WHAT YOU SAY
[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
Jasperwhitedude,
I agree with you, I think this board is 90% anti-Filipino.
Many of these folks wonder why Filipinos don't always identify with other Asian Americans - well, we have our answer right here. Other Asian Americans don't see us as being Asian. Here are some examples, and my responses:
1. The first inkling I had of this was in college when a Japanese girl said to me "I met these two Filipino guys the other day and they actually looked Asian." WTF?!?!?
Response: There is actually a pretty large Chinese population in the Philippines, and the two gentlemen you met were probably ethnic Chinese whose families were from the Philippines. In any case, even if they were 100% Malay, they would still look Asian. Just "Southeast Asian", not "East Asian." Dimwit.
2. Then on this board, the entry signed "Filipino Pride? Does it exist? Your comments..." describes one person in her neighborhood and implies that all Filipinos must think this way (I know, you didn't say that, but you were thinking that all Filipinos are like this).
Response: My best friend's 7 year old daughter (who is 100% ABC) says to me "Uncle, my nose is too flat." I couldn't convince her that her nose was just fine. You give an example of one person and imply that it applies to the whole race. I have an example of one person. Will I make the assumption that it applies to an entire race? No, because that would be stupid.
3. Then "NdNgUrL..." says she has "come into contact with many filipinos with WAY WAY TOO MUCH FILIPINO PRIDE!"
Response: Every race contains a subset of people who have "way too much pride." Have you never met young Koreans/Chinese/Japanese/Indians/Vietnamese who had a lot of pride in their ethnic background? Or are you implying that "low lifes like Filipinos shouldn't have any pride" ? If you've never met any group of people from any other race that didn't have "way too much pride", then you should get around more. If you are implying the second statement, then you know where you can go.
4. And then "informent" says Filipinos "adore and envy white people", but gives no proof, not a single example.
Response: Why does everyone say we want to be white/black/hispanic? Geez, guys/gals, make up your minds!!! I don't understand the "Hispanic" thing, I have never met a Filipino that wanted to be Hispanic. I have met many that had Hispanic (and black and white) friends. But never any that wanted to be Hispanic.
And what is this about wanting to be "white"? Filipinos for the last three or four generations have learned to speak/read/write English. The presidents of the Philippines for years used to give national addresses in English because it was the most widely understood language in the country. Therefore, we have exellent communication skills in English. So do our parents. So do our grandparents. And if our great grandparents were alive, they might also. This means we, and our parents, and our grandparents, can easily and fluently communicate with the majority culture/race in this country. We, our parents, our grandparents can go to Target/Albertsons/BofA/our kids' schools and communicate with anyone there. Is this what you people interpret as wanting to be white? If so, that's pathetic. And don't give me an example of the "one Filipino person in your neighborhood" who does this and/or that and therefore they want to be white. I can give you examples of the other Asian races who do all the same things (and I've seen them all).
I have always gotten along well with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese people. In fact, most of my closest friends since college have been ABC. But since I've been reading this board and I've had the chance to read about all the prejudices you people have against Filipinos, I can't help wonder if all these "friends" of mine have the same prejudices.
To all you out there who include Filipinos in the Asian American family, God bless you. To all you others... well, maybe your children will have more open minds than you.

i think the worse feature of korea is the lack of its encourgement of an individualism. they want you to be all the same. but why? that attitude already has stigmatized us in this country with stereotypes to begin with.

Its very funny to see that people dont like to consider indian people as "asian" and they think filipinos are (well technically we both are, by location) but today i was taking a standardized test, and came to the part that u have to bubble in your ethnicity, i filled in "asian" and noticed underneath it there was a category called "filipino" it was seperate from asian, after filling out asian i had to bubble in my specific asian ethinicity, there was these choices to choose from, chinese, japanese, korean, vietnamese, asian indian, laotian, cambodian, and other asian. filipinos were not even under the pacifc islander cateogry, they were their own seperate category....can someone please explain y this is? esp. the people who belive indians should be their own seperae category, because obviously that is not the case.

