, despite the fact that they are pure Asians.
You say we make fun of them because they are racially mixed? That is untrue. First of all, we never said that they were mixed, because simply put, they are not. It is they who always say they are Spanish. The only thing mixed about them is their culture, their religions and their names, not their race. Almost all pure blooded malays have spanish surnames becasue they were imposed on them during the colonial era and they the first filipino catholics were forced to convert into catholicism.
Anyway, since when are latinos Filipino-friendly? Spaniards have all but denied them entry into their country while latinos have free entry into Spain whenever they please. And latinos south of the border used them as slaves in the early years.
I once asked a Filipino man what part of Asia he was from and he replied “I’m not Asian, I’m a Hispanic from the Philippines!”, and I asked but aren’t Filipinos Asian? To which he replied in an angry tone “No, we are Spanish and Catholics, we don’t have Asian in us, only a few Chinese live in our country but that’s it”
How messed up is that?
What I’ve never understood is why they would go to such lengths to be called latinos or Hispanics or Spanish when latinos everywhere despise them and see them as nothing more than Asian who are Spanish wannabes because they happen to have once been ruled by the Spanish crown.
You are most likely another Filipino who hates the idea of being Asian. So I won’t bother replying to any response you may post.
By the way, there is no such thing as a Proud pinoy. They all hate being pinoys or pinays, so the idea of it all is ludicrous.
Proud Pinoy you say? hahahaha, Laughable!!!

AC Dropout,
["Tang" - is a dynasty the Cantonese ruled.]
This is false...the Tang Dynasty is considered northern in origin due to their descendancy from the previous Dynasty, the Sui,which comprised of officials from the Northern Zhou state.
Cantonese Chinese call themselves Tang-ren because they believe their spoken language is closest to the original Tang (Old Chinese). Since the Cantonese dialect have nine tones, it is able to express written Tang poetry more sucessfully than say, Mandarin which has just 4 tones. But, this does not mean the Cantonese people are of Tang origin.
In Tang times, southern China was the "backwater" of the Empire, considered to be barbaric because the people had no written language and wore tatoos. Tang armies later conquered these people and they became part of the Tang Empire. Thus, Cantonese are actually a southern people who were sino-cized by the Tang. Spoken Cantonese retained much of the remnants of Old Chinese because unlike Mandarin, Cantonese was not subjected to foreign modification by Northern invaders like the Mongols, Jurchens, and the Manchus. Anyways, the Cantonese are still Chinese and part of the mosaic that is China.
To Chinese are never United,
True, there are diffrences among the many Chinese groups in China but not to the extent that they seek autonomy. China is a BIG country and it is hard to think that such a large country can have a united people but the fact is, Chinese ARE united. Chinese are united in their shared history, traditions and written language. During China's turbulent history, Chinese people always yearn to be united whenever China was divided. Chinese patriots throughout history came from every part of China...north, south, east, west. China may have variety in its people and speech but they are shades of the same color.

"Putong" - means common, not petty. Get the shading of your translation right.
AC Dropout,
I actually know Putong means common or ordinary in Cantonese, the reason why I said petty is because a person from HK told me that Putong in "Putonghua" had a negative meaning to some people. Cantonese in HK still pride themselves as being different from their Northern brethren. I see this in travel guides and other descriptions of HK. Speaking soley in Mandarin in HK is not recommended. It makes one's life difficult especially for the traveler! If you don't understand Cantonese in HK, you're also in a disadvantage.
Learning Mandarin in HK is a must. With the handover to China, it makes much sense that HKers are required to understand and speak Mandarin. However, within the HK society, speaking proper Cantonese reveals a person's level of education and perhaps status. Studies have found that HKers have very little respect for people who speak vulgar Cantonese, or any of those nearby village dialects. Northerners who come to HK for job opportunities are required to speak Cantonese or else they might be denied of jobs or made fun of in the workplace.
I don't know what year you were in HK before the handover, but in the 70's and early 80's many HK ppl could care less if Mandarin was taught or spoken. Times has changed!
I have heard professors say that Mandarin is the literary/intellectual language of China while Cantonese is the commercial language. You might disagree with academia. But again, the majority of the overseas Chinese throughout the world speak Cantonese or one of its related forms like Toisan or Hakka....

Latino,
Hey, thanks for the cool word about us! I myself couldn't understand why SOME Asians view us as inferior than them just because we Filipinos aren't "Asian enough". True, we might have a strong Hispanic influence but we also don't deny the strong Asian influence that we have embraced all these years. I guess if they don't want us, we might as well look for others who will accept us. Filipinos, just as any other minority in America wants to belong.
AC dropout,
I learned more about careers and being Asian American from all your post here at Goldsea. So, keep it coming.........
Filipina Girl79,
Hey, sister! It's nice to see a fellow Filipino enlightening others about us and our culture. Hope to see you in other posts.........

The Solution
Jackass, go back to school and pay attention.
MAJORITY LIKE 90 % of Filipinos have NOOOOOO Spanish blood. How many times people have to point this out?
Only reason majority of Filipinos have Spanish surnames is simply because the Spaniards subjugated them and force it on them. Filipinos are mostly of Malay ethnic group. So all of you ignoramuses please get over this self hatred and stop trying to associate yourselves with the spaniards, chinese, japaense, whatever.
What would the Filipinos gain by lumping themselves with Hispanics? An average Filipino is more educated and more prosperousthan an average Hispanic in United States.
Indians are from Asia?? maybe, maybe not. Your point?? Europeans and Asians are from Africa, I sure don't consider myself African.
Dumbasses please exit right and leave this board, you guys are just confusing the ignorant.
