I am not sure if it is correct to say that Asian women get eyelid surgeries just because of Western imperialism and their desire to look more white. I know that my parents and their friends have always thought that double eyelids are more attractive and my parents have teased my little sister for not having much of a double eyelid. This is not because of my parents and their friends thinking that white features are more attractive (my dad thinks that Julia Roberts is ugly with her big mouth) than Chinese features. Plenty of people within the Chinese community prefer double eyelids simply because they find it more attractive, not because they glorify Whiteness.

There was a statistic that was published recently that indicated people who were taller were paid $3,000. or more a year in their jobs than their "shorter" counterparts.
Hummmmmmm. Interesting eh?? What does that tell you??? Watch out you little "shorties". You might be underpaid!!

I'd love to be 3" taller. Then I'd be 5'7" tall. In my opinion height & being slender can make clothes look real good.
There's a good reason why models are tall. It shows off & helps sell clothes.

to sarah,
i'm a chinese living in london and i've been to america. i'm not sure if it is because people in eastern usa are shorter than those in other parts of america, but i feel that people in the UK are generally taller (considering both males and females) im 16 yo and 6ft short, my gf who is also chinese is 15 and 5ft 11. im about average in my school and three out of the seven asians in my year are taller than me. most WASPs in my year are about 6ft 2 and the tallest is 6ft 8. my gf also says that shes about average height in her school. one thing is for sure, american women are not as tall as british women cause a lot of my white female friends are about the same height or even taller than me, especially the blondes.

To Sarah,
I can defintely feel for you. I grew up as a loner Korean male in an upper-class jewish neighborhood in L.A. At UCLA, when my people of my own culture rejected me, I realized that I had to make adjustments. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with your behavior, but I found that when I became more sensitive to the needs and expectations of other asians, in an asian context, that I became more successfull socially with other Koreans and asians in general.
This may seem trite, but it bears repeating; Western society is very individual centered, while asian cultures are generally group identity centered. I'm not trying to say that you are doing anything wrong, but maybe you may want to lighten up your approach to other asians.
Caucasian pop culture has gone out of its' way to make asian males appear effeminate, ineffective and assexual (guess reason please). Inspect yourself to see if you are unconsciously ascribing to any of these preconceptions, and behaving in what could be caucasian male centered behaviors... Maybe you are sending signals to the effect that you are off limits...
I unconsciously sent off bad signals to some of the most stunning asian women due to my ignorance of my own bias. After speaking with some of them later on, I realized the bias in my own behavior. I was kind of cold and condescending to them wihtout really realizing it...
To give you a frame of reference, my "first" was a beautiful Jewish girl named Casey, and I never knew an asian woman intimately before college. However, my current wife hails from my culture and ethnicity and we get along in a manner that is enviable to others.
Just my thoughts. Please don't take it as ragging on you...
Peace

To "Pretty, confident, small-eyed AA female." Your comments endear you to me... However,
My brother is a plastic surgeon and I am seriously considering writing an academic exposition on the what he and other plastic surgeons refer to as "Romanization Blepharoplasty," the surgery that makes eyes look larger. The fold on the upper eyelid is not a physical characteristic exclusive to caucasian people. To imply that this surgery is undertaken to appear "whiter" is a wishful fantasy of the dominant white culture. Asian peoples have for many generations exhibited this physical trait, independant of caucasian genetic influence. Large eyes are pretty are pretty to many cultures, but are they are by no means a trait exclusive to caucasian people.
The point is that subtle forces from false positions of authority are constantly trying to shape your opinions in their favor and against ours. Be Aware. Be Critical. Question authority, you might find that many of your ingrained beliefs are totally unfounded and ridiculous. Not doggin on you though, just please consider it.

AC Dropout,
What was it like growing up with "ethnic whites" in NY? Do you still live there?

Pretty, confident, small-eyed AA female,
Actually, most of the Asians who get eye surgery do it to look like the other Asians who have double eyelids. Half the Asian population are born with double eye-lids and half without. This is not to say that either one is better than the other. Like someone here mentioned, the Chinese media giants prefer relatively bigger eyes -- so that's the current fashion. Of course, there are many beautiful Asians with small or single-lid eyes. Actually, I've even seen some big eyes that were pretty scarey.
Yes, some people preach the idea that Asians get eye surgery to look white. But that's not really true. Many of those who go around telling the world that it is to look white do it for propaganda (to prove a point or sell ideology) rather than truth. Of course, there is truth to it, but many Asians who get eye surgery are doing it to look like other Asians, not white people.
It's also true that Asian men get eye surgery. This phenomenon applies to both women and men. Nevertheless, the number of Asians who get this surgery is small. This whole ordeal is exaggerated to sell the idea that we are really oppressed by white society, blah blah blah blah...
A good friend of mine did a whole study on this. He interviewed doctors, patients, you name it. And what he found was very different than what some professors teach in Asian American Studies....
Asian men and women get eye surgery but not for the reason you think

AC and Dominatrix:
Those High Heeled shoes (The kind with the heel in the middle¡£¡£¡£ AKA »¨Åèµ×)is originally a Manchurian tradition. However... it did not become popular in the Manchurian courts until later on in the Qing Dynasty. They are pretty cool. I have a pair¡£¡£ºÇºÇ¡£¡£ I actually have the whole entire Æì×° which includes the Dress and the Headress (Âú¹Ú)...
They are actually really really comfortable and easy to walk in. We wear sandles here in America that kind of look like the Shoes that Japanese Geishas used to wear. I wonder if those middle high heeled shoes will become fashionable here.
Hmmmmm....maybe I will wear them to Prom this weekend...
hehe...
