Asian History...

It's nice that there is a historical figure that both the Filipinos and Chinese can both embrace (Rizal). It's much better to debate things we have in common rather than the differences.

I haven't seen any of these Fujian Chinese websites you mentioned. Just out of curiousity, do they also list Corazon Cojuangco Aguino? Her ancestors were also ethnic Chinese (evidenced by her maiden name Cojuangco).

AZN Realist:

"Filipino is only the nationality of millions of malays and thousands of mestizos and chinese, as is indonesian and malaysian."

You make it seems as though there are a lot of mestizos in the Phillipines.

Only 2% of all Filipinos are Mestizo, and half of this 2% is of the Malay/Spanish mix, the other half is of the Malay/Chinese mix.

There are more "pure" Chinese people in the Philipines than there are mestizos.
1.5% of Filipinos are of unmixed Chinese ancestry.
Meanwhile only 1% are Spanish Mestizos and another 1% are Chinese mestizos.

Put together, there are more people in the Phillipines who are of either pure Chinese and/or part Chinese ancestry [Chinese + Chinese/Malay Mestizos = 2.5%] than there are people of part Spanish/Malay mestizo ancestry [Malay/Spanish mestizo = 1%]

Of course all Filipinos thnik they are Spaniards or Latinos or Hispanics. lol.

AZN Realist, why don't you be realistic for a change!

You are are by far the most idiotic person i have seen on goldsea, here you are trying to tell me wut my post was "implying?" Haha, I was NOT bashing filipinos! I was simply saying that why are they in a separate category, when most people think they are more asian than indians who were included in the "asian" category, and in reality No asian is more asian than any other asian, but sadly some people think this way, like you MTSO!! while you did answer my question and i thank you for that, I definitely did not need you to say what i was "implying" by putting words in my mouth. So nect time take your frustration out on other people!

Asian History is important for all Asians

Jose Rizal did not just have a drop of chinese blood in him, he had as much chinese blood in him as he did malay. thats what 1/2malay 1/2 chinese means, and no one is disputing the fact that hes filipino because dont forget, filipinos are not a race of people there simply a nationality. In malaysia there are loads of chinese who say they are malaysian which they are but they also say they are chinese. theyre race or type is chinese, but theyre nationality is malaysian. filipino is only the nationality of millions of malays and thousands of mestizos and chinese, as is indonesian and malaysian.

MTSO,

"I think a previous poster mentioned Jose Rizal's Chinese background so that non-Filipinos would realize that there are actually some very significant ties between the Philippines and China."

Actually, as some non-Chinese people should know, there are many different types of Chinese.

Jose Rizal's ancestry came from the Fujian Province. Most Chinese, unfortunately see themselves as the group of Chinese they belong to, and not see themselves as just "Chinese". And most Chinese who migrated to other parts of the world are from the Southern Regions. Many Northern Chinese regard the Southern Chinese as culturally and at times, racially different people. I don't know if Filipinos post websites about the different groups of people found in the Philippines, but the Chinese have done something like that, especially the Southern Chinese. For example, info about Jose is usually found in websites about the Fujian Chinese or better known as the Hokkiens or the Hoklos. They were the main group to settle in the Philippines because they were skilled in sea travelling, while other groups of Chinese were mainly inland people, and migrated to other places by land.

On the issue of identity, yes, Jose never regard himself as Chinese but only as a Filipino. Like many famous people with Chinese ancestry, being Chinese was a bad thing, because people perceived the Chinese as outsiders. The same thing happened to Bruce Lee, who eventually saw himself as a "human being" and not "Chinese". Btw, Bruce Lee was not even 100% Chinese, his grandmother on his mother side was German.

Ethnic labels don't mean a thing.
