I fully understand the concept of a platonic relationship, disparate from feelings of romantic love.

It's situations where one feels love and sexual intimacy with someone that they don't even know that disturbs me.

It's mere infatuation. It has nothing to do with love. Love perhaps equals lust in this society, but there is a huge discrepancy between having sexual feelings for someone and having the inclinations to foster something more substantial than that kind of physical energy. Therein lies my confusion. There is a certain obsessiveness with physical attributes and blatant disregard for who a person is, inside, when one is sexually attracted to someone else.
All the discrete mathematics in the world can reduce love to one simple denominator, of sexual attraction.

There should really be a conglomeration of several other factors involved.

I am just really seriously distraught by all this rampant sexual harassment.

Yes, people do indeed grope on the crowded train. This morning I got groped. Quite distressful. Initially dismissed the awful feeling that I was being given some sort of frontal rub-down because there were two men whose backs I was facing. Then I noticed this burly arm wrapped across me from behind. And I felt someone trying to part my legs from behind. I tried to throw the arm off my body. To no avail! He continued to move his hand up and down and dip his knees between my legs. I am grossly disgusted. There is no feeling that compares to the cheapened way one feels after being manhandled like a piece of raw meat.

can't you imagine that there are women who are not interested in sexual relationships?! Even those studies which were sponsored by liberal people indicate that there is a large percentage of women who would be glad to have no sex. Most women and a smaller percentage of men don't "need" any sex, they fulfill just their duty to get children.
Of course there's a difference between getting the child of a chosen partner and that of an arranged partner. But that is not necessarily a reason to copulate with someone who is sympathetic. Copulation has to be seen as a work for children/descendants,nothing more, nothing less.

Most asian girls don't go changing last names officially after marriage. Most asian cultures don't have that practice.

The Balkans had no clue!!! How much you wanna bet with me those females did more than talk and spend platonic times with their "substitute brother"? I bet these were the times when women weren't given choices in marriage partners and had to make do with any old money-bag geezer that their parents stuck them with. Something to be said for being old ugly rich guys. They don't have to have the stigma of being the "substitute brother".

Nawwww, I'm sorta backwards, but my initials aren't. ML is the initials for my Asian first name, and K, of course, is the initial for my American name. As for my last name, I guess I'm still waiting for a really cool one from a really good guy. I'll let you know when I acquire one I'd like to keep.

They have that in asia also. They're called classmates. You have brother and sister type relationships with people in your school, which might be carried on into adult life.

I think firesnake is a just your typical confused girl, trying to sort out her life after college or in college.

there will always be a constant male part of humankind associating love with sex. But ancient evidence shows that it can be different. In the Balkan there was an old custom which was shaped for those females who had no brother whom they could love (without sex). In the old times a female was allowed to adopt a nice young man as a substitute for a (nice) brother. I think that is what you were searching for, firesnake.
