WHAT YOU SAY

[This page is closed to new input. --Ed.]
I came to the US when I was 10 yrs old.
I guess I would be classified as a F.O.B in a sense that I wasn't born here.

I personally don't fit into any of the F.O.B sterotypes that are labeled here for F.O.Bs.

I like F.O.Bs. Some people here seem to be offended by F.O.Bs to the point where they feel embarrassed to be around them. I feel that if a person is really self assured and know that they personally fit in... how other people of their own race act would not be significant enough to make them that self-consious.

As for people that have extreme low tolerence for F.O.Bs... it's really not their fault... people can only be accepting of others when they are well-accepted.

cloying people bother me --I feel suffocated by a few FOB coworkers who I like ok, but they are just clinging to me too much. I don't want to be any closer to them than casual acquaintances, and they bug me when they are trying to be so close to me. I guess it's not really their faults so much, but my workplace. I don't want to be considered a FOB one. I guess that if these same personal characteristics (of the FOBs) were on a white person or some other person, I wouldn't feel so annoyed because I wouldn't feel as if their failures would be my failures by association. you know, from non-asian perspectives of some pretty simple minded people, if you look alike, you are alike. (and we don't even look alike)

I don't know why white people think all asians look alike, when lots of whites look even more alike (to the point where if they had different hair colour, they are sometimes almost unrecognizable)

just ranting. thanks

ok, what do you think of this?

-am I a horrible person if I don't like FOBs that are fairly nice people, but look dumpy and FOB-by and poor?

I feel like an awful person because I work with some of these kinds of FOBs and even though I think they are nice enough people, I think they are sabotaging my career because they are so socially inept. I feel embarassed to be seen with these people. Does this say I am intolerant? Being an AA, I don't know what to think --I don't want to alienate them because I think they deserve to be accepted, but I don't like them that much, and don't want to be friends to the point where I have to be around them outside of work hours. What do you think?

what I like are the FOBs that are educated and as gus puts it, "don't laugh when you share an elegant solution..." --I love those that can appreciate a well thought out idea. The FOBs I don't like: are those that are rough and crude and pretend that they are not "just off the boat" when it's obvious that they are not acclimatized to their social environment. I hate it when people pretend that they are so "with it" when they are so obviously not. (not that I am with it...)

Well, personally, if an FOB is anyone who is not born in the US then I would be counted as one. I speak perfect Chinese, YET I speaks perfect English-a... I know what an FOB is like and you just have to understand them. Really, they're really not all that different. The guys are immature and perverted when they're in any age below 18, and they're rude but you just have to be a lil more patient. I've been in the US for nearly all my life and am very tolerant of all people. Really guys, be open! Oh yeah, and the FOB lil girls don't wear bras (does not apply to some for Asia is advancing pretty quickly) and some don't have too much make-up and they like Boolitney Suh-peohs. But they're soooooo sweeeeeet!

All the FOBs I know are PhDs in EE, CS, or Physics. They will not laugh at you when you share an elegant solution to a difficult technical problem.
My married FOB friends all have double incomes, great jobs and live in exclusive developments in Plano TX (north of Dallas). The most notable attitude they have, I would say, is having patience for jealous and under-educated Americans. This includes AAs.
