This should not mislead one to believe that the Shandong people are necessarily related in any way to those of the Caucasoid race. But rather, it does firmly establish that their DNA composition is similar. Just as Shandong people have black hair, as do the the Southern Italians, this does not suggest one is necessarily related to the other, or that one group of people originated from the other.

A lot of you keep mentioning the northern Han Chinese as being the tallest Asians, especially those from the Shandong Province region. Well, here are some facts why that might be:
"DNA Points to Potential Link Between Ancient Shandong and Europe"
Guangming ribao (11 September 2000)
A recent article entitled "Yong DNA yanjiu gudai de lishi (Using DNA to Research Ancient History)" has generated a great deal of interest and debate due to its revelation that the DNA samples taken from ancient Shandong inhabitants resemble those of Europeans. Scientists in the Genetics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in order to examine temporal changes in genetic structure, compared the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of three populations that lived in the same location, Linzi, Shandong province, during two different periods: the Spring and Autumn Period (770-475 BC) and the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). Two indices were used to compare the genetic differences: (1) the frequency distributions of the radiating haplotype groups and (2) the genetic distances among the populations. Scientists at the University of Tokyo discovered not only that the genetic compositions of these two groups were different, but there was also a substantial difference between both of these groups and the modern inhabitants of Shandong. The genetic composition of the individuals from these two burial groups is relatively close to that of present-day Europeans. Moreover, the genetic composition of the individuals dating to 2,500 years ago, the Spring and Autumn Period, more closely resembles that of Europeans than does the genetic composition of individuals dating from 2000 years ago, the Han Dynasty. These finds have yielded no concrete conclusions, due to the difficulties of laboratory processing and the limited number of samples. Further research and a greater variety of samples from different groups in a number of areas is still required. However, this research could provide a significant link in understanding genetic diversity and routes of migration in ancient China. For more information regarding these finds please consult: Molecular Genetic Analysis of Remains of a 2,000-Year-Old Human Population in China and Its Relevance for the Origin of the Modern Japanese Population published electronically on 22 December 1998 by Hiroki Oota, Naruya Saitou, Takayuki Matsushita, and Shintaro Ueda.
Chinese are not just one race

ka,
People in China don't think of Koreans as tall people? They don't really think about the heights of Koreans. It's pretty average, not as tall as the Northerners, but not the shortest either.
Either way, most of Chinese society don't really stereotype ethnic Koreans or pigenhole them. If you went to a Chinese government site, they are usually full of simplistic descriptions even though they may be well-meaning. But it doesn't really reflect Chinese society's attitudes.
someone who knows

Just echoing many people and from what I've observed- I believe the Northern Chinese are the tallest people. When I was in high school, the tallest Asian guy (there were many Koreans, Chinese, Taiwanese) was this Northern Chinese guy who was 6'4." Most of the rest were around 5'6"-5'10." I also go to church with lots of Koreans, Chinese and other Asians. The tallest guy is this guy of Northern Chinese descent. He's also like 6'4". Koreans can be tall, but on average, I don't think they are as tall as the Northern Chinese.
The Southern Chinese are shorter on average, but the ones who grew up in the States are taller. I've seen many in the range of 5'7" to 5'10".

Northern Chinese are no way near as tall as the African tribes! Obviously, someone here is full of bullshit.
But Northern Chinese can come close to the heights of Americans. The average height is probably somewhere around 5'9 to 5'10. But not 6'6 or something crazy like that.
But if you walk around Northern Chinese cities, you bump into men who are 6'6 or something quite often.

why do they say "Koreans are tall people?" I hear Korean people say this all the time as well.
I went to the official Chinese government website that describes the 57 ethnic minority groups of China. On it, it says that ALL Koreans are good in singing and dancing. OH, and we are good in making greasy rice.
I heard that the Japanese also say Koreans are good in singing, dancing, wrestling, and we are also hot tempered and love drinking.
Does all these stereotypes remind you of another ethnic minority group in the United States? Blacks also are branded with these stereotypes--they are suppose to be tall, physically strong, naturally born with rhythm, hot tempered, and loves drinking.
I must be black--although considering i'm short and lack rythm, (although like a proper korean gentlemen, drink).
Hey did any people actually do some sort of a research on height variations? anyone?
