JimJim, AM, Yummo,

To many westerners and non-westerners, dogs are seen as pets and as “family members”. Eating “family members” is cruel and disgusting. However, understanding cultural and culinary differences, we have to accept that others eat foods that we consider “non-food”. I can think of many “non-foods”: The Japanese still eat whales; dogs for Koreans; the Chinese still eat monkey brains, cats, and rats; some Africans drink elephant dung tea.

What I and others still find VERY disturbing, disgusting, and cruel, are the way SOME people like to: beat the dog to death to raise the adrenaline in the dog’s blood; beat the monkey to death with hammer strikes on the head; boil and skin cats alive; etc, etc.

While livestock/animal cruelties go on within the United States, getting caught with unlawful animal cruelty may result in criminal fines and/or incarceration, not to mention public out lash.

Is it too much to ask (OK, pressure) for such laws?

The Chinese dumplings (jiaozu, manto), Japanese gyoza and Korean mandu all have a Central Asian origin.

Just look at these pics:

Chinese manto:

Uigur manti:

And the Uigur Muslim nan bread that you see in the photo is also eaten in many parts of China. Traditionally, we call it "shaobing."

A group of South Korean parliamentarians have introduced a bill to make it legal to sell dog meat in defiance of international pressure to end the age-old habit of eating canines.

Mandarin style shanghai noodles with spinach and ground beef is da bomb. It tastes especially good with Saigon chili.

I think that eating dog is disgusting. But I was born and raised in the U.S. I'm sure many Indians think that eating cow is barbaric. You don't see any of them reacting the way Westerners do about Asians eating dog. It's very hypocritical and ethnocentric. If they think this way in matters such as food, why not say that our language is barbaric? And BTW, why do Westerners call Genghis Khan a barbarian while Caeser is hailed as a great expander of the Empire? I think that you all know the answer.

hey have u read the news abt this Brigiite Bardot, french actress, who criticized the koreans for eating dog meat and even tried to lobby for the boycott of the World Cup 2002 to be held in korea???And to my disgust, all these FIFA officals even agreed with her views and warned korean president to clean up its old traditional habits of dog eating??? whats this??? i think this is extremely unfair.what does dog eating have to do with sports?? i know dog eating is kinda "barbaric" but that doesnt mean koreans are all savage dog killers who eat every little puppy they find from the streets. french restaurants serve all these snails ,so why dont we all boycott the french team and tell them what kind of "savage eaters" they are???

Ka,

I been to many Korean version Chinese restuarants. I like them. Granted it is not the most authentic Chinese Food. But the variations on the theme is good. I like the 'Jan Bong' the spicy seafood noodle soup dish. Granted I have no idea where in China eats a dish like 'Jan Bong', but I cannot deny it is a good variation.

Sort of like Taiwanese version of Japanese food. Or USA version of Chinese Food. Good variations.

Did bulgogi and kalbi come to Korea during the Mongol rule? I heard that many Korean kings were married to Mongol princesses during the Yuan Dynasty and they may have affected the court culture, including food. But, I think Mongols boil their meat more often than cooking it. And, lamb/mutton is their meat of choice, not pork and beef.

When I visited Beijing last winter, the people there also eat barbecued meats. But, it is usually the thick lamb on skewers. I didn't really like the taste of lamb.