Miyagi:
Thanks for understanding why some Coreans are over jealous in their nationality but most of us Coreans are no different than most other nationalities if attack we will defend. For those who have encountered over jealous Coreans and might have been offended, understand most are not so crude.
Migayo, sorry for what happened to you in Corea man, that is nooooo excuse for someone to attack you only for you nationality. If I was next to that guy for doing that to you I would of kicked his ass.
Past is the past, as long as one respect other cultures we shouldn't have any problems. I do have to wonder the policy of the Japanese government for consistantly offending her neighbors.
best wishes
NO EXCUSE

KA,
Yes, to be honest with you, I don't give a fat ass crap about East Asian history.
I should have started the discussion about the provincial mindsets of the many Korean Americans out there, and not Koreans as a whole.
I have met a several Korean exchange students in this country, and many of them were quite courteous and receptive of other Asians, and also Non-Asians!
Korean Americans are a different story (including those who have been here long enough to experience our filthy rotten culture). Many of them have this overbearing mentality that somehow they are perfect and better than the other Asians, which according to many of them, this grants them an exclusive right to denigrate their fellow Asian Americans of Chinese, Japanese, or Taiwanese ancestry, etc.
Go to any Asian board, forum or chatroom, besides Goldsea, and most Korean Americans will place themselves in a pedestal, and rant constantly about the flaws of other Asians.
Even when a CA, JA, or some other AA compliments anything Korean or anything relating to the Korean people, many KAs would spit back and say "Well of course, We Koreans are always better than you in food, manners, clothes, looks...etc". This is what really upsets me....I call this an abundance of unhealthy ethnic pride.

To pocky
Hi I am 23 years old native Korean man.First of all, I would love to apologize for Korean soldiers cragy evildoing in Vietnam war from all the bottom of my heart instead of many stupid Korean men.
Well it is very funny if we Koreans demand Japanese to apologize for their WW2 even we didn't apologize to Vietnamese.
Yes we sure did evil deed to Vietnamese.
and we should apologize for that and compensate for bearaved families enoughly.
now the mainstream of Korea is over 40years men.
They are very rude, ignorant and selfish.
many of them are jerks!
I am sure they won't care to what Korean soldiers did to vietnamese in vietnam war.VERY DISGUSTING!
but rather trust young Korean generation. Many of us know about our dishonor history in Vietnam very well.
and we are thinking we should complete this history as most vietnamese victims satisfy.
I know one left-wing Korean newspaper is now on making a campaign for apolozation and compensation regarding out dishonest evildoing in Vietnam.
and that newspaper is very popular and positive from korean students.
We are very disgraced.
until we get proper assent from vietnamese,we are not meant to demand apologization towards japan.
please remember-young Korean generation is much different from rude jerking middle, old aged Koreans.
again sorry for our evildoing.
native korean man, (I love vietnam very much)

AA Worldviews,
Now you see my point why certain aspects Christianity and Asian culture are mutually exclusive. So I've made my case. I'm glad you concur and offer examples of Christianity exclusion of European idea, but that is really off topic of our original discussion. Remember you challenged me on Christainity and Asian cultures.
What is your case, that you are so adamant the Christianity is not Western? Trying to justify your role in discrediting certain aspect of asian culture to appease the one and true god. Then using the Nazi soldier excuse, "I did not do it, God told me to." Or are you disgusted by the fact your mind and soul are now polluted with a Western deity. Please feel free to explain how Christianity is not Western from Asia point of view.
Offering up Korean mission coming to the USA is not really a satisfactory example. Those Korean now feel "spiritually superior" due to western religion and have come to the USA to help the misguided sheeps in the USA. It is similar to Japanese businessmen who were so in awe with USA culture. That they literally bought it up, block by block, company by company in the 80's - 90's. These asian embrace certain aspect of western culture more than Westerners.
Missionary ... you need to understand that to understand the concept of "spiritual and moral superiority" that started to occur once Christianity was no longer an outlawed religion.
This "Moral and Spiritual superiority" was also the beginnings of exploration and imperialism in Europe.
Which led to the conquest of most of Americas and Asia.
So from an anthropological point of view. Even though you are trying to offer savalation to the hypothetical soul. You are also doing significant damage to native Asian culture, all in the name of "Moral and Spiritual Superiority."
Look no offense, but these trival questions you bring up on Christianity makes me believe you should go back to Sunday School with those nice picture books of the White (not Black, not Asian, not Middle Eastern) Blue Eye Jesus with a beard in a white robe. You really don't belong in a Bible Study class yet. You sinner.
