It's one of many factors I consider. | 44%
It's less important than other personal qualities. | 28%
I am not attracted to tall people. | 8%

Assuming you are an Asian American, which best matches your feelings toward your own height?
I'd like to be 3 inches taller. | 43%
I'd like to be an inch taller. | 27%
I'm happy with my height. | 26%

Im a happa chick, only 5'4, kinda short, but that is the best possible height for me. Im an Irish dancer and I want to be on Riverdance and my height really helps me. COmpared to the tall white girls I am skinnier and a little shorter so I can jump higher and I also look a lot better when Im dancing then they do. Some Asian girls dont like being short but no one really cares. A lot of my dancer friends want to be shorter and they think Im lucky.

Derek, no offense taken. It is true that on average, Asiatic people are shorter than other people. But the Indian people that you talk about aren't the majority. Iranians, who are even more 'white' looking and genetially closer to Europeans than sub-continental indians, are medium height at best.
You don't know as much as you think, buddy.    Sunday, December 09, 2001 at 00:16:40 (PST)
Derek,

Get yourself a plane ticket (if you can afford it) and visit Beijing, Xian and Seoul. You will be quite surprised with what you just said regarding Asian men's height.
Northern Asian men are not short    Saturday, December 08, 2001 at 16:14:17 (PST)
Derek, thinking that by virtue of majoring in biology at the university of Toronto makes you an authority on the height of races is quite ridiculous. Whether you're right or not, I don't know.

Anyway I love women. Their height doesn't matter as long as they are good-looking, eye-catching, and fine.

Derek,

I think the comment about Chinese being taller was meant to be an analogy like, "Northern Chinese are generally taller than Southern Chinese and Southeast Asians", just as Northen Europeans tend to be taller than Southern Europeans. It didn't state that Chinese are taller than Europeans.

There is evidence that Northern Chinese are taller than Southern Chinese. The great basketball players of China, like 7'1" Wang Zhizhi and 7'6" Yao Ming, are all from the northern provinces of China.

Derek:

You are wrong when you say European, North American and African men are much taller than Asians in general. I'll bet that the average height in africa is less than in Asia and certainly less than in Northern China. Also, what does "in general" mean? For instance, the average height of a 17 year old male in beijing in 2000 is the same as it is in the UK. So i think your comment is the ol' sweeping steroetype that "Asian means short" rather than being based on scientific studies.

Derek-plain old white dork:

Biology major? hardy har har. Since when did a biology major turn into an anthropology expert? Get a clue clown!!
You have obviously not met up with a Northern Chinese or even Koreans who are on average as tall or taller than Europeans. Hell, you don't even have to go there to find a tall East Asian just look around. Height is correleated with nutrition moron not just genes. In general, East Asians don't consume a lot of dairy which helps bones grow stronger.
And yes you are racist fool. You equate North American with non-Asian. You must have never run across an Asian American/Canadian. Time to leave your bubble and join the real world.

Derek - plain old white guy:

I don't know which post you were referring to. But, the heights compared were of Northeast Asians-Northern Chinese, Koreans, Japanese with Southern Chinese, Taiwanese and Southeast Asians (Vietnamese, Thais, Filipinos, Malaysians, Indonesians, Laotian, Cambodian, Burmese) not South Asians (Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis). You have to admit, there are some fairly tall Northern Asians. Time to time you will also see a tall Southeast Asian.

Actually you guys are wrong. East asian people are much shorter than people of south asian origin. People from northern India have an average height that matches that of europeans about 5'9-5'11). The fact that somebody stated that the Chinese are taller is quite ridiculous. I am a biology major at the university of toronto - so I know this as a fact. And I am not being biased when I say this, but European, North American and African men are still much taller than Asians in general. Do not take this as racism, I am just clarifying for you guys.

nicholas:

good comment...thank you for the clarification. i was in no way attacking you, its just that, lets face it , the steroetype - as wrong as it may be - is that asian genes - whatever type of asian it may be - are shorter than any other race. and as this forum and many statistical studies have proven... is not true anymore.

The heights of Asians can vary.

Like many people have been writing- there are Northern Asians, Southern Chinese, Southeast Asians. It's not much different from Europeans with Northern Europeans being long and tall, Alpine (Central European) being medium in height and broader, and Medittereanean being shorter, slender, long faces.

Northern Asian especially Northern Chinese can be seen as taller; Southern Chinese though genetically related to Southeast Asians, are, in general shorter than Northern Chinese, but taller than the Southeast Asians. While the Southeast Asians, in general, are the shortest.

I am sorry you perceived my post to mean what you thought. I did not, however, make a generalized statement that all Chinese are short, because apparently there are many who are not. But in my case, I happen to have had a grandmother who was a short Chinese woman. I would conclude along with the evidence of my physical family, that an intelligent assumption can be made that the case of my height was from my 'short' Chinese grandmother. Again, I reiterate, that I haven't made a generalized statement. Don't get offended because the unfortunate stereotype out there is that all Chinese are short and that I was generalizing all Chinese to be, because I know that's not true. When I was living in Spain for several years, I found there to be many people of my height. On average, people from the Mediterranean regions of Europe tend to be quite shorter than northern Europeans - that can be argued as well. I think it's unfortunate and ignorant on the part of the accusers to say that Asians in general are short.
Anyway, thank you for your comment and for clarifying the misunderstanding. I think that this post forum should not be a place to attack people, but a place to intelligently discuss issues pertaining to what most of you people are - Asian Americans. I think this 'may' be just a younger crowd I am dealing with.

Asian Dominatrix,

actually, i read somewhere in an average body size study that women have longer torsos, which makes up about 35.2% of their height. for men it is about 34.4%.
i think you get the illusion that women have longer legs because they usually wear their pants higher (because they can). if we look at women from the waist down (not the crotch), which we usually do, then they do seem more leggy. it also says that women have bigger heads then men, relative to height.

as soon as i find that link ill post it

actually...    Monday, November 19, 2001 at 14:35:34 (PST)
