Don,
Height is a relevant topic in society. There are many interesting studies about height, such as:
*Taller men and women get larger pay raises and promoted faster than shorter co-workers of equal skill and accomplishments.
*Women prefer dating taller men.
*Taller candidates win political elections more frequently.
Too often, I hear people spread stories like' "Asians are short", or "Caucasions are CONSIDERABLY taller than Asians", when many of these assumptions are based on stereotypes. There are millions of Asians out there. You can't simply label all of us as short based on meeting a few Asians and old stereotypes. I'm just trying to give a more accurate picture.

what are you talking about? I love dark lipstick and think it looks great. I am not Korean, but I think it looks beautiful and I think what's really kind of ugly is the bright red lipstick that hasn't been properly adjusted to skin tone. Now that's gaudy!

Hiaal,
I am an African who just happened upon your post while surfing the web. You say that the Northern Chinese approach the tall tribes of Africa in height. Maybe you are correct when you say so. I am prepared to grant you the benefit of the doubt, never myself having been to Northern China. But I want to give a mental picture of what these guys look like, especially the Tutsi and the Dinkas of East Africa, for I have seen these people with my own eyes.
Next time you take a walk outside (I presume you are in the States), picture every one you see as being 6 to 7 inches taller, and that ought to give you an idea of the kind of people you are comparing the Northern Chinese to. They make American men look like small boys. (By the way, the Dinkas I just referred to call themselves "The Men of the Men")
If it then appears to you that the Chinese are indeed that tall, then I say, damn, you Northern Chinese are tall.

I read a Time magazine article about European and American height a few years ago. Among young males (in the 20s and 30s) in Europe, the Dutch in the Netherlands are the tallest, 6'0" average. I think most young European men average 5'10" to 5'11".
Koreans average 5'9", mabye 5'10". I haven't been to China, but I've met many Chinese. Chinese probably average 5'6" to 5'10", depending on which region. Over 10 years ago, the average Japanese height of young men was 5'6". It's probably 5'7" to 5'8", now.
These estimates are my own, based on observations and artices I've read. They are not absolute. If you have other estimates, go ahead and post.

Dan,
Koreans are a round, stocky people, the Japanese are a slender type, and the northern Chinese are mesophalic types. The southern Chinese are about the same as Japanese.
About height, the Koreans and Japanese are quickly approaching the height of northern Chinese (due to improved diet and living conditions). But, with China modernizing and affording more food, you can expect the Northern Chinese to be even more taller. Many northern Han and Tibetans are just as tall as black people already.

I visited Korea a few summers ago, only to find that all of my younger male cousins are taller than I am! I am 5'7" on a good day. I must have missed out on some Korean diet craze while growing up eating donuts in America, since my height was indeed once considered average/above average back in the homeland. But... how important of a topic is this, anyway?

Chow Yun-Fat seems to look different from other Chinese people I have known. He is tall and says he is from the Hakkas. Is it just my imagination that he looks different? He has extra thin arms and legs which never seem to get heavier, but his face and torso sometimes get quite heavy. He also has very large hands that could palm a basketball.

China is a very diversified country, but its true that most of its population live in the central and southern cities... So, why do you talk about chinese and northern chinese? The majority of the chinese people live in the south... Now, i do think that the heights vary from region to region... China is a very big country. But they don´t vary as much as you say... The tallest are probably the northern chinese, who are as tall as the koreans, with a 5"8-5"9 average... and that´s the young generations... Japanese are about that height too, but i´d risk to say they´re usually less smaller in built... The southern chinese are about 5"6 average...
The european and american average´s are probably around 5"9-5"10...

I lived in Hong Kong for 10 years until 1997. Most young men averaged about 5'6" to 5'7". Very plain, didn't stand out much. I was on the big side at 5'9".

A story about one of the tallest men ever to live. He was a Chinese.
http://www.ashleighhotel.com/chang.html
Due to the large genetic genepool, the Chinese seem to have the largest number of abnormally tall people. I know it's not the norm, but it's stil interesting to note.
Wow.

Koreans are pretty tall people. They are around the height of ShangHai or hong kong people, which are pretty tall if you exclude the old men and ladies and the malnurished people that endured wars.
They get some of their height from the "civilized for many generations" North Chinese of Beijing but are not nearly as tall.
Shandong peninsula has the tallest people in Asia though, they are like the tall tribes of africa.
Hey ever wonder why Koreans like dark lip stick?
