(Updated to reflect the 100 most recent valid responses.)

Assuming you are an Asian American, how important is height in your assessment of a person's attractiveness?
It's a key element of attractiveness. | 20%
It's one of many factors I consider. | 44%
It's less important than other personal qualities. | 28%
I am not attracted to tall people. | 8%

Assuming you are an Asian American, which best matches your feelings toward your own height?
I'd like to be 3 inches taller. | 43%
I'd like to be an inch taller. | 27%
I'm happy with my height. | 26%
I'd like to be an inch shorter. | 4%

I have seen the 3rd generation Chinese and Japanese Americans. Both groups tower over their parents and grandparents generation. But, it seems like the Chinese Americans reach parity with whites quicker than the Japanese. In fact, many 3rd generation Chinese Americans are just as the tall as the northern Chinese immigrants from mainland China.

Solution: if you come from a Cantonese household, substitute bread and cheese for rice and tofu.

I've talked with a few people who have visited South Korea within the past few years. They all say the average height of Korean men in their 20's and early 30's is about 5'10", and 5'5" for Korean women.

About Yao Ming - yes, he's from Shanghai, which is more central than northern China. But it is north of Hong Kong, which is a popular city of southern China. I remember reading an article about the tall basketball players of China, and it also discussed height of the Chinese. When Britian owned Hong Kong until 1997 (in the southern province), many British, Europeans, and Americans who visited China would only visit Hong Kong and the immediate vicinity. Chinese in this region were shorter, and the visitors would mistakenly assume they've seen most of China. For most of the past century, they spread stories back home of how "short" Chinese supposedly are.

Also, there is the 7'9" basketball player from North Korea, Ri Myung Hun, who tried to enter the NBA before Wang or Yao. He was ineligible to join the NBA because America is not allowed to do business with North Korea, after the Korean war 1950-1953.

In asia, the tallest people are probably from Shandong(north china)
Beijing people are also very tall..6'1 is not rare.
It all depends on good or bad nutrition caused by wars etc..or if your a civilized guy in a city, or just common sense!
What are Coreans?Do you mean Koreans?
If you do, they arent taller than chinese people, it's true!Go to beijing than seoul!
I think Koreans have the height of Caucasian people

North Chinese have the height of tall african tribe people

South Chinese have the height of Korean

And japan and also the south are generally short.

We Chinese are tall!Oh yeah, Kung Fu does make ya short, just look at jackie chan, than maggie cheung, than bruce lee, then chow yun fat (chow does not know it, trust me, he trained for CTHD)

GRRR!
Here's some of my idea's
I'll keep it short....

Chinese Tall

Korean Average

Japanese Vary's

Cambodian,Mongolian,Thai,Vietnamese etc...Mostly short...

Ya see, most chinese old ladies and men dont shrink alot, they are just short because of war in china which stunted their growing! And ancient records taken in tang dynasty china from northern china, says a tall handsome man ,translated to common measurements, is 7ft tall! Now that is maybe exaggerated, but probally like 6'5?
Many celebs from hong kong are like
Male:5'10-6'2
Female5'5-5'10
I think that's pretty average
I use celebs cause they arent really tall and really short

Traditionally southern chinese are shorter than northern chinese, and it is true if you go to beijing and then to hongkong.

Now, if your short and asian, it could be because you learned kung fu, weight lifted when u were young, had mal-nutrition, not chinese or korean, and just the time to time short person.

All I want is ethnic diversity!!!
China is protected by oceans vast jungles, swamps, and deserts, so we have to be different...We are tall!!! SHEESH, so are korean!(I'm not happy with that but korean people are pretty tall if we think un-biasedly..)

Regardless of height, there is no question that East Asians have a much slighter build than Europeans and Africans. Improved nutrition is raising the average height of, for example, Chinese, but it is not making them stockier. Asians tend to be of much smaller build, and have smaller feet and hands.

btw: Yao Ming is from Shanghai China, which at best, can be said to be part of Jiangsu province. If this being the case, then it is also the southernmost region of Jiangsu, being just north of Zhejiang. On the other hand, we have the shorter 7'1 Wang Zhizhi who hails from Beijing China.

One more comment. African height has a greater standard deviation, meaning there are a greater number of Africans who are either very tall or very short (more concentrated on the extremes), compared to other races. There are many African tribes, primarily in Central and Eastern Africa, where men's height average over 6 feet. I think the Tutsi tribe average male height is around 6'3". Then there are many African tribes elsewhere where the average men's height is below 5'7". Men of the Pygme tribe have an average height a little below 5 feet.
