Li Shu Lien:
Thank you for letting me know YOU exists, I appreciate you for being comfortable enough to just be YOU and having your own style and not worrying about being attractive to superficial guys. Stay like you are and you will be always be appreciated just for being my kind of girl.

I think that AFs overdressing (and other women too) is part of this whole competition thing. Women are always subtely competing with one another either for male attention or just to be the "winner". When I go to the mall (just your run of the mill mall, nothing ritzy) I see a lot of AF girls wearing LV or Burberry bags, tons of makeup, designer clothes, huge heels, etc etc and I just think why do they get so dressed up just to go to the mall?? It kind of makes those of us who just dress normally feel like we're "out of it" fashion-wise.
no need to overdress    Monday, April 29, 2002 at 08:42:27 (PDT)
ok, I hate cut-offs. I hate frayed jeans. I hate grunge. I would love to go to get a superb fitting at a fashion house on 5th ave. But, I am poor! so I just make sure that I buy clothes that fit me properly, hang right, and don't spend$$$$ on designer labels. Yet, if I saw someone in class with a hermes scarf, I would not think it was so terribly out of place, I would think that it was a fake! (hahahah!)

I agree with the person who said that it was a "classy attitude" that counts. (but you know, anyone who says "classy" is not...)

MLK,

When you go get full service coutore, you only need to stand once for measurements. If you get tired they will get a model with your similar proportions to stand for you. They give you food and beverages as you nit-pick to death. You can have them make worn out jeans if you like. Hell you can even hire a fashion consultant to talk for you.

On the lower east side there are some fashion shops coin "affordable coutore."
It 's more off the rack. But everything in there are one of a kind.

I shop at the "suit and sweat" fashion houses.

that's just me

You just described me & my style to a "T". Thank you for letting me know that guys like you still exist. I was starting to think that most guys were superficial-choosing women for the "labels" they wear, which shouldn't matter.

To A.
Sheeeeeeezzz! What's up with all this "brand-name" stuff? Granted, you can do what you please with your money, but why are we making this such a BIGGIE DEAL! Hasn't anyone ever heard of "understated elegance"? Stick a $3 pair of sunglasses on a face that looks like a million dollars and...voila! The sunglasses look like it's worth 1 million and three bucks! That's $1,000,003.00 (is that enough zeros, folks, to make a million & three dollars?). Here's another hot fashion tip. Wear a worn-out pair of jeans (the more frayed at the edges, the better) together with a classy attitude (better get a tee-shirt on that if you don't want to get arrested!) and the jeans are now a classy piece that's priceless. Oh, and if it's too frayed, you can always rip the legs off and you will have some great summer shorts! I had to do that for a couple of my really old jeans (I think I bought them five years ago) just last week because I couldn't see springing more money for shorts this summer. I'd rather spend my money enjoying myself somewhere fun! But then, that's just me.

And please don't make me laugh too hard now, Mr. "proper fashion houses off 5th ave AC Dropout" hahahaahahaa!! You are just the funniest thing since sliced bread! The day you can forcibly stick me in one of those boring places, standing still for hours at a time, just for a tailor to pin me up in all that brand-name fabric, that's the day I give up my favorite old jeans (and I loooove my old jeans, so it ain't ever gonna happen, dude!)

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the finer things in life. And there is nothing wrong with looking your best. I certainly do not subscribe to the grunge/jeans and t shirt style myself. My problem is that a lot of asian females overdress ALL the time, as many other people here have stated. It is just plain snobbery to wear only high-label clothes, tacky to talk about how much something cost, and pretentious to always look like you're going to the prom. An Hermes scarf is out of place in a college classroom. It just seems to me that a lot of asian females are very materialistic. Very. Check out the board on What AMs like about AFs, the question of "what do they like least" is answered by 79% of men as "materialism and superficiality". So there you have it.

Also why spend half your paycheck on clothes, makeup, shoes just to boost your weak self-esteem? This need to look rich often impoverishes women, they could be spending that money on an education, or a car or house so they don't have to depend on a man.
